Vampires were one of Cole’s least favourites. Whether they can control it or not, they hurt people and animals, and that was enough to make the bad page in his book. He hadn’t even met one yet, but the stories that he’d heard were truly terrifying. Though filled with compassion, even Cole wouldn’t know if he’d be able to stop one on his own. He likes to think he could, of course. He would just prefer if he didn’t have to.

And of course, it was his lucky day. They didn’t have to show any outward signs that they were a vampire - Cole could just tell; he still reeked of blood, and it looked like he was still thirsty for more. It was fortunately an empty street, save for one child further down the road. Mostly out of instinct, Cole immediately took human form and jumped in front of the man. “I know you’re hungry, but there are other ways! Better ways! Without hurting anyone!”

Magic awed Cole. There was so much that witches and wizards were capable of, and he was fascinated by it. Of course, while he was satisfied with his own powers, all he wanted to do was observe some of the many things that can be done when one had magic. He did that by watching various witches and wizards while in his fox form, but usually they’d notice and tell him to get lost. He didn’t mind continuing on and finding someone else to observe, but lately, it hasn’t felt enough for him. He wasn’t learning much from jumping around, so he’d have to find someone that would let him observe. As he searched, he came across one young looking female who wore her hair in a bow. Although he only caught a glimpse of her magic, the small fox approached her, hoping that she would let him.

He was... different, to say the least. Unlike most of his kind, Cole didn’t use his powers to play tricks on others. He simply found that childish.

Instead, he used them to slip by unnoticed. No one ever saw him unless they needed to. The world was full of pain and suffering, and all the young boy wanted to do was help ease that pain. He spent most of his time in fox form, watching as people constantly passed by him. Only when they needed him did he use his human form. 

Cole traveled to all sorts of places and met all sorts of people, but he was never remembered by anyone. It was another of his powers that he put to use often. Once they were happy, healed, they no longer needed him, so he would make them forget him. Or if he messed up while he was trying to untangle the knot and tore it instead, he could simply start over. It proved very useful.

“Tin jangle as the blood spills. Pierre's wrapped body on the wagon to the church. Five more minutes. My fault.” The small kistune mumbled to himself as he approached a young woman, his two tails wagging behind him. As he approached the woman, he transformed into his human form, his voice soft but louder so she could hear. “You can’t save all of them.” The woman looked at him in confusion, but he continued. “Like Pierre getting sick after you snuck out to aunt Eloise’s pond. You want it to be your fault, so there’s a reason, and it’s not so frightening. But there’s no reason. Pierre just got sick. The boy was never going to live. It wasn’t your fault.” And with his final words, the woman felt relief.

She soon turned away from Cole, as if he weren’t standing there in the first place. A proud grin formed on his lips as he took his fox form once again. “I helped.”

night shift

Cole doesn’t like working night shifts. Night time was cold and dark, and full of fear. In fact, he couldn’t sleep without a little bit of light on, as childish as it is. But when a co-worker asks him to take their night shift, it’s not like Cole can refuse. It comforted him knowing that he wasn’t alone for the shift, however, even though him and his coworker may not be the best of friends. 

Still, just a glance at the darkness outside was enough to make him uncomfortable. He tried to focus on restocking the merchandise, but his eyes still wander. The longer they stared, the more he remembered, and he didn’t want to remember. “Dark, cold, alone. ‘No, this isn’t right, this isn’t real.’ A nightmare that never went away.” The boy mumbled as he backed away from the windows. In the process, he knocked over a shelf, the merchandise scattering among the floor. “I’m sorry!!” Cole hurried to his knees, scrambling to clean up the mess he’s made.

Cole loved visiting the animal shelter. For most, small animals gave them comfort and joy, and that alone made him happy. In particular, he liked spending times around the guinea pigs, and could often be found around the area where they are kept. But mostly, he liked seeing the joy on people’s faces as they saw the cute little animals nuzzling their hands. It was a nice change from looking at pain on people’s faces.

Despite being there so often, Cole didn’t see the boy who volunteered there often. Today was the first time he’s actually seen him, near the puppies (Cole’s second favourite place, since puppies give people the most happiness, it seemed). Perhaps to clean the cages in which they were kept? He stepped out of the boy’s way to let him do whatever he came there to do, not wanting to be in the way. “They help each other. When they’re adopted, both of them are less lonely.”

hidden hurt

He’s seen him before as Cole sat in his usual spot atop a stone railing. Each time, the hurt in his eyes becomes more obvious. He wanted to help, but he wasn’t sure how to approach him. Like many others, this man was one who buried his pain; those people were harder to help. They build walls that are hard to break, and generally they don’t admit that they need help. 

But today seemed to be lucky, as this man approached the stone railing, to answer a call, it seemed. Cole hung his head low as the man approached, his entire face hidden by his giant hat. His feet swung, and he waited until he was finished. “You lock it away, like so many others. You think it will help, but it never does. It only grows bigger and it eats you away.”

His head was hung still hung low, and his feet were still swinging. He never made eye contact at first, because a lot of the time, people didn’t want his help. They’d think he was a freak, weird, and want nothing to do with him. In reality, he just had a very good eye for people in pain. He just wanted to help.
