Writing Prompt #329: Dialogue

“If something happens to us I want you to know something.” “Nothing’s going to happen to us.” “Just listen, just in case something does. No matter what happens in the future, please remember that I am always proud of you.”

The situation was far more grim than he’d accounted for, their information had been off. Or the ambushed leaked. Whatever the case may be Whiskey knew they were over matched in this instance when the small caravan of equipment they were raiding was a cover for the smuggling of a magitek armor. Whiskey’s golden eyes flashed first to one side and then the other as already the machine was laying into the soldiers he’d brought with him even as he broke position to begin the decent downwards.

A grimace curls his short muzzle when his adoptive son dashes from the tree line to start trotting next to him as they make their way down to the front lines. Whiskey didn’t scold the young Au Ra or even offer a bit of consolation to the wiry boy dragging a sword far too large for him - the pesky kid just refused to use something safe like a spear or a bow. Pausing in his decent Whiskey unlimbers his axe from it’s hook on his back as he reaches over with his free hand to ruffle the boy’s dark red hair, “Boyo, if somethin’ happens here, you run. But I gotta tell ya’ somethin’ first…”

The child’s response was one based out of overconfidence that was perhaps placed in the pillar of a man that his father represented to him or more likely the fact that they had often survived worse encounters, albeit on more even footing, “Awe come on now ol'man, we’ll be just fine!” He chirruped as did his best to heft the large cleaver he was dragging behind him onto a shoulder to mimic the giant bearcatte standing at his side.

“Bah, shut yer trap boy an’ just listen to me fer once. No matter what happens, just know I’m proud o’ ya for gettin’ yer arse outta the plains.” He says in that deep growl of his. Hefting the hunk of steel that he calls an axe in both hands as he tosses his head back to let free a roar. Drawing the attention of the Armor’s pilot even as Whiskey charged through the brush line as a spew of flames issues forth from one of the machine’s arms… (I was puttering around and wanted to write a blurb. Hope you don’t mind using Young!Vol but he’s the only one I can think of for this. @thefoulvol)
