steve rogers:
“I know.” He made the same mistake of underestimation with Tony before they first met. Steve examined Gabriela’s awareness with wandering eyes when it came to emotions silently, watching her check before revealing a vulnerable side in a way that often reminded him of Tony. A quality that was as enduring as it was painful. “If what’s real? Us? Me?” The self-doubt caught Steve by surprise that it took everything in him not to reach out and pull her in for a hug. He didn’t want to give physical contact where it might not be welcome. “Gabi,” That didn’t stop him from taking a few steps closer before reaching into the pocket of his khakis and feeling the cool metal chain press against his fingers as he pulled out his old war dog tags. It was meant to be a gift for the wedding reception, but he couldn’t see a better time than now. “Look at me. If you ever feel like you’re losing yourself or you just…need a a solid ground for this reality. Tony and I, Bruce, Nat, your teammates,” He held it out towards Gabi, the tags laying flat on his palm, “Here’s your reminder.”
Gabi shook her head as she cried. “You don’t know. She made me think I was dying Steve and maybe I did die and this is the hell she’s putting me through. She can do that, she never did it before but she’s always known she could and now she’s against us and for him. He’s chaotic and he could kill hundred with a single thought if he wanted to. They held back before but I don’t think they will again.” In her panic Gabi barely realised what Steve was doing until he spoke. She looked at him like he asked, looked into his green flecked blue eyes and allowed herself to be captured by the honesty she saw in them. Tentatively she took the dog tags from his hands and squeezed them beneath her palm. “I-- I’ll try.” The thing was; not even Steve could save her from Quentin and Wanda.
robert drake:
I don’t think you want someone punching me, Gabi– I don’t think anyone brought their winter coats to this.
There’s a strict no superhero shenanigans protocol tonight. You don’t want to face the disapproving frown from Steve. Trust me.
robert drake:
Then I guess you’re going to have to follow me around and make sure no one touches me.
Fine. But I won’t stop someone from punching you once you’ve annoyed the wrong person.
steve rogers:
Steve reached up and rubbed at his lower lip with his index finger thoughtfully, taking the time and patience to remain silent as a sign of attentive respect. He wasn’t about to ignore her pain even if she was intent on doing so herself. “I’ve seen this world on the cusp of ending before, Gabi, long before the battle of New York. I know they’re capable of cracking the planet in two, I’ve seen the footage.” He sighed with a slight shake of his head, “If our roles were reversed and it was you in Wanda’s place, Tony and I wouldn’t lay down and give in. That only comes from a father’s love.”
Gabi scoffed and shook her head and looked away from Steve. “Seeing the footage is different from being there.” Her eyes began to water and she chewed on her bottom lip, anxiously she looked and made sure no one was around them as a tear rolled down her cheek. “Wanda and Quentin were my friends. When we were training we learned about each other’s abilities we knew everything about each other... but them. They were always growing and getting better and it was amazing because we thought they’d always be with us.” Gabi looked at Steve and her lip wobbled, “I don’t even know if this is real.”
bucky barnes:
Do you need me to stand by you and glare anyone away? I find that it’s particularly effective in social events.
As affective as that would be, even I wouldn’t put you through that kind of torture.
steve rogers:
“I’m not just talking about the engagement.” Steve firmly pressed his lips together in a way that made him feel like a stern grandfather. Or a father, in Gabi’s case. “You barely said two words about the mission when we got back.”
Gabi shook her head, “What is there to say?” The mission had been a disaster, she and Robert had nearly died. Wanda had made her... Gabi shuddered at the thought, she sometimes woke gasping for air, still able to feel the phantom touch of her throat being crushed. “We lost. While I’m happy to be here because god knows you and Tony need this. Our world could be ending soon; literally. Clint wants us to have faith in a girl who’d rather hurt us than let us help. You haven’t seen the Steve -- none of you know what they can do... what they’d be able to do.”
tony stark:
I think you could be if it was the right color.
Do you want me to beat your ass? I could do it you know, even if you had the suit.
steve rogers:
“One never hurts.” Steve plucked a champagne flute from a passing server’s tray and held it out to Gabi, “About that, I,” He didn’t know how to put the thought into words, “I wanted to know how you were doing with…all of it.”
Gabi raised an eyebrow and feigned confusion, because deep down she knew what tried to imply and she didn’t know what the answer was. “What do you mean? I’m great.” She took a sip from the flute.
bruce banner:
America’s darling. On top of that, you have every avenger as a family member.
Because that’s no intimidating...
pietro maximoff:
I don’t know whose flask this is, but it’s mine now.
Whatever was in that... my head’s spinning now.
robert drake:
If someone else bumps into me, I swear to God I’ll throw them over the balcony.
If you start trouble at my dads engagement party I’ll throw you off the balcony.
thor odinson:
Do not let your father or Banner hear that– I will not hear the end of their complaints now that I have taken their title of Smartest Avenger.
Maybe not Bruce, but I think Tony could deal with a health dose of humility.
tony stark:
You mean you don’t want to wear a frilly dress with pigtails in your hair?
Do I really look like a frilly dress kind of girl?
bucky barnes:
Just how many times were you asked that at this party alone?
Too many to count. It’s quite tacky.
bruce banner:
No, but you are going to be Captain America’s step-daughter. Nobody else can say that.
I... I actually hadn’t really thought about that.
steve rogers:
Well, no. He says a small get-together and I imagine close friends.
Can I get you something to drink?
One won’t hurt thanks. Can’t really toast lemonade to your engagement.
