When we talk about the soft censorship of taking books out of libraries, off reading lists, out of classrooms, we need to shift the focus of that conversation from “protecting the readers” to empowering them. We need to teach kids to think for themselves. We need to expect them to think for themselves and then we need to be a lot more willing to trust them to think for themselves.

#removing books #especially from libraries #feels like gaslighting people about history #there's so much talk about what's toxic or problematic #as if a person's individual beliefs #on what subjects and perspectives #individuals or groups #think belong in those categories #should dictate what REALITY children #and society at large is exposed to awareness of #I mean.... to a POINT with small children especially I get it #but there's a real danger #in just pretending toxic things #aren't out there #that's practically grooming them #it's definitely setting them up to be blindsided #society has a tremendous problem with BALANCE #like clearly a school library's shelves #shouldn't look like the shelves #of an 'adult' bookstore #or whatever the current equivalent is #but it also shouldn't only have Bambi and Dumbo #if you catch my drift #school is supposed to give kids #knowledge of how the world works #and preparation for living their life in it #in the name of protecting them #it feels like all the soft censorship #is hobbling them blinding them #and setting them up to be victims

Humans would rather take shelter in their insecurity and act insensitive towards the people who care for them in the name of being broken than confronting it to become a better person. They always go to the easy way which is suffering, blaming oneself, blaming others, choosing to be cold and lonely and getting comfortable in doing so.
