I find that sad that people are now convinced that "tragic backstory" is an easy, cheap and overused to somehow excuse villains when it isn't.
"Tragic backstories" are here show you that evil does not come from nothing and that characters who are "evil" were not born that way. It's a question of nuture not nature and so, would have they end up like this if it wasn't for the environnement they were raised in? Who knows.
A tragic backstory is not here to excuse their actions after that but to explain where they come from. Some villains have a tragic backstory and does not have a redemption, by the way. Since when explaining is excusing?
A lot of heroes have tragic backstories but nobody bat an eye so why are some of you so adamant on the idea that tragic backstory are bad for the villains? Is it because somehow suffering should make you better and not worse? That coming out from suffering not broken makes you stronger thus better? It is not the case. Suffering is not good and should not be considered as such because it hurts.
I find that funny because usually, when it happens, heroes may have a tragic backstory but they have the support to overcome it. It is never natural - and if it is the case, you change the topic from nuture to nature. Whereas, on the opposite, the villain gets no help whatsoever. One is lucky and the other just isn't.
And when you come to this, you have to wonder: is the hero that good (because they suffered or not) or was he just lucky? Is the villain that bad or was he just unlucky?
Having a tragic backstory is not just here to make you pity the villain and forgive his bad deeds, it is here to make you question if the world created is clear cut good and bad and if you should nuance your view of it. I don't know why so many people appear to be uncomfortable with this.
(And even if sometimes Villains are proposed help to get better and just refused it, notice how many time this help comes with the negation of their suffering. Their "tragic backstory" is part of who they are, it can't be erased because their past is the reason of their present. Saying "Okay, now make the good choice and become good" and not knowledging the reason of their behaviour will not only bring up a refusal but also (even if they accept) will not solve the problem. It is quite logical.)
What reptile would you recommend for a first time owner? When I move out im hoping to get a scaled friend of my own (and ofc do the proper research first!!! Dont want to harm any babies) ideally something that is safe to handle (without hurting them, I don't mind a few bites and such) and I love All Reptiles so anything goes
My view on reptiles is--get the one that fits your lifestyle. Like I love my beardies, but they would have been a mess trying to move when I was in apartments for like three years at a time. Their upkeep can also get really pricey. And if you get them the enclosures they deserve, they take up a lot of room.
Crested geckos and leopard geckos are both neat lizards with a lot of morph variety! Cresties only need the occasional bug and do well on a Repashy diet. Leopard gecks only eat bugs, so it depends on your feelings about those.
Snakes I know less about. I'm told good things about rosy boas. The males are smaller and can do well in a smaller tank, and I love the striped Beetlejuice looking ones.
Just keep living arrangements and budget in mind. And never buy a baby bearded dragon unless you have a huge developed bug colony because those little jerks WILL bankrupt you.
