“Out of my way–” The sidewalk outside her favorite bagel joint was packed and Lex was not about to miss out on today’s special. “Oof. I’m sorry, but this is important.”

“So important that you can’t slow down, take a breath, and realize that running somebody over like you’re about to do isn’t the best way to start your day?” Bea smiled as she stepped out of the way of the incoming storm-in-a-woman’s-body. “I promise you there will still be food left when you get in there. They told me they’d have the ovens fired up all day.”

Bea Avery-Hastings was the Cool Kid of her generation. She wasn’t the queen bee or the head cheerleader, but she was the girl who didn’t care about anyone else’s opinion. She was so unashamed to be herself in a world filled with teens getting insta-validation that she often felt a little out of place. Thankfully, her father was always there to support her through it. He’d been an outsider to the UES once, and he always understood what she was going through. Because of that, he was her favorite. Her mother--vapid, vain, airheaded Lyndsy--never really seemed to be able to relate to her. The worst part? Lyndsy never noticed that she wasn’t connecting with Bea.

Bea’s fiercely protective of her younger brother, and has been since they were in foster care together over twenty years ago. Her easy-going personality disappears when it comes to him, and not always to his benefit. Usually, though, she was pleasant and friendly to be around. In a lot of ways, her personality seems to contradict itself, but Bea likes to think she’s just adaptable. Despite being incredibly driven and ambitious, Bea’s never been cutthroat, preferring to lift others up and help them achieve their goals as well.

Unfortunately, her focus on work and work-related activities can put a strain on her personal relationships. She’s been known to disappear down a rabbit hole of work for days on end, forgetting to even shoot a quick text to friends that she won’t be making dinner. Because of this, she’s developed a bit of reputation for being inconsistent.

[She says loudly to no one in particular]. Someone get this man a drink, he must be tired from waiting tables all day for the catering team.

Your lap? Uh, no. I mean, that definitely would have made the headlines on Gossip Girl but definitely wouldn’t be the worst thing that’s happened to me this past week so. Don’t worry, I grew up with Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen; I know how precarious silk is.

We’re all good. Cool. I’m glad to hear it… [ Nina? Lyndsy? He mumbled something that sounded vaguely like both ] How are you doing anyway?

Yes, my lap. It’s okay, don’t have a fit. I think you’re cute when you’re confused. They are icons of style, thank god someone was around to teach you the ins and outs of event dress etiquette.

Mhm, we’re fine. [Rolls her eyes at his mumbling and resists the urge to tell him that proper enunciation was important for conducting oneself in public]. I’m fine, always and forever. What’s not to be fine about, really? Everything is peachy. For me, not for you. God, you must be so mad at your dad. How are you?

Yes. It would have been. He was gross. Unless you want to call him back over here and have him spent the next fifteen minutes staring at our necklines. Be my guest. He’s only mostly crusty and disgusting.

“Oh, that’s Chanel? Smells more like the Elizabeth Taylor collection for Kmart. Oh well, you tried your best. Better luck next time.”

“It’s fine if you didn’t get the memo this has the Hunter name on every corner. Feel free to leave after you take whatever appetizer we have that you’re allergic to.” Cami could be harsher than anyone ever taught her to be when she was hurt. She seemed cool and casual, but her heart was breaking all over again. All she asked for was that what she gave was reciprocated and instead she was played with, and Camille Hunter would be damned to ever be compared to Barbie as if she were a toy. 

“I know.” She stared at her as if she had just given a goodbye and was waiting for her to turn to go.

“I guess I must have missed that. Surprisingly you guys didn’t slap your name on every object in this room. Was that the Knightly touch? Seems like her classy input. This is a party after all, not a Grand Prix racecar.” Lyndsy snarked with a grin, fake as they come. She was embarrassed and angry and hurt--and it was all her own fault. She didn’t handle that well.

“Well not as nice as me, obviously, but kudos for trying.” Lyndsy said with a roll of her eyes, anger flashing hot inside her again.

[ Okay so Nate actually did stand back up when she said ‘no’ and he planned wholeheartedly on moping somewhere else but…someone knocked into him. He then, in turn, ended up not only sitting back down (oh no!) but bumping into her too. See, Nate knew that Nina and Lyndsy Hastings were twins, he just uh, didn’t know who was who. Honestly, it just seemed awkward to ask now, you know? So he just never had which was why he tried his best to avoid situations like these ] I am so sorry. I didn’t mean- There was someone who bumped me and then I bumped…you and uh, you were there. You know what happened.

[After making sure nothings spilled on her dress and brushing her curls from her face, she gives him an appraising eye and laughs] Baby Archibald, you almost ended up in my lap, can you imagine? This thing is ninety percent silk, I would’ve had to pour my drink over you if you wrinkled it.

But no hard feelings! You didn’t, so we’re all good.

A new opportunity? Please don’t lecture me right now, I’m too pretty to crease my foundation with a sad face. Also you’ve been standing there and you haven’t told me how nice I look, which was really what I was objecting to. [Waves a hand and rolls her eyes with a smile] I guess I’ll let you sit here if you fix that right now. Uh, old guy with a check? Ohhh, you mean the suit guy from the Pillsbury Clearing house? Your references are so 70′s.

Baby, please. Look up from your compact every now and again so you can recognise just who you’re in the presence of, honestly. [ Ironically enough, she had barely taken her eyes off her phone as she said all this. Still nothing from the other Gigi… Hm. She looked up then ] There’s two of you, right?

Gasp, am I really in the presence of the Georgina Sparks? Just give me a minute, I have to make sure my make-up is just right before I say hi, or kiss the ring, or whatever. Obviously an icon like yourself can sit here, I thought you were a rando. Mhhm, my sister Nina’s around here somewhere. She looks like me, but nicer, I guess? I’ve never been able to figure out how people tell us apart honestly.

“Please don’t, if you stick around too long, my hair might start to smell like your perfume, and that totally clashes with my signature scent.”

Cami looks at the stranger. “Don’t worry, she’s not worth it.”

It starts with a fake gasp, before her brain catches up with her mouth and the pretend offense turns to very real shame. She’s not used to feeling guilty--she’s Lyndsy Hastings, her very existence is excuse enough to whatever she wants--and she doesn’t wear it well. “I--hey, Cami. Camille. Of course you’re here.” Why wouldn’t she be? Her mother was throwing this event, wasn’t she? And, if Lyndsy were completely honest with herself, which she rarely was, she’d kind of hoped to run into Camille. Talk about self-destructive.

She threw on a little charm, just enough that she didn’t seem totally shaken, and gave a flirty smile. “You look nice.”
