I don’t really exist — there are only thousands of mirrors that reflect me. With every new acquaintance, the population of ghosts that look like me grows. They live somewhere, they multiply somewhere. But I don’t exist.

Как же я могу пребывать в себе и одновременно являться зрителем своей жизни? Слова слетают с моих уст без моего участия: они просто произносятся, и порой я волнуюсь, заикаясь или бормоча невнятно. Руки и ноги словно чужие, как же мне обуздать их? Время для меня лишено смысла: тысяча лет может уместиться в час, а мгновение растянуться на дни. Воспоминания о прошлом — все равно что рассматривать фотографии чужой жизни. Самые дорогие воспоминания потускнели — сны кажутся более реальными, чем жизнь наяву.

My thoughts are detached from my body, as if my mind wanders in one realm while my physical shell lives in another. I observe myself as if watching a film: my actions play out like scenes in a play. How can I dwell within myself and simultaneously be a spectator of my own life? Words leave my lips without my involvement — they simply get spoken, and at times I grow anxious, stammering or muttering incoherently. My arms and legs feel like someone else’s — how can I bring them under control? Time holds no meaning for me: a thousand years can fit into an hour, and a moment can stretch out over days. Memories of the past are like looking at photographs from someone else’s life. My most cherished memories have grown dim — dreams seem more real than waking life.

Who am I? Where do I come from? Where will my wanderings finally end? Once I believed I had the answers to these questions, but now I realize they were merely illusory shadows. We all glide through life as if in a dream, deceived by our own illusion of purpose and meaning. But I have died, and with this silent state has come a strange union with the cold, emotionless night that lasts endlessly. I am ready to move on, but I always reflect on those who departed voluntarily — for I am already dead. When I was still young, I was haunted by fleeting moments of awe and terror at the thought of the insignificance of my existence, of the infinity of time and space, of the proportion between my life and the eternity of what will come after it. Do we live, or is it all just a dream that never existed?

The anxiety concerns not simply an absence of light, as if the night occluded vision, and that alone. Rather, the night, in its omnipotent embrace, cocoons me in an all-encompassing totality. Through penetrating my flesh, the night becomes me, as I become the night, effectively annihilating my personal identity through rupturing all spaces of perspective, and thus forcing a collusion between the remains of identity and the night, which now subsumes that trace into its zone of darkness. This collapse of identity gains special prominence in the home at night. What is revealed in this darkness, paradoxically, is the transparency of the home as a formless space, no longer conditioned by the memories and values ascribed to it retroactively.

The window of your home affords you a glimpse of an alien world. For you, the frame to the outside world serves less to connect you with that world and more to fortify your distance from it. In and through the window you observe another world taking place. If there is a rapport between you and this world, then it is only a visual one, vulnerable at all times to alienation and anxiety. You know your place in the cosmos. It centres at all times on the intersection between your home and the existence that takes place outside of that space. Dare you move beyond the home to find yourself in the world of contingency and chance, then almost immediately you are overwhelmed with regret. For you know that unlike the outside, your home maintains your presence in the world, securing you within a boundary line, which you have no reason to transgress.

I am an extremely introverted person who loves solitude. Traveling on ordinary public transport is a real ordeal for me; such an experience oppresses me.
