Thursdays, amirite?
Someone fell from the top of the wall today at the climbing gym...about 40 feet. I was the first employee on the scene. I heard I her body hit the ground. I also heard a scream and ran over from my office. She was unconscious on the ground and not breathing right. Her breaths were strained and loud. A few times she stopped breathing. Eventually her breathing calmed a bit and she regained consciousness but wasn’t talking. I found out her name was Karen and I started talking to her. I urged Karen not to move in case she had a spinal injury. I dropped my head down close to the floor so I could catch her eyes and I held her hands. Eventually she tried to speak and the first thing she said was, “who are you?”. I stayed with her and talked to her until the paramedics arrived. Her climbing partner Robin was so upset. She was so sure she had done something wrong. Karen asked for Robin a few times while she was laying there. It was both sad and sweet to see the way they talked to each other in this crisis. When EMS got there, they were insensitive, and also all men. We were trying to unlock Karen’s phone to call her husband and upon swiping down to reveal her calendar for the day, one man said “oh, she has plans to run with a friend later—that’s probably not going to happen” and he chuckled. He was in close proximity to both women. Fuck that guy. Karen survived! She has a broken pelvis and broken ribs, but hopefully no brain damage or other injuries. Even though I know she’s okay, and even though people told me I did a great job, I feel terrible. I’m not sure I can even articulate exactly why. Karen is fine! She’s surviving—she was even laughing at the hospital. But I just keep wanting to cry. And I can’t stop replaying it all in my head. A few times at the beginning her breathing stopped and I was so afraid she was going to die. I’ve invested so much in this sport where people die. It’s my livelihood. A hobby you risk death for...sounds pretty fucking stupid.
What is the biggest change you'd say you've been through in the past ten years?
My mental health/stability/ability to think outside of myself. I’ve learned to focus on others and be more understanding and supportive. Which is pretty cool. I think going off of oral contraceptives had a huge impact on my mental health...I was on it from 2006/7-2013–going off of that and finding climbing changed a lot for me.
Basically I used to be a sad asshole, and now I’m not.

Mark Rothko, Untitled (Black and Gray), 1969
Acrylic on canvas, 68 X 60 1/8 inches

I don’t immediately recognize if this is a much brighter and bluer version of one of our many dark 1969 Rothkos (collected here: 1 2 3 4) but even if we have seen this before, it’s certainly a revealing surprise. As frequent readers of this blog may have noted, generally Rothko’s “Black and Grays” are scanned as just that. The variations are there but we only see a hint of grey-green or a coat of brown, nothing so oceanic and free as this. The top part here is typically black as night but the lower portion shows us how layered Rothko’s work really is. These blues and white-yellows churn under greys and give movement to what seems flat and stagnant in a poor scan. Even if this is a little lighter than the naked eye might see, it’s great to see the underpinning. Seen in person it would not be surprising to see underpainting of mauve or dark purple tones on the upper half.
i’m so done with the way girls in twenties are treated. i’m so done with people who literally create timetable for us. 20- 24 find a guy, 24-26 make him propose to you, 27-29 get married. i’m so done. i’m do not want to get 2 a.m texts from my best friend who is freaking out that she is gonna die alone. i do not want see my 20 years old friend wasting her time on some guys who are not even interested in her. i do not want see us falling for every nice guy who does not look creepy. i do not want to see girls get sad or paranoid just bcos they do not fill in the schedule. you are ok. you should enjoy your life at its fullest and one day you will find 10/10 so do not pursue 6 just because you do not want to be single. it is ok and one day you will find someone. do not split your love with people who does not deserve it. keep it for yourself and when time will come you will know. i know it hurts. i know you wish u could just open part of yourself and release the buzzing love. but not every kind of love is romantic. show it to your family, friends, plants, yourself.
Not a real criticism, just an expansion really, but … it’s not just the timetables we need to get away from, but the goal itself, I think. “One day you will find someone,” sounds comforting, but the reason it doesn’t lay fears to rest is because we are all smart enough to know it’s not necessarily true.
My aunt is over sixty, never married, and never, so far as I am aware, ever even had a great romance. She dated a lot, but never clicked and now seems to have given up. My mentor is over seventy, divorced her asshole husband more than half her life ago and has never found anyone since.
We all know women (and men) like these. And because we know them, we know that “one day you will find someone,” is just … hogwash. Because sometimes you just … don’t. Or sometimes you do, but he turns out to be a cad. Or you do and the universe rips you apart in the most unfair way possible. And because society has us so fixated on finding “our other half” or whatever, we view these women as cautionary tales.
But …
My aunt trains dogs. Her schipperke is the national champion for his breed. She spent so much of her life as a librarian, nurturing the love of books in kids, myself among them. I ride horses because of her, and it’s one of the very few things I do that makes my soul feel at peace.
My mentor is one of the best criminal defense attorneys in her state. She has devoted her life to fighting to ensure that everyone gets a vigorous defense. Because of her countless people have had the opportunity to turn their lives around. Because of her, they’ve had a life to turn around. Because of her, the prosecution and the police in her jurisdiction are forced to behave ethically and adhere to the rule of law. She’s still, even now fighting to abolish the death penalty. It’s because of her that I am pursuing the life I am.
These women’s lives are not nothing. In fact they are a whole lot of something, and it makes my heart hurt that I ever, in my dark 3 am’s, thought of their lives as something to be avoided at all costs.
So love your family, your friends, your pets, your gardens. Love your job or your hobby or your raison d’ etre, whatever it is. Love sunsets and the smell of rain and yourself, and don’t love these as something to do as a placeholder until the buzzing, romantic love comes, but love these as things worth loving all in themselves.
It’s fucking hard some days. The dark 3 am’s still come sometimes. But most days, I am so much more at peace knowing that I am not incomplete or waiting, but that my life, if it ended today, is worth it because of the platonic, familial, friendship love I have shared. And if the other kind does come someday, that’ll be nice, but it won’t make any of the others less. It’ll just be caramel sauce on a sundae–tasty and wonderful, but the sundae was perfect without it too.
I needed this today.
I feel incredibly sad.
Not happy with my body. Having body image issues. Not happy. Annoyed that I couldn't wish my ex a happy birthday because he can't handle it. Not happy with commuting 2 hours per day. Possibly pmsing. Unintentionally sang to myself in the car to calm myself. Because I'm stressed. Picked up sip and bite late after work. Watched supernatural. Drank Chardonnay. Listening to more music. Should I apply for this new position in the company? Idk. Idk. There's no time and too much shit. And no money. I have too much care and intention and not enough time.
