“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
—Nelson Mandela
Today I am rocking my “Be A Good Human” T-shirt from IG: OnlyHuman
This shirt is a constant reminder to myself to step outside of my little bubble more often and acknowledge Those around me. To me, being a good human is simply saying “Hi”, “How are you?”, “Have a good day” or “You look Amazing!”
You never know what the next person is feeling, and these subtle acts of kindness can serve as a reminder to those people that they are not invisible and that they matter. By simply speaking to someone, you are aiding in the battle against low self esteem, loneliness, depression and even suicide!
My challenge to you is to speak to a stranger. Say hi to someone you don’t talk to as often. Buy someone standing in the same Starbucks line as you a cup of coffee. The reward is Priceless.
Forehead kisses..... Not just any kinda forehead kiss . But the kiss that comes while bombs are exploding in your life, the ground beneath your feet is shaking and the world around you is falling apart despite your best efforts to hold it all together.
I hate forehead kisses... The one that comes when your load is so heavy, your knees are on the brink of buckling in anguish, and you’re just about to throw in the towel. Then, it happens.
Your warm, soft lips colliding with that of my skin causes everything to stop...
In that moment a stillness is created uninterrupted by the sounds of turmoil in my life. A peace blankets my mind and the time I would spend worrying is replaced with time basking, gripping, clenching to a moment I want to last forever.
Forehead kisses. The act of unearthing rare occurrences of beauty and vulnerability.
What will you do with that moment?
Who I am
Part l
For the longest time I struggled with self image. Who I was and who I hoped to be. “Why is my skin so dark? Why are my coils so tight?” are the questions I would ask myself. Why if I spoke slang, the non blacks would see me as ghetto and if I displayed my Intelligence my own people would see me as a wanna be, or simply “not black enough.’
Always feeling pressured to tailor myself according to my surroundings created a sense of inadequacy in whatever environment I found myself in. I was imprisoned in my mind by who I was or who I wasn’t and what the world’s expectations were of me.
It took some time for me to realize that this world thrives off of comfortability. Well, at least the people in it thinks it does. Anything that goes outside of the realm of what people are accustomed to makes them uncomfortable. Anything that they are unfamiliar with is rejected. Anything that is peculiar is looked down on. I made them uncomfortable because..... I was different.
After reflecting on the last 26 years of my life, I have come to terms with the fact that I have EARNED the stripes to be who ever the hell I want to be! And to be unapologetic about it!
I am Unapologetically BLACK, Unapologetically INTELLIGIENT, and Unapologetically ENTITLED to live my truth, Free from this Narrow Minded Society.
My Black may be Unique or even Strange to some of you. But my Black is still beautiful and most importantly...
my Black is still BLACK.
