Lucy & Corin || An Afternoon Together
Lucy had half-expected Corin to decline her picnic invite, but she jumped for joy when Rinassa returned with a smile on his face. Peter had insisted that Rinassa be close enough in case Lucy needed help, and Rinassa assured he would read or play his little flute, putting Lucyâs mind at ease as she set up their picnic. She put in standard tea items - toast, tea and cakes - as well as a few extra goodies, and some sandwiches made by Mrs Beaver.
Now, she waited in the orchard, with Rinassa inspecting apples nearby. He would accompany them a safe distance before heading off on his own, and Lucy felt a little nervous. Rinassa noticed her shaking hands and winked. âLu, youâll do fine. Iâm he likes you as much as you fancy him,â he assured, picking two ripe apples from one of the trees and handing them to Lucy. âHere - for good luck.â
Corin wanted to run away when the sound of cheerful hooves echoed through the hall he was in. He had wanted to be left alone, had said so to all guards and staff, every archenlander and narnian he came upon and insisted to accompany him, but none had listened. It was too dangerous, they said, as if Corin couldnât fight his own battles. It wouldnât do well for him to wander of, they said, as if Corin was stupid enough to walk into enemy fire because he was upset. But the worst thing they said was their terrible, terrible condolences. As if Isla was dead. As if there was no hope at all. Corin had punched a great number of trees since that night, although not the one he really wanted to.
He was, in fact, on his way to find oneâor it, if he was luckyâwhen Rinassa came upon his umpteenth angry walk. He didnât seem to walk on eggshells around him, which was certainly a fresh breath of air, so he let him speak. Rinassa had, very politely but not miserably, extended Lucyâs invitation to have a picnic at the orchard that very same day. Corin thought briefly about declining, considering that she would probably have one of those miserable, pity-filled faces, but decided against it on the grounds that he wasnâtânot at allâfeeling well and Lucyâalways Lucyâcould make him feel better. Besides, there were trees to punch at the orchard.Â
So there he was, after having changed into fresher clothes, walking towards the orchard. All things considering, he was doing marvelously at deflecting the unwanted attention, so there was one good thing about his day so far. Were it not for the thought of seeing Lucy soon, he would probably be distraught. He didnât knowâhe didnât really want to think about it. Thankfully, once past the guarding dryad and the actual guards at the entrance, there were no people to encounter but that whom he sought.Â
The path to the meadow Rinassa had given him directions for was crooked, and coiled like a snake around taller and more vigorous trees that provided ample shadow without hiding all light. The whole trip inside felt like somewhat of an adventure, and it sent aâguilty, undeservedâthrill down Corinâs spine. Soon, he spied between the leaves, a known and welcomed figure, and jumped off the path to sneak around the trees and emerge in the clearing where Lucy sat on a blanket, and Rinassa picked apples from a particularly full tree.
âOh,â he said, trying to hide his disappointment. âI didnât know Rinassa was joining us.â
Lucy & Corin || Before The Throne
Corinâs eyebrows rose when the lady, unknown to him but not to Lucy, it seemed, complimented his love. âIt seems I have competence,â he joked, a big grin on his mouth. âBut I canât say sheâs wrong, you do look beautiful, although Iâd argue you always do, and itâs not only a matter of tonight.â He smiled at her warmly, squeezing the hand in his.
âAs long as youâre not leaving me right now, Iâll be fine,â Corin smiled, sliding  a hand to Lucyâs waist, itching closer. He wanted so much more than this! But it was neither the time nor the moment, and it would only be when Lucy said so. Besides, he was content just to have her by his side, twirl her in his arms. âThen you can come back and sweep me off my feet anytime, although⊠I would very much appreciate a token of your affection, if only to have something to remember you by,â he winked.
Lucy couldnât help blushing at Corinâs words, moreso than when the lady had complimented her. She absentmindedly tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. âOh, certainly you donât think that⊠I look a right mess some mornings!â How Corin made her heart skip⊠She turned away to hide a small smile.
Corinâs hand was on her waist; her skin seemed to heat up in response. Lucy decided to move closer, giving him a wink of her own. âMaybe Iâll sweep you off your feet now and we can away from here! Would you enjoy that?â Moments alone with Corin were moments to be treasured⊠It was nice when Peter and Edmund werenât so close by.
Corin found it particularly adorable when Lucy was bashful. It did not happen often, at least not that he had noticed, and if it did, it was almost exclusively because of him. It made him feel as though something he had done was right. Besides, when Lucy did something, it was always much lovelier than when other girls did it. âWell, I have yet to see you in the morningsâand although Iâd argue you look equally beautiful at all times of day, I must remain certain of my beliefs unless proven otherwise,â he smiled warmly. âAnd I most certainly believe that.â
Lucy reacting so favorably to his touch only made him more excited and a tad more nervous. He had the instinct to giggle at her wink, which wouldâve been a right disaster, but he contained and instead managed to grin it out, basking on the heat of her person. âOh, Iâd like to see you sweep me off my feet,â he laughed. âAnd I would very much love to be away from here, wherever you lead, Iâll follow. Besides, I thought I saw Edmund looking our way and, though I love him dearly, Iâd much rather keep only your company.â
Iâll Even Fight the Squirrel There | Petra & Corin
Petra playfully rolled her eyes. âWhat is it with you royals and never forgetting offenses?â she groaned, thinking on how Edmund liked to playfully tell her heâd behead her for her many âoffensesâ. Still, such a statement doubtless was indicator of at least near-normalcy. She knew well enough from Susan that Corin was known as a playful type, and he clearly was getting more and more so by the moment.
âThere is nothing to forgive, Corin.â She said nonchalantly, noting that her glass was down to only a sip or two left. Still, his change of tone didnât pass her, she was touched by it. âItâs just that⊠well thereâs a lot to what happened. A lot I canât really say. His words made her nod, she knew what he was saying â she understood it. âI knowâŠâ she said softly, sighing, tilting her head back against the tree. âIâm attempting it. Though Iâm afraid that once my trust is betrayed itâs hard to regain it, and there will always be a doubt. And even though I know itâs merely Susanâs nature, thereâs more to it than Iâve said and thereâs no way to know for sure in the future. A part of me is far too cautious of letting her in too much again, and itâs winning.â She drained her glass, unsure what to do with it before she set it on the grass. âYes, Edmund and I areâŠ.good friends. Heâs very sweet ultimately.â More than such.
She nodded at his statement, a small smile on her face, squealing inwardly at how bloody cute he was in what he was saying, his declarations having her full support. She was honored he was being so open with her after just meeting her,and although she didnât tell him, he was quickly making himself a place in her mind. Finally she laughed, toasting her empty wineglass at his finals statement before he grinned widely and asked about Lucy. âWas she excited? Yes.â She answered. âWhat did she like about you? Honestly, you flatter my memory too much to explain every little thing sheâs said in compliment.â Lucy has a real treasure here. Hope she doesnât let him get away. She mused to herself.Â
âWell, however else are we to remain in power if we do not behead all those who talk badly of us? Oh, Petra, do use your head,â he said, rolling his eyes, but he was very clearly joking. He always tried not to come off too proud or standoffishââyour concerns are ridiculous,â had said Aravis, ânobody would call you standoffishââbut he was always too big and loud and knocked people over, saying the wrong things. He thought it would be good to learn how to control that but he had no patience for growth of the quiet kind.
Corin nodded, understanding. He would not pry, although he was vaguely curious as to what could Susan have done to arouse such a reaction from Petra, who he thought to be a modest, charming girl. Susan was of a hard character sometimes, and he knew people did not react well to that, but Petra did not seem the sort of girl to break under such advances. Nevertheless, whatever it had been, he had no say in it. âI have been told not to hope for more than what people are willing to give,â he said softly. âIt's terribly demoralizing and I never act on it, but I was told it was useful.â
âIâm glad you and Edmund are good friends! Iâve never actually heard any gal call him sweetâthatâs definitely unprecedented. I donât actually remember if heâs ever been sweet to me, and Iâd reckon weâre good friends Iâve known him since I was young,â he rambled on, a bit pink in his cheeks. In the middle of the dagger throwing and the talking, he had downed that second glass Petra had brought along with her. He toasted his empty glass to her as well and laughed. âPair of drunkards we are, huh?â He said. Oh, his sister surely didnât think this would happen when he sent Petra to fetch him. But he was having a lovely time, despite what had happened, and he listened to Petra with the utmost attention, wide eyes and all. âWell, you donât have to say everything... but honestly, anything will help, I am at a loss as to what she wants of me. I could give her the entire world if she asked, Petra. At least Iâd try very hard.â
Lucy & Corin || Before The Throne
Lucy turned when she felt someone tap on her shoulder - it was one of the many ladies of court, smiling warmly at Lucy. âYour Majesty, I just wanted to say you look beautiful tonight,â she complimented, causing a deep blush to spread into Lucyâs cheeks, and she smiled in return. âOh, thank you! But not as beautiful as you!â she returned, and the lady laughed a tinkling laugh, shaking her head slightly and disappearing into the gathering crowd.
Other dancers were beginning to surround them, and Lucy turned to Corin. âI will be called away eventually for the treaty, but that shouldnât take too long! Then I will be back to sweep you off your feet!â she joked, eyes twinkling. âDonât miss me too much!â

Iâll Even Fight the Squirrel There | Petra & Corin
Oh, he was endearing himself even more to her with his going along with her joke. ââObjectâ?â She shook her head with a laugh. âWould this objection result in relative wrath poured down from beside the throne of the High King by his beautiful princess consort? Cause if thatâs the case, maybe we ought to resort to⊠something else?â Idly she wondered if Edmund was looking for her, hopefully he wouldnât worry if he couldnât find her. Turning back to the present, she smiled impishly. âOh, Iâm sure they do. Iâm still gonna laugh though, because itâs amusing.â And it was another point that they had in common.
His questions sent her mind back to Susan and their falling out. Things were patching up slowly between them, but even now Petra found it hard to trust her. It was painful. Still, she had to nod, though the smile on her face wasnât as bright as before. âYeah she did eventually. I wish it was to something like a marriage.â She answered after a little deliberation. âWe, uh, we had a falling out after I found out she was pregnant. One of those things where I am considered a little extreme that I told you about â you see, I tend to take things very personally, and she kept it a secret from me, and I left.â Licking her lips, she looked toward the light of the hall over some bushes. âSo yeah, thatâs âthatâs why I am no longer a lady. Edmuâuh, King Edmund kept an eye on me while I was in the city, as I have a⊠brother who is rather unsavory, and when I was done with what I needed to do, he gave me a position in the library.â She wished she could say the entirety of the situation, the reason for Edmund truly giving her the position burning in her brain and wishing to come out. But it wasnât time. Still⊠she smiled fondly. âThough honestly it worked out very nice. Iâm not married yet, but I am⊠being courted as a result.â
âMaybe you should just tell her?â Petra offered calmly, turning herself a bit to look at him, his outburst giving her something to go on. There were only two female dryads Petra knew were in Lucyâs company. Asture and Ava. Poor Corin. Irony abounded as she thought of how to calm him down. âItâs not about advantage, you know. You can have the lowest advantage and still win, itâs about tenacity, and ability to stick to what you want.â It was a challenging decision. On one hand she wanted to support him completely, on the other, she was unsure of the dynamic between Lucy and whichever of the girls she liked. She didnât want to cause trouble through her advice. Yet, at his question, she had to smile. âWell, itâs obvious.â She told him, the romantic in her cooing at how adorable he was in his sudden change in attitude when she mentioned Lucy liking him. âShe was ever so excited when you came, and although I wasnât as close to her as to Susan, she always lit up when you were the conversation. As a woman I can assure you that such a reaction is quite typical of one who cares deeply for another.â She put a hand on his shoulder, giving him a smile. âHence why you canât give up quite yet. Especially not with what you just told me.â
Corin seemed to consider it a second, tilting his head and looking inside. âWell, obviously,â he said, âbut I fancy the only one to face her wrath would be me. Peter wonât care much. Honestly, I think itâs a price worth paying just to see Cor as a herald.â He shrugged at her impish smile, sharing one of his own with her. âLaugh at me, then, but I shanât forget this offence,â he teased. It was much more fun being with Petra than he thought it would be. She had certainly cheered him up, but he expected nothing less from a girl who carried up to four (or more) daggers on her at all times. She was certainly much a much more reliable adviser than Cor and Aravis were on their own.
He winced a bit. It seemed as though he had touched on a bit of a sensible topic there with Susan. The last thing he wanted to do was to meddle in Suâs affairs, much less the ones she had going on with Petra, whom he suspected heâd be good friends with in the future, if he stayed. âDo forgive me if I shouldnât have asked, I never have much tact,â he said, softly and sincerely. He never meant any harm, punches aside. âI see. Susan has many secrets, though, and she will never tell them all to you or anybody, I think. Itâs best to make peace with that if you want to keep things right with her.â He wasnât sure his advice was any good or what effect it would have on Petra, but that was one of the things he had learnt from living with Susan. âHow nice of Ed to check up on you! You must be good friends, he doesnât pay much attention to people some of the time. Iâm glad it worked out,â he smiled.Â
âWellâI have told her I liked her. When I kissed her, I mean,â he sighed. âItâs just awfully complicated. Much more than I thoughtâI just had never factored having to compete for it. I thought we would... well, itâs silly, but I thought our friendship would just fade into something more. As easily as breathing.â He was a fool for thinking it would just be as easy as everything else had ever been for him. Lucy was amazing, of course she had many suitors after her. He just never thought they would get any farther than he had. âWell, I want her. And Iâm not going to let anybody take her from me,â he breathed, encouraged by Petraâs words. He was determined to make Lucy love him as much as he loved her. His face split into what he knew was a stupid grin as he heard Petraâs next words, but he didnât care. âIâm never giving up,â he assured happily. âWas she really excited to talk about me? Did she say anything she liked about me? Wait, am I not supposed to ask that sort of thing?â Corin knew nothing about girl codes, but he had heard about them, mostly from the girls at court back home.
Iâve hoarded your name in my mouth for months. My throat is a beehive pitched in the river. Look! Look how long this love can hold its breath.

Lucy & Corin || Before The Throne
Lucy tugged Corin away, away from his brother and Aravis. She would speak with them later, but for now, she and Corin had much to do! Lucy nodded, if a little enthusiastically at the dance request. âOf course! The music should be starting in a moment⊠I should warn you, Rinassa has informed myself and Easlmus that he is the better dance, so I will be dancing with all my might!â
Corinâs grin spread wider at Lucyâs enthusiastic nod. Sometimes it was hard to tell if she actually wanted to do things, seemed as though she was, too, tampering it down. He wondered if that was his fault, if he should be bolder, perhaps, so she would know for sure. But he would rather go slow and keep her at his side than take his own speed and scare her away. âIâll hold your hand until it starts, then,â he said, smiling warmly. âThen we can slide to the dance floor and show Rinassa who is the better dance!â
