Re(member)ing
I knew she wouldnât answer.
I called to hear her voice. The voicemail greeting was not enough.
I looked on YouTube for a video of her. Durham was thick in her voice.Â
Re(member)ing the reasons I am holding on.
Why donât she want me anymore?
The question that repeats over and over.Â
I know this is more about me than her. The insecurity that comes from being rejected repeatedly in personal and professional matters.
Being courted by people & things I am uninterested in just exacerbates the situation.
Re(member)ing to choose me. To pick me.
Especially when no one else does.
sheâs right listen to her

Ma Rainey is believed to have been born on April 26, 1886 in Columbus, Georgia (some sources, including the 1900 Census, say September 1882). She began performing as an early teenâentering a talent show somewhere between the age of 12 and 14. Then, she began performing in tent shows for her church and was soon touring the country as a member of minstrel shows.
Ma Rainey was introduced to the blues around 1902, but didnât began recording until the early 1920sâafter Mamie Smith blazed a trail by becoming the first black woman to record a record. Her first recordings (all accompanied by Lovie Austin and Her Blues Serenaders) were made in December of 1923 with Paramount Records. Ma Rainey recorded over 100 records over the next five years and was subsequently billed as âThe Mother of the Bluesâ.Â
Prove It On Me Blues - Ma Rainey
I went out last night with a crowd of my friends It mustâve been women, âcause I donât like no men.
âWhen you read the words of Langston Hughes you are reading the words of a Black Gay man. When you read the words of Alice DunbarNelson and Angelina Weld GrimkĂ©, poets of the Harlem Renaissance, you are reading the words of Black Lesbians. When you listen to the life-afïŹ rming voices of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey, you are hearing Black Lesbian women. When you see the plays and read the words of Lorraine Hansberry, you are reading the words of a woman who loved women deeply.â
