The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
๐ฌ Christopher Nolan
MERRY BANEMAS
Bane in The Dark Knight Rises is honestly a lot like the Joker from Batman (1989) - they're both almost perfectly executed villains, but one thing pushes them too far. In the Joker's case, it was him being the one to kill Bruce's parents. For Bane, it's the League of Shadows.
And when I say that, please let me stress that it's not that he's connected to the League of Shadows. That backstory was just fine up to a certain point, which was being trained by Ra's Al Ghul, something that needed to happen so that he could parallel Batman more strongly.
But then......
Alfred and Bruce:
Bane:
Talia:
So practically every time the League of Shadows comes up in the script, it's all wrong. This whole thing of Bane joining the League, being excommunicated, becoming a leader of a mercenary corps, then coming back to the League as its leader alongside his new men doesn't make sense. Why would Ra's al Ghul even get to the point of initiating him into the League if he "saw only a monster"? It'd be far more reasonable for him to prohibit Bane from joining after completing his training - essentially flunking him, because he didn't want him as his heir. It would make the contrast with Bruce even stronger: Bane was willing to be Ra's' heir but Ra's refused, Ra's was willing to make Bruce his heir but Bruce refused. Somehow Nolan forgot that Bruce was NOT an "initiated member of the League of Shadows" like Bane says - executing the farmer was literally said to be his initiation, and Bruce didn't go through with it. He never got as far as full membership, and by that same token, neither should Bane.
And even in the situation the film goes with, why would Bane say things like "I am the League of Shadows, here to fulfill Ra's Al Ghul's destiny!" Why would he give a shit about Ra's Al Ghul when he's the asshole he excommunicated him? He's doing this for Talia Al Ghul, not Ra's! That's why Bane and his mercenary corps should have been kept separate from the League of Shadows, hired by Talia due to her and Bane's past connection. For most of them, it's just a job and not some holy crusade, and for Bane, it's helping out someone he loves...and if he succeeds, then he might actually become a leader of the League of Shadows alongside her, sticking it to Ra's posthumously (a mindset the official novelization ran with.)
Do this, and not only is Bane improved as a character, villain and foil for Bruce/Batman, but the villainous plan of the film makes more sense: the League of Shadows learned from Batman Begins that embedding deep in powerful groups of Gotham and carrying out a secret conspiracy around a scientific weapon wasn't going to work - they needed to adopt the Joker's way of chaotic terrorism, except more controlled. Doing that requires people not in powerful positions, hence Bane and his mercenary corps, as they would be ideal for doing as the Joker did in recruiting violent and crazy criminals (via the revelation of the lie behind the Dent Act) and in dragging regular citizens of Gotham into the madness (via a class warfare strategy), all while his contract with Talia and the League of Shadows meant that the whole thing would be controlled and build to a set goal (the nuke blows up Gotham) rather than the Joker's wild and aimless "just do things" strategy that lacked a specific endgame as to how Gotham is destroyed. Man, if only The Dark Knight Rises had just one more script polish....
If Bane (The Dark Knight Rises) was in Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire, would he consider joining the Nightโs Watch aka take the black?
Yes, voluntarily because he believes in protecting the realm
Yes, to seek redemption since he feels guilty for his past actions
Yes, only to avoid his original punishment (he was arrested for his crimes)
Yes, because his family forced him
Yes, because his king/ruler/leader banished him there
Yes, since he is poor and desperate (joins for refuge and safety)
Yes, to gain rank, influence, and respect he couldnโt at home
Yes, to escape divisive politics and family feuds
Yes, for a unique reason I came up with (share your idea in the comments)
No, he would never voluntarily swear the Nightโs Watch vows
No. Heโs being punished for his actions & he accepts his original punishment.
The halftime show we deserve.

Bane - The Dark Knight Rises (pls add house bolton to the poll!)
If Bane (The Dark Knight Rises) was in Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire, which Great House of Westeros would they be part of or at least the most affiliated with?
House Targaryen
House Stark
House Lannister
House Baratheon
House Greyjoy
House Tully
House Arryn
House Martell
House Tyrell
UNIQUE ANSWER 1: House Bolton
Ways to approach the poll if the character isnโt a royal:
The legacy of Tom Hardy's Bane is so funny.
On the one hand, every single parody of the character has this terrible impression of the voice and have him say stupid or silly things because the voice is inherently funny, and "Baneposting" the dialogue from the plane opening is one of the longer-lasting Internet memes and can still pop up in the odd discussion.
But then there's also this general acceptance that he was a great villain with some killer lines, terrifying physical presence, and a killer performance by Hardy, especially considering the impossible situation of following up Ledger's beloved take on Joker. Just an overall fascinating duality to the legacy of this villain.
