The Seer: Usoppâs embellished stories are a core part of who he is. Everyone who knows him, whoâs even met him, could tell that right away. Only the people closest to him know that most of these stories, no matter how fantastical they seem, end up coming true. When a rival pirate crew catches wind of this fact, Usopp faces the most harrowing challenge of his life. Set pre-timeskip, right after Thriller Bark.

like. oh my godddd oH MY GOD. zoro doesnât tend to verbalize his feelings, which is why a LOT of his character writing is contained in the things other characters say about/to him. so lucci + sanjiâs words are ABSOLUTELY meant to be a reflection of zoroâs inner feelings in egghead.
also, in chapter 331, zoro gets a ââŠâ speech bubble when usopp is talking about being a burden, which is generally one piece speak for âi have unspecified thoughts on this subject that iâm not voicing.â i think it is due to usoppâs talk of weakness, since like usopp, zoro also thinks about weakness a hell of a lot.
usopp felt he was a burden on the crew, now zoro is feeling the same way. so iâm pretty damn sure the zoro crashout is going to reflect usoppâs arc in w7. ohhhh goddd.
zosopp is beautiful because zoro and usopp are both driven by fear and insecurity, yknow? but usopp presents his insecurities frankly, he runs and he cowers, but ultimately he knows how to face up to his fears when the time calls for it. whereas zoro points his insecurities inwards, he trains and he self-isolates and he tries his hardest to believe that they donât bother him, but they do. usopp has the courage to look his fears in the eyes and acknowledge that theyâre there while zoro continually runs from his and tries to mask them with stoicism. so usopp looks at zoro and thinks âhe knows what heâs doing, heâs strong and heâs fearless unlike meâ and meanwhile zoro is thinking âiâm weak iâm too weak i have to become strongerâ and neither of them realize that theyâre chewing on the same insecurity, the same fear of being useless/weak/helpless, that theyâre circling the same self-worth issue.
Heâs screaming as hard as he can as he flies through the air, and he can feel the tears running down his face and his head and his neck and thatâs it, thatâs everything, thatâs his whole world becauseâŠbecauseâŠ
He canât think it, he canât think anything. Itâs just one scream, one big scream, over and over and over untilâŠ
UntilâŠ
-
Luffy lands with a crash, gasping as his scream (barely there anymore) is cut short. He just lies there, trying to breathe his voice back to life, unaware of anything other than the pain of the air in his lungs and prickly sensation of ground against his skin.
Time must pass, because he starts being able to breathe again without it hurting too bad. And with that, everything else floods back in, and Luffy frowns as he feels something against his back.
That thing is wetness, he discovers, and instantly shoots up into a seated position, trying to shake off the water clinging to his clothes and skin.
The second thing he feels, which hits him like a punch to the gut, is the cold.
Luffy shoots up to his feet with a cracked âYEOUCHâ as the cold hits him fast, leaping around and trying to warm up. Itâs cold, and he can feel his teeth chattering (were they like that the whole time?) as he jumps, arms waving around as he tries to bring some sort of warmth back into his body.
âOkay!â Luffy says out loud, voice cutting out with a hoarse grunt at the end of the word. âOkay, letâs get warmed up! Letâs get all warm and then go and find everyone and thenâŠand then go ahead to Sabaody again!â
His voice trails off and doesnât return by the end of that sentence again, so he clears his throat, still hopping around. Heâs still wet, but the cold is getting a little bit better, which is great. Itâs great, butâŠ
The new warmth is reaching his head and digging into his brain andâŠand the things that are there, just below the surface, of everything that just happened and what he saw are threatening to explode out here and now and that canât happen. If that happens Luffy wonât be able to do anything and if he canât do anything then he canât get anyone back and if he canât get anyone back, thenâŠthenâŠ
Luffy shakes his head vigorously, even though it makes him kind of dizzy. âNo!â He says, finally stopping in place. âLetâs go! Letâs go find my out of here! Letâsââ
âHey!â
A short bark echoes into his ears, and Luffyâs head shoots up from the ground. He blinks, finally taking in his surroundings, and finally realizes that the wet and cold is from the snow heâs surrounded by.
Luffy laughs, rubbing the back of his head. âItâs the snow, huh?â He says out loud, trying to swallow around his aching throat. âMakes sense!â
He hears the âHey!â again and focuses on the sound. A figure is approaching in the distance, getting faster and faster as he approaches. âWho are you?â
Luffy waves at the figure. âHi!â He says. âIâm looking for a way out of here. Can you help me?â
The person finally gets close enough that Luffy can see them a bit better around all the coverings and coats. Itâs a short, stocky man, and he looks a little angry.
Well, not like Luffy isnât used to that. âI need to sail out of here,â He tells the man as he approaches closer. âWhere do I go?â
The man gestures at him to come closer. âSure,â He says. âI can help you get to where you want to be. Iâll show you what you need.â
âGreat!â Luffy bounds over. âWhat do Iââ
He feels a click and something tight settle on his wrists. He looks down at the handcuffs on his hands, and his eyes bug out of his head with an âEH?â of confusion.
-
âWho are you guys?â Luffy tugs at the cuffs, trying to shake the familiar woozy feeling of seastone out of his head. âCome oooon, tell me! And let me go!â
Heâs just tugged harder, so hard he nearly falls flat on his face. âOkay, fine!â Luffy says as they turn a corner. He blinks fast, trying to stay awake. âYou donât have to tell me. Let me go, though! I have stuff to do!â
A sudden gust of wind comes in, hitting him deep in his bones. âItâs cold!â He squeaks, brain clearing in a second from the shock. âCome on, let me go! Or Iâll do it myself!â
His thoughts are interrupted again by a smack to the back of his head. âOuch!â He says, more in surprise than pain.
âShut up!â A gruff voice barks, bounding around his head like a headache. âKeep moving!â
Luffy shakes off the hit, feeling his body start to shake from impatience. Heâd warned them. He has a crew to save and no time to waste at all.
He stands straighter, stopping in place. âGuess Iâll do it myself,â He says, lifting his arms and swinging them towards the hard, frozen ground.
-
âWhat on earthâŠâ
Luffy looks up, dusting his hands enthusiastically. âHm?â
Four men stand there, staring at the scene around them with wide eyes. A small, cut-off groan echoes from somewhere along the sea of injured and unconscious bodies tossed here and there.
Across from them, the rest of the now freed prisoners huddle together, wide-eyed and unsure.
âOh!â Luffy puts his (now handcuff-less) hand behind his head, smiling uncertainly. âHi! Youâre not gonna fight me too, are you?â
He sees the men look at each other. One awkwardly clears his throat. âUm. No.â
âGreat!â Luffy spins towards them, grin firmly fixed on his face and mind firmly fixed on his goal. âCan you show me the way out of here? I have somewhere that I have to be.â
The men look at each other again. One nudges another, who steps forward. âActually,â the man says, voice wavering slightly. âAre youâŠare you Straw Hat Luffy?â
Luffyâs hand rises to his head automatically, getting a handful of hair instead of beat-up straw. âOh,â He says, remembering that Hat is in Usoppâs care for now. âUm, yeah. I am. Is that a problem?â
If it is, no problem. Heâll fight out of there and keep going. He needs to keep going.
âNo!â The man says, so quickly that he stumbles over his words. âNo. Um. Actually. Weâre with the Revolutionary Army. You know them, Iâm guessing?â
The words whizz through Luffyâs head, and it feels familiar and mostly good. But he doesnât have room for familiar and good right now. All he has room for is to go now. âOkay,â He says. âAre you leaving here? Iâm coming with you. And show me how to get to Sabaody.â
The men look at each other again. âYeah,â Their agent says carefully. âWeâre leavingâŠweâre going back to headquarters. I think we can help you from there. I think we can help each other.â
And thatâs all Luffy had needed to hear.
âWhereâs your ship?â He asks, readying his stance.
The man cautiously points. âThere?â He says, practically a question.
âOkay!â Luffy says, winding up his arms. He stretches out, grabbing the group in one sweep, then gallops towards the direction they pointed in. âLetâs go!â
He ignores the shouts of protest and takes off as fast as he can.
-
It turns out, the place theyâre going to isnât really that far away. The group that takes him there tells him a whole bunch of stuff about their base and how secret it is, but Luffy isnât really paying any attention. Honestly, he canât even bring himself to care about it at all right now.
Instead, he sits there on the ship, knee jumping impatiently and fingers tapping onto his thighs. Sitting still feels impossible, not when thereâs so much to do and his crew to get to. Everything is slow slow slow when it shouldnât be.
He doesnât know how many are we there yets it takes, but eventually they approach shore. He makes his way to the deck and, at the startled sounds of the other sailors with him, launches himself to land before the ship has fully docked.
He turns around, fists on his hips, tapping his foot. âWhatâs the holdup? Letâs go already!â
One of the group shakes his head. âD clan,â He mutters. Then, more loudly: âWe need to bring the ship around first. Then, weâll get you to where you need to go.â
Luffy lets out a loud huff. And waits. And waits. And waits.
-
When the rest of them finally make it to shore, they start leading him across the island and Luffy can finally start to notice his surroundings.
For a moment, he thinks theyâre back to where they came: itâs all white and powdery and it crunches under his feet as he walks. He blinks a couple times, then realizes he isnât cold and that the powdery stuff isnât cold either.
One of the group notices his confusion. âWeâre in Baltiago,â He says. âIt all looks like this. Itâs main headquarters, by the wayâŠnormally, we wouldnât bring any outsiders here, but these are special circumstances, as Iâm sure you know.â
Luffy doesnât know, and doesnât particularly care. âThis is how I can find my way to my crew?â He asks impatiently, bumping up his walking speed.
The man nods. âBossâll be able to get you anywhere you need to go,â He says. âConsidering the circumstances, youâll need to go about it carefully.â
Luffy nods without really thinking about it. âOkay,â He says. âAs long as I can go back, Iâll do it.â
He walks, letting himself just move forward step by step, until he runs into someoneâs arm. He looks up, blinking, and notices theyâre in front of a large, closed door.
The man who put his arm up to stop him taps him. âWe just need to make sure the boss is ready to talk to you,â He says. âGive us a minute, and weâll call you in.â
Luffy sighs, but allows them to walk ahead, open the door, then slip through and close it again.
A minute? Well, all right then.
So, Luffy counts silently under his breath. Once he reaches 60 seconds, puffs up a breath, then strides forward and flings the door open.
âMinuteâs up!â He announces to the room, striding in. âSo when can you get me back to Sabaody?â
Everyone in the room looks up at him instantly, startled. Itâs a huge room, with a large table in the middle with a bunch of chairs. Would be great for a banquet, with a lot of food.
Oh. Food.
Luffy realizes that heâs actually kind of hungry. It had been a distant instinct, overcome with all theâŠsituation of everything, but he kind of feels it distinctly now. Thatâs probably good, right?
âIâm kind of hungry,â He tells the group, walking towards them. âDo you have any food too?â
The guy who walked him in straightens, âLuffy,â He says. âWellââ
âLuffy.â
A deeper voice interrupts him. Luffy glances over at the man who talked, who until now had been seated quietly at the head of the table.
Slowly, almost carefully, the guy stands up âLuffy,â He says again, âItâs been a while. Itâs nice to see you again.â
What?
Luffy squints at the guy. Heâs tall, with long spiky hair and a tattoo over his eye.
âWhoa,â Luffy says, âNice tattoo.â
WaitâŠthereâs something about itâŠ
The guy smiles slightly but he almost looksâŠscared? âThanks.â
Then it clicks.
âHey!â He points at the guy. âItâs you! I know you! You were at Loguetown!â
The guyâs smile widens a bit. âI was,â He says. âGood to see youâre doing well.â
âYeah,â Luffy says, then shakes his head. He needs to focus! âButâŠIâm gonna need help one more time. Iâve heard you can take me back to Sabaody, and I need to go. I need to get to my crew.â
The guy nods at the rest of the group, and they quietly back out of the room. âLuffy,â he says. âIâm sorry, but we canât take you there now. We have to wait.â
Luffyâs jaw drops. âBut they said!â He insists. âThey said you can get me there!â
âThe situation isââ
âFine,â Luffy interrupts, folding his arms. âIf you canât help me, Iâll get there myself. Iâll just get on the closest boat andââ
âWait!â The guy says, standing up. Heâs tall, like really tall. âYou canât yet, Luffy. You have to understand what youâve just done. The government is out to get you, and theyâre not going to hold back. If they find you now, they will kill you.â
Luffy frowns. âAnd? Iâll fight back, no problem!â
The guy shakes his head. âNot as you are now, youâre not.â He says. âYou wonât be able to handle what they have. Theyâd kill you in a heartbeat.â
âBut Iââ
âIf you canât defeat Kuma,â the guy interrupts, voice stern. âHow can you think of trying to defeat the world government?â
Luffy feels himself oomph, like heâs been punched in the stomach. His mouth opens, but the words donât come out.
âLuffy,â The guy says, his tone kinder now. âIâm not saying this to make you feel bad, or make you upset. Iâm saying this in order to give you the best possible chance you have. If you want to win, you have to be ready for it. Otherwise, youâll die. No second chances, nothing.â
Luffy feels his breathing start to go funny. âMyâŠmy crewââ
He feels something heavy on his shoulder, and startles. He looks up and sees the guyâs hand perched firmly on his shoulder, looking determined but kinda awkward too. âTheyâre safe,â The guy says. âIâm sure of it. Kuma sent you to me, so Iâm sure he sent them to safety too.â
âWait,â Luffy says, his breathing still not back to normal. âHow do you know that? That theyâre okay? How do you know that for sure?â
âBecause I know Kuma,â The guy says. His hand is still on Luffyâs shoulder. âI know this is hard to believe right now, but heâs on your side here. He was helping you all out. Did he give you anything before he sent you off?â
âGive meâ?â
The hand on Luffyâs shoulder gets removed. He kind of misses the pressure. âCheck your pocketsâ.
Luffy sticks his hands in the pockets of his shorts, rooting around untilâŠ
He pulls out a piece of white paper. âThis is Aceâs Vivre card, I donât know what thatââ
He pauses. He distinctly remembers putting that card in his vest pocket. This isâŠ
The guy nods knowingly. âThere we go. Kuma will have given you that, and to all your crew, so you can find your way back to each other.â
Luffy stares at the card til his eyes start to blur. âHow do you know that?â He asks, feeling fuzzy. âHow would youâŠwhy would Kuma do this? Any of this?â
âLike I said,â The guy replies, like heâs somewhere far away. âI know Kuma. I know that this wasâŠprobably difficult for you to endure. But for whatever reason, he did this to help you. You can trust me on this.â
A sudden rage floods his insides. âWhy should I?â He demands. âYouâre just some guy. How am I supposed to believe you?â
He expects (wants) the guy to get mad at him, to yell back. He needs to move right now, he needs to fight. He needs to do something thatâll at least get him moving forward becauseâŠbecauseâŠ
The guy doesnât get mad though. Instead, his face goes all weird, like heâs sad. But not really. âLuffy,â He says, then pauses. âI knowâI know this might not be enough. But. The thing isââ
Whatever the guy is about to say is interrupted by a loud crash of the doors flying open. A small echo of âstop! Donât go in!â floats into the room, but Luffy canât really hear it.
He canât hear anything, not really. Because through the doors, running and panicked, is another guy. He has a tall hat and goggles and blond hair and a large scar on the side of his face thatâŠthatâŠ
The blond guyâs panicked eyes lock onto his own, and they go wide. Luffy is just as frozen, and something is screaming at him in his head because this isâ
And then the screaming gets louder and louder and all white and thatâs all Luffy knows for a while.
-
Luffy comes to with a gasp.
He doesnât know how much time has passed, but itâs gotta be a fair amount because heâs in a new place now, some sort of bedroom with a huge bed and high ceilings. He has new clothes too, and he can see his vest and shorts propped up on a chair in front of the bed.
He doesnât have time for more though becauseâ
Luffy jumps out of bed so quick he almost faceplants. He has so much to do but first. FirstâŠ
âLuffy.â
He startles, and whips around to the side. The tall tattoo guy is there, looking just as surprised. He hadnât even realized that guy was there.
âTake me to him,â He demands, feeling the frantic energy begin to overflow in his chest. âI need to see him.â
Tall tattoo guy doesnât fight him on it. He just nods. âI thought you might,â He says. âHeâs awake now, so itâs fine. He remembers now too.â
Thereâs a lot of questions he could ask, but heâs beyond that right now.
The journey passes by in a blur, and before Luffy knows it heâs flung open a door to another room, and sitting there on the bed in the corner isâitâsâ
He meets a startled gaze, which softens immediately. âLuffy. Iâve missed you.â
Luffy feels himself start to breathe funny again. âSaboâŠ?â He chokes out.
And Sabo (itâs him. Itâs him itâs him itâs him itâs him) smiles at him.
âIâm sorry,â Sabo says, and his voice is shaking, just a little. âIâŠI wish I remembered sooner. I promise, I promise, I wouldâve come and find you if I could. IâdâŠIâd forgotten you. Both of you.â
There are so many things Luffy could say right now. He could say how could you have forgotten or where have you been or how did you remember or are you coming with me now but he doesnât. He doesnât say any of it. He canât. He canât.
And then. Saboâs smile starts trembling too. âI heard you saved Ace,â He says. âThank you, Luffy. Thanks to you, I can see him again too.â
Something shatters, and before Luffy knows it heâs running, running and jumping into Saboâs arms, crying and crying and crying and crying.
Sabo hugs him back just as hard.
-
Luffy doesnât leave Saboâs side for a while.
He sticks to him like glue. For a few days, heâs wrapped around him almost everywhere he goes. Sabo doesnât say anything, just walks around doing whatever work heâs doing with Luffy stuck to his back or on top of his hat or hanging off his front. Nobody says anything about it either, which is good because Luffy doesnât think he can let go.
When he can stomach doing that, he still tags along for most of the day, trying to get the Sabo-time that he missed all those years back again. He knows that it wonât really help no matter how hard he tries, but heâs going to try.
The most helpful part about it is nights. Luffy had never really gotten used to sleeping on his own. Ever since finding Dadan and the others, then Ace and Sabo, then his crew, he had never slept a night not surrounded by his family and friends. Here, he had Sabo, which helped tremendously to fill the hole left behind of his crew. Sabo didnât have Zoroâs deep snores, or Chopperâs soft fur, but heâs familiar and family and Luffy finds that he can still sleep at night if he can hear him nearby.
Sabo also helps in convincing him that his crew is okay. He might not trust tall tattoo guy, but he knows Sabo wouldnât lie to him. If Sabo tells him that theyâre okay, that this Kuma guy was actually helping them, heâll believe him. Of course he will.
Still. He does need to contact them. He needs to figure out how theyâll reunite.
The good thing is, it doesnât take long to figure out. Only a few days in, right after he can handle not needing to be physically attached to Sabo all the time, Tall Tattoo Guy comes to see him again.
He hadnât been around for a few days (Sabo had said heâd been busy or something), but heâd just walked in one day, when Sabo was sitting in one of the meeting rooms doing some reading, and Luffy sitting on his shoulders, peeking over his hat at the documents. Just because he didnât need to be stuck to Sabo didnât mean he wouldnât do it sometimes.
Sabo looks up in surprise, almost dislodging Luffy from his head. âBoss!â
Tall Tattoo Guy nods at them, then sits down across from them. âSabo, Luffy,â He says. âI think itâs time to move onto the next step.â
Here, he looks up at Luffy, directly meeting his eyes. âYou said you wanted to contact your crew, correct?â
Luffy nods so hard he almost overbalances off of Sabo. âYes!â He says. âI need to tell them when we can meet again.â
âI thought so,â Tall Tattoo Guy says. âThereâs a way I came up with. Can you craft a message only they would understand?â
âOf course,â Luffy responds, without hesitation.
âThen comes with us on our next operation,â Tall Tattoo Guy says, glancing down at Sabo. âHeâll need to be out in the field anyway. This way, you can stay with Sabo and also do what you need to do. I can make sure youâre photographed and on the front page of every newspaper on the grand line and beyond.â
Luffy yahoooos and leaps off Saboâs head. âLetâs go!â He says, heart lighter than itâs been since his encounter with Kuma. âI need to get the message to them!â
As he runs off to grab what he needs, he hears Saboâs quiet voice in the background: âYou need to tell him.â
And, a faint response. âI know.â
-
To his surprise, they board a ship.
He hasnât thought they would let him leave the island, and he instantly perks up as it departs towards the open sea. Itâs where heâs felt most at home, after all.
Sabo stands next to him at the side of the boat, watching the waves slap gently against the dark wood. âWeâre going to a raid site,â He tells him. âA minor one. You know, mostly inconvenient for the marines than anything. Some cut power and stuff. They wonât expect it for something so small, and itâll give us enough time to get pictures of you. The governmentâll hate you for it, but they already do so it doesnât matter really.â
Luffy nods. He gives Sabo a wide grin. âCan you be in the picture too?â He says. âI want my crew to see you!â
Sabo gives him a grin back. âWeâll see,â He says.
A small cough nearby interrupts them.
Luffy cranes his neck to see Tall Tattoo Guy standing nearby. âOh! Hi!â
Tall Tattoo Guy nods. âSabo,â He says. âCan you give us a moment?â
Sabo nods, then ruffles Luffyâs hair. âWhen I come back, you need to tell me where your hat went.â
âDeal,â Luffy says.
He can hear a quiet âgood luckâ as Sabo passes Tall Tattoo Guy, but he doesnât really know what that means.
The guy looks at him for a bit, and then walks stiffly next to him. He leans against the side of the ship, and Luffy shrugs and does that too.
The sun has just about hit the top of the sky, and there isnât a cloud in sight. The sea breeze is gentle, and Luffy can feel it ruffle through his Hatless head. Itâs kind of a weird feeling.
âLuffy,â The guy says. âYou know how I told you thereâs a reason I wanted to help you?â
âYeah,â Luffy says, half paying attention.
âThis is the reason,â The Guy says. He swallows, then continues. âMy name is Monkey D. Dragon.â
Luffy nods. âOkayâŠ?â He says. âWhat does that mean?â
Thereâs a short silence. âMaybe your grandfather didnât tell you,â the guy mutters, then. âLuffy. Iâm your father.â
âOh,â Luffy says. He scratches his ear. âOkay.â
Another silence. âUm,â The guyâDragonâsays âDid youâŠdid you have any questions? Or anything to say to me?â
âNot realâoh!â
âWhat is it?â Dragon sounds a little anxious now.
âGrandpa did tell me! When we were on Water 7. I guess you were right.â Luffy leans back against the ship again. âCool name.â
Dragon just stares at him. He doesnât seem as put together as he usually is. âAre youâare you upset?â
âNo?â Luffy says. âWhy? Should I be?â
âWell,â Dragon says slowly. âI guessâŠweâve never met before now, and weâre family, soâŠâ
Luffy shrugs. âNot really.â He says. âBut, hey. I heard you took care of my brother all these years. I guess I have you to thank for that.â
Dragon just stares at him, then sighs. Then, with the faintest of smiles, says âYouâre welcome.â
-
After he comes back from sending his crew a message, Luffy knows he has to make a choice.
Dragon had been right, that first time. As he is now, Luffy wouldnât be good enough to take down anyone whoâd want to hurt them. He had been beaten by Kuma, resoundingly. And that couldnât happen again. It just couldnât.
So, when he gets back, he speaks to Dragon about it.
âI want to get stronger,â He tells him. âTeach me how.â
Dragon just nods. âI thought youâd ask,â He says. âI already have a plan for you, should you want to go through with it.â
Luffy feels a grin spread across his face. âWhat is it? They better be strong, or Iâll pummel âem into the sky!â
Dragon looks at him kinda funny. Not funny-bad, but not necessarily funny-good either.
âWhat?â Luffy demands. âWhat is it?â
âItâs justâŠâ Dragon gives a small smile. âI can tell he raised you. Youâre so much like Garp.â
Luffy wrinkles his nose âEw.â
Dragon bursts out into a laugh so sudden that Luffy nearly jumps. Heâd never heard him be so loud before. âDamn right,â He says. âSorry. I didnât mean that in a bad way.â
Luffy pulls a face. âHeâs your dad, huh,â He says sympathetically. âThatâs so weird. I canât imagine him as a dad.â
âHeâs your grandfather, though?â Dragon says, sounding kinda amused.
âSo?â Luffy says, tilting his head. âWhatâs that got to do with it?â
âItâsââ Dragon stops himself, then shakes his head. He seems to do that a lot. âNever mind. So, you want to hear my training plan for you or not?â
Luffy immediately forgets about the conversation. âYes! I do!â
âHave you ever heard,â Dragon says, âOf Silvers Rayleigh?â
-
Itâs not a reunion Luffy expected, but heâs happy about it.
The old man from Sabaody turns out to be really, really talented in the Haki stuff. Which Luffy had kind of already known, but it definitely feels different when heâs being smacked around with it for training.
Itâs nice, though. The first time he feels the thrummm that Rayleigh tells him is Observation Haki, Luffy almost falls over himself in delight.
âThat was so COOOOL,â He yells, leaping up and down. âHey, old man? When am I gonna do what Usopp can? The stories thingy?â
Rayleigh shakes his head. âNever,â He says bluntly. âThatâs level is nigh impossible to reach. You better give up on that.â
Luffy feels his eyes sparkle. âReally?â He asks. âWhoa. I have the coolest crew ever!â
Armament Haki is just as fun. Conquerorâs, thoughâŠ
Well. Itâs effective. Very effective. But itâs not fun. Itâs kinda chilly, even.
Besides the Haki stuff, Sabo helps him train too, which is just so much fun! He brings his friend, Koala, to help a lot, and sheâs really nice and cool too. And super good at fighting!
Dragon is gone a lot. But when heâs around, he starts training Luffy in things too. Simple things mostly, not martial arts like Sabo and Koala, but more on how to use his devil fruit and stuff.
Itâs all fun, until it isnât.
-
Almost half a year in, Dragon shows up while Luffy is doing some training with Rayleigh. âWe have a mission,â He tells Luffy. âWould you like to join? Itâs for the Revolutionary Army, but we might get into combat. Itâll be good practice.â
Luffyâs up immediately. âIâm in!â
âJust so you know,â Dragon says. âThis means youâre gonna be aiding and abetting the Revolutionary Army. If the world government gets wind of this, youâll be in a lot of trouble. Are you okay with that?â
Luffy doesnât think twice. Heâs already in trouble with the Marines anyway. âYeah! Iâm in for sure!â

His enthusiasm dies down the minute they get to the site.
Dragon had told him it was a small village, right around the corner of Baltiago. Theyâd been terrorized by the Marines, something about taxes and not paying them. And the Revolutionary Army was going there to help them out.
Luffy had been okay with that. It kinda felt like when they went to Arlong Park so heâd figured it would be the same.
It had not been the same.
Because when they arrived, there was nothing left. Theyâd been too late. For one reason or another, the Marines had decided toâŠtoâŠ
When the village came into view Luffy had stuttered to a stop. Once heâd realized what he was seeing, heâ
He whirled around, dropped to his knees, and started retching right then and there.
He feels a heavy hand on his shoulder. âWhyââ He gasps. âWhoâdâŠwhyâd theyâŠâ
The hand squeezes his shoulder. âThere isnât even a why, I find,â And thatâs Dragon, because of course it is. âThatâs justâŠthatâs what happens, when this government has power. They hurt people. Just because.â
Luffy tries to stop himself shaking. It doesnât work. âI donât understand.â He says.
âIâm glad you donât,â Dragon tells him. He soundsâŠkinda sad. âButâŠthis is the other side of it, you know. You have the Marines, and the world government. They do this. You have pirates, and they grasp life with everything theyâve got. Me, I could never be a pirate. Not when this is happening. I donât have the strength for it.â
Luffy snaps his head up in shock âIââ
âIâm not blaming pirates or anything,â Dragon says. âIâm just explaining to you why Iâm here. The freedom of it is promising. But after things like thisâŠI canât. I canât search for freedom when so many live in fear.â
Luffy breathes silently for a while, thenâ
âThis is wrong,â He breathes out. âThis is so wrong.â
Dragon pulls his hand back. Then, tentatively, rests it on Luffyâs head. âI know,â He says simply.
âThe pirate king,â Luffy says slowly. âThe pirate king would be able to fix this, right? Heâd have the power to fix this?â
âI canât say, Luffy,â Drgaon responds. He removes his hand from Luffyâs head.
Luffy feels his face tense up, determined. âHe can,â He says. âAnd if he canât, then Iâll make it so that he can.â
Dragon gives him a look. Luffy doesnât know what it means until he says: âI was wrong. Youâre not like him, you know?
Luffy frowns. âWho?â
âGarp. Youâre not like him,â Dragon stands up, and offers a hand to Luffy âYouâre like me.â
Luffy reaches up and takes his hand. âOh,â He says, not really getting it. He gets pulled to his feet. âI guessâŠmaybe I am.â

With half a year to go, Sabo begins to get antsy.
He tries not to show it, but Luffy can tell. He can see it when his eyes go distant, when he can never sit still, when he spaces out of conversations, when he gets caught staring out the window towards the sea.
Itâs a look Luffy is familiar with. Itâs one that stuck to Ace for weeks, right until he left Luffy behind that first time to start his own adventure into the unknown.
He knows whatâs coming, but he decides to wait. Heâs not very good at it, but he tries. He ignores the clear signs and keeps a clear gaze on Sabo, waiting for him to finally break and tell him already.
But Sabo isnât Ace. And Luffy finally realizes, after days and days and days, that he canât wait for Sabo to tell him on his own. He has to say it first.
He does it when Sabo, during a sparring session, spaces out and gets hit smack in the face with a rubbery kick.
Luffy pinches Saboâs nose with a napkin, helping him staunch the blood, and asks: âSo, where is it?â
Sabo blinks at him over watery eyes, voice muffled over his blocked nose. âWhat?â
âWhere is it that you want to go?â Luffy asks, squeezing the napkin a touch harder.
Sabo lets out a muffled chuckle. âYou knew, huh?â
Luffy just stares at him, waiting for the napkin to stop staining red.
Sabo gives a cut-off sigh. Luffy feels it under his hand. âYou know,â He begins. âIâve been so so grateful to have had time with you since youâve been here. And to help you get stronger. God, Luffy, youâre so much stronger now. I know youâre going to achieve your dreams, youâve got everything that it takes.â
Luffy lifts the napkin off to check for blood. It looks like itâs stopped bleeding.
âBut,â Sabo continues. âI donât think thereâs more you can learn from me. AndâŠand I need to catch up with him too. I need to find Ace.â
Luffy tosses away the bloodied napkin as a thought occurs to him. âHe knows, right?â
They hadnât taken the picture together for his crew, because Sabo said it might be too dangerous to have them connected in the world governmentâs eyes. But that might also meanâŠ
Saboâs eyes look haunted now. âI donât know,â He says. âI donât know if my face has made it to wherever he is. And I need to find him. So that one day, we can all reunite together again.â
Luffy collapses into the seat in front of Sabo. He curls up, hugging his knees, keeping his gaze on Saboâs face. âAre you bringing Koala with you?â
Sabo gives a choked laugh. âNah,â He says. âShe needs to be here. But Iâll bring Ace back here eventually. I need to come back one day anyway.â He smiles at Luffy. âLook after her while youâre here, will you?â
Luffy smiles back. âYeah,â he says, then âBring back Ace for me?â
âYeah,â Sabo ruffles his hair. âI will.â

âAre you ready?â
He smooths a hand over his hatless head. âYes!â
Taking a huge leap, he bounds onto the ship, landing at a perfectly balanced stance, facing the open sea.
âAll right!â Luffy says, arms up, looking towards his crew, the reunion heâs waited for for two years, and the journey to come. âLetâs go!â
Now, he knows, itâs time for the real adventure to begin.
I think it would be funny if they teamed up cause crocodile would be so confused on how doflamingo had the entirety of his 10 year evil plan single handedly foiled by usopp
