Havenly Faves: Outdoor Safe Rugs

Rugs can be a tricky thing to invest in, simply because of the wear-and-tear that normal life throws at them. It gets even more complicated when you're looking for a good looking, sturdy patio rug that can not only take the beatings of footprints, but can also handle all sorts of inclement weather without disintegrating into some pathetic heap of rags that's reminiscent of Carrot Top's hair (click here if you forgot who Carrot Top is).

Designer Tip: How to Hang Your Curtains

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Havenly deals with the pesky problem of hanging curtains. It can be a pain to do them by yourself (and invariably requires rather unwieldy and unattractive tools, such as a ladder, level, and hammer), and they often end up looking rather... wonky, for lack of a better term (PS, let's bring wonky back to our vocabularies! #wonky). Our Director of Design Ops, Shelby Girard, has three insider rules for you, that can help you hang your curtains the way you're supposed to - so that they not only block the sunlight from your eyes when you're hungover on a Sunday morning, but also help tie your room together and make you look like a rock star.

1. Hang curtains all the way to the ground. A 1-2 inch pool on the ground is perfectly okay. 

2. Hang curtain rods at least a few inches above your window frame. Hanging the rods closer to the ceiling will make the space look taller.

3. Hang the curtain rods outside of the window frame so that when curtains are open, they gather mostly outside of the window but still cover the frame. This will make your window look wider since you won't block the view when the curtains are open.

Exclusive Peek: Miley's Dressing Room at the VMA's

Since Sunday night, when everyone's favorite former Disney star displayed her newfound "womanliness" by "twerking," sticking her lizard tongue out, and sexually harassing a life-size Beetlejuice-lookalike and a lot of sad looking bears, the whole world has been abuzz with what went so wrong in Hannah Montana's life to make her think that it was okay to violate a foam finger on national television.

Designer Tip: Designing Around a TV

TVs are often the staples of any great living room (I mean, how else are you going to witness the crazy that is Real Housewives of NY/OC/Beverly Hills/Cleveland from the comfort of your couch?), but it is often difficult to incorporate a large electronic (kind of ugly) box into the decor of your otherwise traditional/shabby chic/sophisticated living room. Havenly's own Director of Design, Shelby Girard, shares these three tips that can help you tie your television into the overall design of your living space:

1. Don't make the TV a focal point - Rather than mounting your television above your fireplace, why not use that precious wall space for a beautiful mirror or piece of art? Take the TV off to the side where it is more in level with your eye line and less of a focal point.

2. Surround the TV with art - Surround your television with artwork to help disguise it and make it part of your design rather than a lonely black box with a rather ugly complexion

3. Accent the wall - Placing your TV in front of a dark accent wall will help disguise it when it's off. Wallpaper or a unique paint job are both great ways to make the wall itself a piece of art.

Treehouses for the Adult

My childhood was marked with hours hiding from my evil older sister, who used to chase me around our house and torment me by squishing my nose down (which was weird, but a horrible and effective way to tease a little sister). I used to find all the nooks and crannies of our house in Maryland to avoid the psychologically damaging torture. Flash forward 20 years and we decided to start a company together (who would have guessed that?), but when I stumbled across this article on Huffington Post Home that showcased eight incredible treehouses around the world, I immediately thought about how useful any one of these would have been when I was a little munchkin and hiding from the most evil person in all the land.

This one is actually part of a Bed and Breakfast in Italy - La Piantata Bed and Breakfast.

Located in Japan, this treehouse is surrounded by cherry blossoms.

Totally eco-friendly cabins (if that's your type of thing) designed by a German design firm

This one is actually a resting place for the Doors' guitarist, Robby Kreiger. Location: California (duh)

Go Inside Molly Sims' Home

If there's one topic that the Havenly team can spend their day talking about, it would definitely be celebrities. We love everything about them, from the fashionable (we still reminisce about J. Lo's Grammy dress), to the  scandalous (Amanda Bynes throws a bong out of her NYC apartment!) to the romantic (Brad and Angelina decide to create a multiracial version of the Jackson 5 with all of their adopted children). And, since we are an interior design start-up, we love being able to look inside celebrities' homes and see exactly how they choose to decorate their most sacred space (in case you couldn't tell by reading the rest of this blog :)).

Domaine Home has an exclusive tour of actress/model Molly Sims' home, and it's awesome. The colonial-style home in Beverly Hills is as calm and chic as Molly herself, and I'm obsessed with the whimsical artwork and the pops of color throughout. I love how it doesn't feel like a museum or even formal - the entire home has a "lived-in" feel that feels cool and casual. Check out more of the pictures here.

Hang out with Martha (yes, that Martha)!

Did you consider signing up for match.com after you watched this awesome segment on the Today Show, because you were dying to hang out with Martha Stewart and this was the only way you knew how? Did your significant other then proceed to find your account and make you sleep on the couch for 2 weeks? Because Who Doesn't want a "Paris Pillow?"

Coinciding with the release of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring (which I'm dying to see), Elle.com has a few pictures of Paris Hilton's home, which makes a cameo in the movie. I have always loved Paris since the release of the masterpiece "Stars are Blind" (let's be real, that was an incredibly underrated song and you're lying if you say you didn't like it) and because she is a rather amusing narcissist to watch.

How much are you dying to get your hands on one of those "Paris" pillows?

Sofia Coppola on what she wants viewers to take away from the film:  "If nothing else, when people see it, they will want a Paris pillow. We might have to make those." 

Hilton on what she hopes viewers learn from watching The Bling Ring: "There's much more to life than all of these possessions and everything. And if you want those things, you're going to have to work yourself, just like I did."
