Aoyama’s Let’s Talk Day 2026 Translation [Unofficial Sources]
Today was Aoyama’s yearly Let’s Talk Day, a day when a lucky few audience members chosen by lottery have the chance to ask him questions. While the Q&A hasn’t yet been officially released, I’ve translated tweets about the questions asked. As with last year, I can’t guarantee that they’re 100% trustworthy until the official report is released. Last year, the official report was released around a month later.
In cases where different users reported slightly different answers for the same question, I consolidated them to the best of my ability. 4 questions were noted as off-the-record by tweeters and presumably not posted online. I'll be updating this as more reports come in, but it should have most questions by now. Sources at the end.
Without further ado:
Q. I live in Yokohama right now. This year's movie is set in Yokohama. How do you decide where a movie is going to take place?
A. I decide it based on the character for the year. Since this year is Chihaya, we went with Kanagawa, etc.
Q. Drawing is my hobby. Do you have any tips on how to get good at art?
A. Start with copying the art of a mangaka you like, then slowly turn it into your own style.
Q. Do you have fun drawing?
A. Tons of fun. I've been drawing all this time because it's so fun.
Q. Which culprit do you like the most?
A. I suppose Narumi-sensei. [T/N: From the Moonlight Sonata case.]
Q. Which characters did you struggle the most with creating?
A. Kaito Kid. It was a huge struggle. His background was a pain. Also, Chihaya I suppose.
Q. How were you able to continue Conan for thirty years?
A. Fans keep giving me great feedback, which helps motivate me.
Q. Why is Ran's hair pointy?
A. Her hair wasn't pointy at first. But I wanted to give her something unique, so she'd be recognizable no matter who drew her.
Q. What type of pen do you use when drawing?
A. I use A-Pigma 0.1, 0.05, and 0.08 pens. I used to use g-pens, but they got painful to use.
Q. In Black Iron Submarine, we were able to briefly see Rye and Bourbon's level of trust. Did Bourbon ever give orders to Rye in the past during missions?
A. I wonder? I hadn't really thought about it.
Q. Will Kid and the Kanagawa police interact in the future?
A. That sounds fun. I'll think about it. Kid rides bikes too, after all.
Q. Do you know when Kazuha and Heiji made their good luck charm?
A. I don't know. At some point (haha). I'll think about it if there's a reason to bring it up. The next chapter will be Heiji and Kazuha so please look forward to it.
Q. Conan once said he eats the engawa sushi first. Is that what you do as well?
A. I eat sushi in this order:
Sea urchin (uni)
Fish that seems like it'll go bad quick.
Salmon roe (ikura)
Finally, toro (tuna) since I can eat a lot and fill my belly with it.
Also, squid.
I used to dislike uni, so I started with the fish I didn't like.
Q. In the movie, it was wonderful how Koumei's hair flowed in the wind. Will this ever happen in the manga?
A. If I have the opportunity to, I will (haha)
Q. Did you like mystery manga even as a child?
A. Yes, or well rather Holmes. There wasn't a lot of mystery manga in the past. Kindaichi was the first. Conan was the second.
Q. Yokomizo Juugo will play a starring role in the next movie, but will Yokomizo Sango ever have a similar role?
A. Ah, I'll think about it. (haha)
Q. I want to know Kazuha and Heiji's birthdays.
A. I haven't decided. I might include it in a story based on it. She was based on a wife of one of my assistants named Kazuha, so maybe I'll choose it based on her birthday.
Q. In the latest movie, we learnt that Kid and Conan (Shinichi) are blood-related. When did you decide this?
A. I decided it quite a while back. A really long time ago. I told my assistants about it, but I hadn't had an opportunity to talk about it, so I thought it was a good time to reveal it.
Q. In the series Flowers and Dreams, a half-Indian, half-Japanese character has the same skin and hair colour as Furuya. Is Furuya also half-Indian?
A. He's half-Japanese. I don't know if he's half-Indian. That's a secret.
Q. Why did you decide on Aoko's birthday when you barely reveal any birthdays?
A. I just felt like it. Since Kaito has a confirmed birthday as well. Ah, Shinichi has a confirmed birthday too. (haha) I just figured that it'd be nice.
Q. Do you have anything you've been planning for Magic Kaito?
A. A dance party, of course. Do you wanna see it? If the editing department lets me. (haha) I don't know when I'll be able to draw it though.
Q. Who's the strongest and who's the weakest to alcohol?
A.
Aoyama: Who do you think they are?
Questioner: Akai-san is strong, Occhan drinks a lot but he seems pretty weak to alcohol.
Aoyama: Then I'll go with that!
Q. When did you start drawing?
A. When I was a preschooler. I liked Akatsuka Fujio-sensei's Nyarome, so I drew him a lot. You may get good at drawing if you just keep at it. [T/N: Akatsuka was the mangaka for series like Osomatsu-kun.]
Q. Is Vermouth's catchphrase "A secret makes a woman woman..." something she thought of herself? Or is it something she took from someone else?
A. Ah, that's something Vermouth thought up herself. Jodie-sensei memorized and used it. Please consider it her personal motto. (haha)
Q. Which case with Ai left the greatest impression on you?
A. The one where Gin shoots her.
Q. On your Animal Crossing island, Aoko was holding Kaito merch, but did Kaito actually ever make merch for Aoko?
A. That was just for Animal Crossing. It's a joke.
Q. Vermouth wears Fusae brand jewellery in Black Iron Submarine, but does she have any connection to Fusae herself?
A. She does not. She just happened to use it because it's a nice design.
Q. Will there ever be a case in Okinawa?
A. I'll think about it if I ever have the opportunity to. I often watch the Ken Min Show. Their language is fun.
Q. There was a movie that featured the Maritime Self-Defense Force, but do you have any plans for story that features the Air Self-Defense Force?
A. I'd like to if ever I have the opportunity.
Q. Will the series 2nd Year Class A Koumei-kun! ever become a manga?
A. I don't know, but if I could I'd like to do it.
Q. During Mystery Train, Amuro tells Shiho (who's actually Kid): "Bourbon... that is my codename..." Similarly, Haibara tells Conan "Sherry... that is my codename...." What's the reason that they use the same phrase?
A. A coincidence, I just realized that they were the same right now.
Q. How long did Akai, Amuro, and Sonoko believe in Santa?
A. Akai never believed in Santa from the very start. Definitely not. Sonoko bought into it a lot. Her dad probably dressed up as Santa too. I wonder about Amuro... I don't know.
Q. Will Conan, Matsuda, and Chihaya work together in the future?
A. Have you seen the most recent Sunday issue? It was good, right? I'll do my best.
Q. What would you do if you were the landlord in the case with Rum, Camel, and Ms. Wakasa that had multiple murders in the same apartment building?
A. I would use that as a selling point when looking for new tenants, haha.
Q. Do you plan to draw Hagiwara and Jinpei's childhood? I've been waiting since your answer to a question during the Let's Talk Day 2019 event....
A. Now, now, be patient. We just had a flashback after all.
Q. When did Furuya start living on his own?
A. We haven't seen hide nor hair of his parents, after all. Probably right after graduating high school- or wait, maybe during high school. He had family issues to consider. He probably invited Hiro to come hang.
Q. How do you draw your icon?
A. Glasses -> Outline -> Eyebrows -> The stuff on its head -> Mouth -> Done.
Q. Why was Chihaya so stubborn about not returning Matsuda's feelings?
A. Maybe it annoyed her how he acted like it was just a given that she'd become his girlfriend?
Q. What kind of alcohol does the Nagano Trio like?
A. Probably alcohol from Nagano? But Koumei probably also likes wine.
Q. I want to know Scotch's alias.
A. I guess I never mentioned it. I'll think of a good one.
Q. The car that Koumei uses in the movie isn't the same as in the manga. Is it his, or was it rented or something?
A. That was because he needed to be in a convertible so Ran could give instructions from Koumei to Conan by standing up in the car. Huh, it's different from the manga? Someone from TOM'S INC thought it up for us.
Q. I want to know WPS' birthdays.
A. Hmm. Maybe if the opportunity ever arises. I'll think about it.
Q. I want to know about Rye, Bourbon, and Scotch's time in the Organization together. When Akai was working as Rye, he ran into Masumi, but what kind of mission was he doing?
A. I can't say. I'll say if that kind of scene eventually shows up in the future.
Q. Were there any plots that were tough to create, or you struggled to think up?
A. The school trip arc. It was a struggle with reading the names both ways. I wrote it at a high level then thought it through with my editors.
Q. Are there any other series you'd like to write?
A. Tons, like YAIBA's continuation. But even when I think about writing anything else, I end up satisfied with writing Conan.
Q. Are there any upcoming plans for stories set in certain prefectures?
A.
Aoyama: Where were you thinking of?
Questioner: I came from Toyama, so Toyama!
Aoyama: Is there anything famous there? Don't hold your breath, but please wait patiently (haha).
Q. The boss' phone number was the tune Nanatsu no Ko when keyed in on a cellphone, and appeared in Black Iron Submarine. But will we have the opportunity to see it again in the manga?
A. Everyone uses smartphones now, so it isn't really used much anymore, huh? If there's an opportunity.
Q. In the Valentine's story in Volume 33, what was Shinichi (Conan) thinking as he talked?
A. I've forgotten that case. I'll re-read it and save it in my heart. (haha)
Q. When will Tottori be blown up in a movie?
A. It would be tough to blow up. I don't know what voice actors could do Tottori Dialect too. It would be tough, but I'd love to if we could. (haha)
Q. Matsuda was really aggressively pursuing Chihaya, but how did Hagiwara feel watching this as his best friend?
A. Like on my Animal Crossing island, he'd say things like "Tonight's Christmas Eve, good luck!" He'd be cheering him on.
Q. How did WPS spend their days off?
A. They probably went to see movies and such?
Q. I'm from Chizu Town in Tottori. Will a case ever be set there?
A. If it were Yazu Town I could work in the orochi... I'll think about it.
Q. What kind of food does Azusa like?
A. What do you think she likes? I guess strawberries.
Q. Has Inspector Yamato realized his feelings for Yui?
A. Hasn't he? But I think he definitely hasn't realized that Yui likes him back. Since he's stupid.
Q. There was a case where WPS played baseball with a young Shinichi, but will there be a baseball case in the future?
A. If I can think of a plot.
Q. Which movie do you like most?
A. I have the most emotional attachment to Movie 1 I suppose. Since I thought that it would be the end [of the anime]. But lately, I like Black Iron Submarine.
Q. Do you accept all offers to appear on TV?
A. I refuse some. I won't say which ones since that would be a bit eh. I have my reasons, I'm busy after all.
Q. Do you have a goal for how long you want to continue Conan?
A. No, not in particular... that's tough to admit. (haha)
Q. Between Kaito and Aoko vs. Kansuke and Yui, who do you think will get together first?
A. That's hard to say... (haha) I don't know.
Q. Do you play to write a case featuring Heiji and Kazuha's childhood?
A. I'd like to if I get the opportunity. Since they're childhood friends, there's tons I can write for them.
Q. I want to know Furuya's morning routine.
A. Wouldn't it be the same as Zero's Tea Time? There, I guess it would be taking care of Haro. In Conan, his private life is a mystery, after all. I'll leave it to your imagination.
Q. Will there ever be a focus on Heiji and Kazuha's parents?
A. I'd like to if I get the opportunity. I'll think about it. They did show up during the Naniwa Harukas case.
Q. In Volume 107, the Nagano trio show up as children, but what did Yui call Koumei when they were little?
A. Probably "Kou-kun", right? I think it would've been Kou-kun and Kan-chan.
Q. Who thought up the idea of drawing preschool teacher Ran during the Sunday Cultural Festival?
A. Funamoto Arusa in the editing department suggested a preschool teacher, and I thought it was a good idea, so I drew it.
Q. Will the Morofushi brothers ever talk in reality in the manga?
A. In old memories or flashbacks you mean? Hm. If I have the opportunity to. I'll think about it.
I wrote these to use myself, but if you'd like to use them for your OTPs, self ships, OCs, etc as an ask game, or just as a prompt list, please feel free to enjoy <3
This could have been Shinichi if he hadn’t run off to chase after yet another case ಠ_ಠ j/k
This redraw was honestly quite the challenge, as it was my first time doing a full-body, full-scene drawing, all without a pre-existing episode! Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun experimenting with different colors and compositions and slowly turning a 2020s manga panel into a lower-cost 90s anime scene. :D
Little Disclaimer:
Not all background elements are my original creation but were taken from episode 1 and movie 4, color graded, and edited to fit the scene according to my vision.
came out of my retirement of not drawing to draw a rough (modern) conan art style comparison thing for this meme on twitter
the context is Episode 890, where Atsushi Aono, an animator from early Conan who directed a fair number of episodes, came back after many years just to direct an episode in 2018, his style is distinct in that he draws very round Conans, it's easy to see his style in his episodes
the difference is night and day especially since it was a two-part ep and Aono directed the part 2
Welcome to: Why Shinichi and Ran's relationship compels me, an essay:
In the first chapter/episode, we're given a glimpse into what we can assume their relationship has been up until now: full of bickering and tsundere-esk crushing. (I have to admit, this is not my favorite dynamic by far) However, with the Conan Event™, their relationship is forever changed, specifically in this moment, which is one of my favorites in the series:
here you can clearly see Shinichi playing into their old dynamic, he's teasing Ran, not expecting a serious answer. Probably something along the lines of "of course not! why would I like that detective geek?" But instead:
𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 is the moment where everything changes. And not just because Shinichi now has confirmation his feelings are requited. This here is the moment his situation becomes the most real it ever has been. He 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 Shinichi anymore, he's interacting with Ran like they haven't met before. The thing he's probably wanted to hear the most from the girl he likes, was given to him just like that. 𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵. And he immediately regrets it, knowing he has to tell Ran the truth:
You can just see how guilty he feels over this. Of course, Mouri interrupts them before he can actually confess.
But this is where their dynamic changes forever. Shinichi can never go back to their juvenile will-they-won't-they. Instead it gives him a concrete goal: return to his body, that way he can confess his feelings to Ran.
As for Ran, Shinichi's disappearance changes things for her. She took their relationship for granted, just assuming they'd always have each other, that they had all the time in the world (they both did). But now Shinichi's gone. The only thing she cares about is having him back.
This is where their goals differ from each other, all because of this piece of context Shinichi has but Ran doesn't. And this is what really strains the scenes where Shinichi briefly shows up, adding all the tension (which I 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦).
Starting with Ran, she's worried sick. Her best friend disappeared without a trace, she can't get into contact with him, it's 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨. The only thing she can really do is hope he isn't in danger, and burn her fear away with anger. All she cares about is getting Shinichi back, and returning to their previous dynamic. As long as he's safe and by her side again, she's not focused on anything like confessing feelings or deepening their relationship (at least at this point). She just wants him back. Which is why her focus is on "catching" him, and holding onto him:
(of course a lot of this has to do with Kazuha's influence, but that's an entire topic for another day). The few times Shinichi is around, all Ran wants is for him to stay.
Meanwhile, Shinichi has a completely different goal.
He wants to return back to his life, for things to be "normal" again, but his relationship with Ran is the exception. He 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 to get his feelings across, not just to make up for accidentally hearing her confession, but also as a promise to her. Every time he takes an antidote, he knows his time is limited, so he's pushing their relationship further and further, to make up for lost time. Asking her to "wait for me."
In the Diplomat Murder case, he's too out of it to really focus on anything, and his time is so short. In the Desperate Revival case, it's important to remember he thinks he's back permanently. The very first thing he does (after the play and murder of course) is invite Ran out to dinner so he can confess to her. He chickens out a few times, but he still has every intention to confess. Even ignoring a murder case! After this, of course, is when he knows his time is limited.
The next two times they interact, the Murderer Kudou Shinichi case and Holmes Revelation, Shinichi is unprepared. The first one he accidentally takes an antidote and is backed into a corner in terms of the time limit. The second time he took an emergency dose because he messed up, leading Ran to trap him in a phone booth. At first he tells her to wait, eluding to a confession, and of course we all know about his confession in London. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 is the first time their goals realign.
Ran reached a breaking point. Shinichi must have been making fun of her, not caring about her feelings. She's the only one who wants him back, for their friendship to go back the way it was before.
Shinichi's confession not only showed Ran that 𝘩𝘦𝘳 feelings were requited (something she hadn't even considered at this point!) but it also gave her a new understanding of the situation. She's known Shinichi practically their whole lives, she can read him, can tell when he's being genuine. It's never directly stated, but it's clear to me that this makes Ran understand that Shinichi doesn't 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 to be away from her. It's very clear Shinichi isn't the type to confess his feelings (and he probably never would have if Ran didn't confess first!) at the very least he wouldn't without solid evidence that she feels the same. And he practically tells her that he 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯'𝘵 have that evidence!! He can't read her feelings unless she directly states them to him. Which, as far as she's aware, she hasn't. Shinichi is going out on a 𝘩𝘶𝘨𝘦 limb to confess to her. Which helps to clue her in on how serious he is about solving whatever this case is and returning to her. That was exactly what she needed to hear to clear any doubt in her mind and be more comfortable with his absence. Of course, she still wants him to return, but she's no longer hurt and angry about his disappearance, she now has certainty of where they stand. That confession scene only works 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 of how much these two know each other. Play it from an outsiders perspective, and it doesn't work. It 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 works because it's 𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘢𝘯.
And then we reach the Scarlet School Trip, where things are finally comfortable between them. The tension of their two separate goals is no longer a factor, and they can just be comfortable and have fun!
Shinichi is fully prepared this time, he's intentionally showing up, for the first time since Desperate Revival. With the bonus that he 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘴 his time is limited. Once again it's not directly stated in the manga, but judging by the attitude of those around them and Ran especially, it's understood Shinichi is only here for the class trip. There are no uncertainties, therefore there's no hurt, or jealousy, or freaking out. (The only problem would be Shinichi leaving just before kissing Ran, but she is never shown to have any negative reaction to this). It's official that they're dating, and that is exactly what Ran needed.
(I've seen some people complain that at Ran's uncertainty of if they're dating or not, Shinichi immediately insults her by calling her an "idiot," but that just goes back to their friendly bickering like before, it has the same level of heat as her calling him a "geek" or "nerd" (which is none at all) and is used as a reminder of their bond, he's not belittling her! And she doesn't take it that way either.)
By far the catalyst to all of this is Ran's confession at the beginning. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 is the moment things go from comedy to tragedy in their relationship, which makes it SO much more compelling to follow. There would be a lot of meaning lost if Shinichi was going back to Ran just for them to continue dodging around each other. It's that one moment that makes me a Shinran fan.
In Gosho Aoyama 30th Anniversary Book, it is revealed that Aoyama-sensei’s favorite chapter is Shinichi BOY Part 1. It’s so overwhelmingly significant that the book includes the draft of this chapter with Aoyama-sensei’s added comments to each page, so the readers can enjoy it like a guided tour.
My favorite is the comment for the scene when Ran gave Shinichi the sakura badge she made and said, “I’m not a crybaby! Don’t call me a crybaby again!”
Aoyama-sensei added that in this particular moment, Shinichi was thinking, “But why are you angry? You're this cute.”
He also added that it was funny how Shinichi was suddenly rude to the teacher the moment he became attracted to Ran.
I really like Shinichi’s sudden change in demeanor though. He was real quick in seeing the teacher as a threat and giving him an attitude. It’s like the moment he fell for Ran he knew right away that he’s going to be the one to guard her. Ran’s safety has always been his top priority.
It’s also obvious that just moments before, Shinichi was still arguing with Ran on the matter of whether she cried or not, but after his heart skipped a beat, he could only gaze with awe. He was clearly struck by Ran’s cuteness.
Like Aoyama-sensei said here, “Our Shinichi is actually deeply struck by feelings of affection for Ran, so please disregard his cheeky attitude. (laughs)”
Here're a few more notable comments by Aoyama-sensei on the chapter.
Aoyama: This is the part I wanted to draw the most! The best page in 30 years is here. “Don't panic, act high and mighty like Holmes.” That's the core and fundamentals of Shinichi's character. But the line was cut in the anime! I sent a message to the director, “Please don't cut it. That part is very important!”
(But the director still cut the line...)
Aoyama: Ah, this is also a scene I really wanted to draw. The exchange of “You cried!” and “I didn't cry!!” It wasn’t drawn in a flow at all. I just added this scene I wanted to draw (laughs). The two white boxes in the middle were copies of the same scene from Ran GIRL, so I didn't draw them again.
Aoyama: Ran is happy to hear “Thank you,” smiling and saying, “Here, it’s done!!” But we can’t see her expression. We don’t get to see it in Ran GIRL either. We’ll only see it at the end of Shinichi BOY Part 2. It's that smile that made Shinichi fall for her.
