One simple question, that's all it takes for him to roll his eyes and sigh. After that our meal is finished in silence. Most times when I piss him off by suggesting we spend time together, he makes an excuse to leave.
Tonight he helps me clean up.
He leans against the counter waiting for me to close the dishwasher, "I'm sorry, I just have a ton of work to catch up on." He says.
Buttons undone.
Work clothes pooled around my ankles.
I should have known.
He's never sweet without intention. Every ounce of his affection comes with a cost.

(The mafia abided by a strict set of rules: Do your job right, don't ask questions you don't want answer to, and keep your mouth shut.)
(Such rules are of utmost importance. Breaking any one of these rules would result in a fate much worse than death-)
(I would know. Being kidnapped and physically tortured for a week straight had me wishing death on myself. Unfortunately, our 'dear' Watcher had other plans for me-)
(Although I was technically not a part of their organization, the same rules applied to me. I learnt more about the Conti family from these jobs alone, than I ever had by speaking with them.)
(Antonio; the Don of the Conti family. One of four mob bosses and head honcho behind most crime rings in Tartosa… the same ones Matteo tried to stop. However, what set him apart from the rest was his connection to your father.)
(I wasn't entirely sure what the connection was between them then… all I could say was thatit seemed personal. Matteo died right before he unveiled the truth. I don't think he knew it was Antonio behind it all-)
(Of course Antonio only made the commands and never the one to directly commit a crime-)
[sounds of struggling]
Antonio: …Are you ready to talk Mr. Tolman? Lorenzo's being rather merciful-
[wheezing]
Antonio: Mr. Tolman-
Mr. Tolman: N-n-no!
Antonio: [nods his head in approval] Lorenzo.
Mr. Tolman: … w-wait! [asphyxiates]
(Then silence. Lorenzo killed him with such ease. The poor bastard. At times, I wanted to interfere, but I couldn't-)
(I was afraid to. Gods, I hate admitting that… it's embarrassing honestly. What kind of man am I, if all I do is cower from them? I know what they're capable of. All I felt was fear, especially around Lorenzo. Pathetic considering mate's like two years younger than me and a foot shorter-)
(And every time he'd commit a heinous act, it was always the same expression on his face or lack thereof… not a single ounce of remorse. I wondered how someone could live life as he did… I didn't even partake and I still felt guilty.)
Antonio: Get rid of him.
[shovel sounds]
(By month two, every job I was assigned to became progressively more violent than the last-)
(Lorenzo was his father's watch dog. Often accompanying me whenever a job was complete. Antonio wanted to ensure I wasn't disobeying orders.)
(We loathed each other. Rarely exchanged words, and if we did it was usually one of us yelling obscenities at the other. Mate was quite literally insufferable)
(It was unsettling. Having every move of mine being watched. I never trusted him… he's the type of person to backstab someone if they weren't careful… I always had my guard up around him-)
(But I saw through him rather quickly. The man was a sadist. Took pleasure in hurting others, but truly, he did it for Antonio. He loved the approval he received from his father-)
(I couldn't relate. I'd do the complete opposite for my old man. But seeing as Lorenzo was the heir to the Conti "throne" and next in line to become Don... it made sense why he wanted to be in his fathers good graces.)
(I was jealous of him. Seeing as he had everything anyone could want in life. A family, fortune, and success… he didn't have to lift a finger and he'd still get what he wanted with ease. He stand to gain everything-)
(...Whilst I stand to gain nothing.)
(Eventually the fine line between physical assault and murder faded. Every crime I committed was all starting to look the same-)
(Antonio had a long list of enemies, some didn't know they were on it until I showed up at their doors.)
(And when I did, it never ended well. Compliance determined fate. It meant beating someone into submission until they were unconscious.)
(I learnt to swallow my pride. Pushed my sense of morality to the back of my mind whilst continuously justifying my actions. It's for a good cause… right? I'm doing it to protect my own.)
( What happened behind closed doors, remained between the confines of those walls.)
(When business was finished; I said a hail Mary, rid my sins on my way out, and would carry on as normal.)
(And as long as Antonio was pleased, I had nothing to say in the matter.)
(I became accustomed to my new life rather quickly, I'm not proud of it, but it kept me afloat-)
(Antonio and Vlad wasted no time in putting me to work. So much had happened in those first few months alone, I wouldn't be able to tell you every single crime I committed.)
(And the ones that I do remember, well... let's just say those were the worst ones.)
Antonio:... A job well done. Now, onto the next-
(I was constantly on the move, often times traveling outside the country... When Antonio told me to jump, I asked how high. It's just the way business went.)
[chatter and laughter]
[abrupt awkward silence]
Apollo: Erm... Good afternoon, everyone-
Antonio: Apollo.
Antonio: Everyone, I'd like you to meet Apollo Klein, my newest associate.
Apollo: Nice to meet yuh.
Antonio: Make yourself at home, we're about to start another round of poker.
(And make no mistake, the mutual dislike of one another was very well understood. We tolerated each other, but just enough.)
(I started out with smaller jobs... loan sharking, extortion, intimidation...)
Enzo: You piece of fucking shit. I told you this would happen. Where is he!?
[gurgling]
[continues to gurgle]
Enzo: What was that again? I can't hear you!
Apollo: Fuck's sake, Lorenzo. Let me handle this.
Enzo: [scoffs] Go ahead then! Let's see you try then!
Apollo: Get the fuck up! Where's Alma?!
Captive: [scared] H-he's [pause] in M-M-Mexico-!
Apollo: Where in Mexico?!
Captive: I-I c-c-can't [breathe]
Apollo: If yuh don't tell me, I'll snap your neck in half
Captive: He's in- in C C-Ciudad Enamorada!
Captive:[groaning]
Apollo: [stands up] See? How hard was that?
Enzo: Oh come on, he only said something because you were about to kill him!
Apollo: Nuh, skill issue on your part, bruv. Next time, let the pros handle it.
Enzo: Ma vaffanculo!!! [Go fuck yourself!!]
Apollo: Yeh, yeh. Back at yuh.
(Not long after, I found myself committing armed robbery and larceny)
[fires gunshots, screaming ensues]
Apollo: Everyone get on the ground!!!
Apollo: Don't. Move.
Teller: Please don't shoot.
Apollo: Do as I say, no one gets hurt.
Apollo: All of it. In the bag.
Teller: A-All of it?
Apollo: Did I fockin' stutter? YES, ALL OF IT!
(Eventually I was promoted to smuggling contraband, gun running, drug dealing...whatever you want to call it-)
Carlo: Right this way-
Carlo: Sergio! Buonasera!
Carlo: That's our delivery guy, you'll be working with him when we get new shipments.
Apollo: What do we have here...
Carlo: Grazie. Antonio's waiting for you inside.
Carlo: Apollo, bring what you can down to the basement.
Apollo: ... Antonio just has these lying around...?
Carlo: No. Majority will go to our other associates. Mostly to cartel members. I have a contact in Italy who will take them overseas.
Carlo: But he does keep a stockpile. Which is also why I brought you down here-
For the past two years I’ve called Willow Creek home. It’s not where I thought I’d be at this point in my life.
You see, I had a meticulous plan in place; school, career, marriage and then the family I never had growing up.
I wanted a house with a white picket fence, a cat and a couple of children. I yearned for continuous laughter and endless love. Of course, my plan included a loving husband and at seventeen there wasn’t a single doubt in my mind that Simon would fill this role perfectly.
Naively I thought that hard work and perseverance would bring my dream life to fruition.
When I got into the most distinguished university in Nordhaven and Simon didn’t, I stuck with him and made our long-distance relationship work.It was a tough four years. Between my strenuous course load and traveling to back and forth to Widenburg to spend time with him, I missed out on so much.I didn’t get the chance to branch out and make new friends like I had wanted to. I missed an internship opportunity. By the end of my final semester, I was exhausted and ready to start the next chapter of my life.
Simon wasn’t moving to Norhaven, a decision that he made on his own. It was the final nail in our dead relationship. I was ready to move on and if that meant letting him go as part of the process, I was well and truly fine with it. Sure, my heart rate sped up almost unbearably when I thought of a future without him, but I’d been the only one making sacrifices to keep our relationship going. Less sleep, less time to study, barely any life outside of him and school. Effort in relationships is not always evenly split, but there had been promises made and repeatedly broken, the role of loving husband was looking less likely to be filled by Simon.
He could tell I was over it; us. That’s when new promises were made. All the ones I'd been desperate to hear. A ring, a house...kids.
Tucking away my carefully crafted plan, I turned down my dream job, borrowed money from Gran for a house that I could barely afford and settled into my new life.
It’s been two years, of me working in corpo hell because, Simon wants to live separately until we tie the knot.
Seven hundred and 30 days and there is still no ring in sight. Engagement plans seem to be long forgotten. The mere mention of ‘our future’ always starts a fight.
I'm happy, but just feel like there should be more to my life.
