Don't call it a comeback. (Taken with instagram)
D-Watts at the plate.
Headliners dominate in season-opener
On a night when D-Watts announced that he and Carrie were expecting, Cav announced his love of musical instruments and Holly announced that she could shake what her momma gave her, the Headliners announced that they are yet again contenders in the VMRESSSSSSSSSSSS.
Everybody's favourite slopitch entertainment franchise jumped out to a 22-6 lead against the arch rival Masterbatters en route to a 25-16 win before a capacity crowd on a held-over 2012 opening night at Montgomery Park SE.
The 'Liners actually trailed 6-3 after the first inning, thanks, in part, to the Masterbatters hitting three home runs longer than Klyner's suddenly never-ending hair. The 'Liners didn't get an out that opening frame; they actually didn't get anything close to resembling an out. The next four innings, though, the Masterbatters could manage just two base runners.
"We didn't panick," said team captain Ewen, in between bites of a gigantic marshmallow, one of the signature items in Ewen's Things Holly Looks For In A Man snack night. "Most teams would freaked out after that first inning. Most teams, though, don't have so much sugary goodness when they come back to the dugout."
One of the stars was newcomer Gordon, who went 5-for-6 with three doubles and four runs scoed. A D-Watts disciple, he plans to return for Game 2, with fellow newcomer Aly, next week, saying that he was not scared away by post-game celebrations that included the confirmation of an arriving Baby Watson-Watts, along with Cav predicting a band career for the youngster and Holly showing Ewen some exercises for his lower body.
Oh mercy.
In other news, Brett walked.
Oh mercy.
Besides Gordon, the 'Liner men were also led by lead-off hitter Rintoul, who was 5-for-6 with five runs and hurler Mutis, who was 5-for-6 with two runs. On the women's side, Snarla went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs.
The 'Liners get back into action Tuesday, taking on the Fireballers at Gordon Park SE. (The one where Poppy said that McKaig was his daddy.) Michelle has already announced that she'll be absent, reportedly due to an appearance on Food Network's Chopped.

Two-out rallies doom Headliners
History wasn't on the Headliners' side.
Everybody's favourite slopitch entertainment franchise fell to 4-17 all-time when someone other than Ewen calls out the opening line-up, 5-7-1 when the snacks aren't introduced and 0-1 the week after Cav slighted someone's unborn child after dropping a 20-15 decision to the Fireballers Tuesday at Gordon Park SE.
The two-time reigning VMRESSSSSSSSSSSSS champions started strong, as the opening three hitters scored in the top of the first. They plated only three times the next four innings and found themselves trailing 16-6 after five innings. A three-run sixth and a league-max six-run seventh cut the score to 16-15, but that's the best they could do.
Along with the playoff crowns, the 'Liners also have won the last two regular season titles, finishing 13-1 last year and 12-2 in 2010. Combining regular season and playoffs, they were on a 13-game win streak going into Tuesday, with their last defeat was a 17-16 decision last June 14 to the Shockers.
"Sometimes you get the bull, and sometimes you get the horns. I don't really know what that means, but it sounds like a good thing to say after a loss," said Ewen, who gave up intro duties to D-Tam so that he could instead munch on Cav's Sticks snack attack that was an ode to Brooks.
"I was going to say that I felt like we were ridden hard and put away wet. I don't really know what that means, either, but I know that Klyner reads these at work, and that might get him excited and we need him to concentrate."
The 'Liners did have their pluses on Tuesday. Mutis went 4-for-4, featuring a mammoth solo-shot home run. He was a triple away from the cycle, scored three times and drove in four.
Holly hit a double that sparked the sixth-inning comeback and newcomer Aly, who came off the bench, made a nifty grab at third. The 'Liners also got a couple of stellar defensive plays in the second, with Brett jumping to snag a line drive at short and Cav tracking down a long line drive in centre.
Unfortunately for the 'Liners, they gave up six runs after that glove work in second. All told, the Fireballers' first nine runs came with two outs. Also on the negative side, Ewen loaded up the line-up with five guys off the top, and they combined to score just seven times.
"We weren't good but we were still in the game against a solid squad," said Ewen. "That says something."

The Headliner Nation is in mourning today.

Brooks McNiven and Carol-Ann Neufeld share a tender WTF moment after a collision at third base.

Derran and Carrie Watts skip their way home following another Headliners victory.
Gooey switch hits against the Rhinos at Gordon Park SE on May 17. Headliners won the game to improve its record to 2-0 in the VMRESSSSSS league.
Mutis wins debut on the mound
On a night when they beat Ewen's true love, the Headliners showed off gifts with the glove.
The 'Liners, who treated the grounders off opposing bats like they were jars of lowfat mayonnaise in their season opener a week ago, were sparkling defensively Tuesday night, handing Ewen's adorable wife Carol-Ann and the rest of the Rhinos a 22-5 decision on Bring Your Niece and Bif Naked to the Ballpark Night at Gordon Park SE.
Cav, Mr. Play Everywhere for everybody's favourite slopitch entertainment conglomerate, led the way in the field. Starting in right, he held Rhinos sparkplug John to a single on a sharply hit ball down the line to lead off the game. He did the same to Chad with one out in the fourth.
Brett (exhaustion from honeymoon with Michelle...hubba hubba) returned to the line-up after a one-game absence and was his usual stellar self at short, highlighted by going deep in the hole to hold Nathan to an infield single and keep at least one run from scoring in that fourth frame.
Mutis, making his debut on the mound in lieu of an absent Michelle (exhaustion from her honeymoon...hubba hubba), induced a force out at second to the next batter to leave the bases loaded.
Brett also made a delicous snag on a hot shot off the bat of Stocks in the fifth to get a force at second base and help squelch a Rhino revival. They scored three runs in that frame.
"The Rhinos can swing the bats," said 'Liner captain Ewen, who later denied that was merely shameless sucking up to his wife. "They have one of the top three or four offensives in our league, in my mind. They're not nearly as bad as we made them look."
The 'Liners did most of their heavy swinging in the early frame Tuesday, much like they did in last week's 29-23 win over the Fireballers. They put up a maximum six-spot in the first, highlighted by newcomer Boss's Daughter's RBI single to end off the frame. Three of the six runs came with two outs.
They scored four more in the second, paced by back-to-back-to-back doubles by Rintoul, Brett and Cav.
The offence was spaced out overall, with every spot in the order producing an run scored and an RBI.
Rintoul finished the night 5-for-6 with five runs scored and one RBI, while Cav, who moved to first base midway through the game to give him three different defensive positions (SS, RF, 1B) already this year, was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs.
Snarla continued her strong start to the season, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Boss' was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
It was a rainy day but still a good day for softball.
“We made things interesting for the fans. The defence should come along. And, even if it doesn’t, no one will keep pace with us if we’re swinging the bats.”
Headliners team captain Steve Ewen
It was Scott Rintoul's turn to bring snacks to the Headliners game and he didn't disappoint team captain Steve Ewen.
