One can so easily find vitriol for Jackie Taylor. She is perceived in life as she is preserved in death. A fantasy, an ideal, a pretty wealthy girl full of talent and potential, the tragedy of her death coming more from who she was and was she could offer than the inherent value of human life. Her legacy is one that would not have been afforded to any of the other girls had they met her same fate, the romanticisation of her life and personhood leading to her memory slotting effortlessly into the perfect dead girl, the only role any girl is allowed to take up space in, the perfect victim. But with romanticisation comes demonisation, with this overblown dehumanising editing of personality to perfection comes envy and resent and bitterness.

It is so easy to hate Jackie, because she is the unattainable standard girls are held to. She is what girls are told they must be, what society at large tells them is valuable, she is someone able to be missed to be remembered. She is all those things, and yet she is still human. She is not an awful horrible relentless bitch, her morality the price paid for this respect and success in societies game. She has her moments of cruelty, yes, but they mostly stem from misplaced frustration and protectiveness or deep seated and well deserved hurt. And she spends more screen time showing care, love, kindness, or protectiveness than she does cruelty. She is not an angel, the 'oh you just want to hate her but she's just too good' girl. She is flawed, she hurts people, she is complex and the narrative shows this to us.

But what can you do with a girl like that? You can't blindly hate her with no further thought, write her off as nothing but a bitch. She is messy and complicated, she provokes messy and complicated feelings. People feel, in a way, that she managed to escape or cheat the shackles of girlhood somehow. She played the game and reaped the reward. They are resentful of the softness and leniency shown to her that would never be afforded to others, resent the relative ease of her life pre-crash with others who they feel more deserving of it.

But Jackie is so terribly unhappy. She is so preoccupied with what other people think, it matters to her, it has to. People will always find ways to survive and this is the way she has, she has found a place for herself in the world where she is held in high regard, where she is loved and valued and missed and praised and envied. She didn't become the societal ideal by accident. This is careful this is curated, this a choice and one with a heavy cost. A hearty reward yes, an enviable one, but one that comes the the weight of standers no one could never hope to maintain.

It is so easy to hate Jackie Taylor, this complex, flawed, ultimately loving and caring girl as you see her reduced to the perfection she sold her happiness and true self to maintain, as you see those around her demonised and dehumanised in different ways. But Jackie's treatment is a form of dehumanisation in and of itself. The person she was wasn't good enough to miss, they had to sand it down, smooth her out, turn her from a hurt young girl who didn't deserve what happened to her, a girl just like the rest of them if only with a more dramatic end, to the perfect victim, the pretty, forever smiling dead girl.

Jackie twisted herself into pieces trying to be what society wanted her to be, what girlhood dictated her place to be. She did so successfully enough to garner resent and anger and vitriol and bitterness, she did so well enough to well earn the consequences. And it still wasn't enough.

Why Jackie deserved better

Other than the obvious of course. If Shauna had left the cabin when Jackie told her to, Jackie would have tried to talk it out, gone outside, helped her out, begged for forgiveness even thought she was not by any means or motives the one who should have had to apologize. Jackie was always such a good friend and genuinely cared about Shauna. Shauna didn't do that for her because unlike Jackie, she never really cared about her as a FRIEND or a PERSON. Did Shauna love Jackie? Absolutely. If her eating Jackie's ear WILLINGLY before they even needed to consume her corpse isn't enough of an indication, check out thebonejunky's "Shauna has killed and eaten Jackie so many times post". But anyway, Jackie distracted her love from Shauna by being with Jeff, by convincing herself that she really cared about Shauna as a friend. No selfish actions occurred, she would just try to express her love for Shauna in the most platonic way possible in order to ignore the deeper bond she truly felt, as most comphets do. Shauna however, made up fake feelings about Jackie's nonexistent cruelty, used any excuse to make her out to be an enemy, to be repelled by her, to fuck her boyfriend as 'revenge' for something Jackie didn't do. Jackie thought it was better to accept what you don't have, and just be there for the part you can, to take what's available, caring for her in the only way she knew she could while respecting Shauna's boundaries. Shauna thought it was better to completely reject what you couldn't have, because hating something you can never attain is better than painfully coveting it. These feelings eventually explode when Jackie makes her realize her cruelty in that fateful argument, and she takes the opportunity to hurt Jackie in the worst way possible; isolation, to punish her. YOU NEED ME. YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOU NEED ME. NO MATTER WHAT I DID. YOU'RE ALONE NOW. YOU NEED ME BECAUSE I NEED YOU. I DON'T REALLY HATE YOU. I ONLY HATE YOU BECAUSE I NEED YOU. YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT. YOU HAVE TO NEED ME IN THE SAME WAY I NEED YOU. This leads to Jackie's death and makes Shauna realize what Jackie knew all along; having some is better than having none. In an effort to not love her, Shauna drove her away, and now she was facing the consequences of her selfish actions. This leads her to want Jackie, so much, so painfully much, that she had to consume Jackie, keep consuming her, reflect her life just to keep her there with her, alive. Shauna needed it all, but she never thought about what Jackie needed, what Jackie wanted, what they could have had if Shauna hadn't ignored her feelings in such an awful method. And now Jackie's haunting her, not willingly, because if Shauna cared about her as a person she would let her go. But Shauna just cared about wanting Jackie, loving her, taking all that she could get even when it was too late, but she never cared about or respected Jackie as her friend, which is why Jackie truly deserved so much better.

something so fucked up about shauna shipman is that she is still so obsessed with jackie taylor that she will recreate that toxic, one-sided jealousy and resentment with her own daughter. our introduction to shauna is a scene of her masturbating in callie's bed while staring at a picture of callie's boyfriend. the immediate parallels are unmistakable, because we also see her teen self fuck jeff later that episode. we both know that it was always more about taking something from jackie than any real love for jeff; now she's lusting after her daughter's underage boyfriend and secretly resenting callie in much the same way she secretly resented jackie and lusted after her boyfriend. she even mistook callie for jackie when she wore the same uniform a few episodes later.

as the first season progressed, we saw a lot of shauna's pretty chilling dislike of her own child. sure, callie's a little shit, but she's also a teen girl with deep-seated mommy issues. shauna is a woman in her 40s acting like the catty mean girl she never had the courage to be in high school. she talks shit about how much she doesn't like callie, she relishes in holding one over on her, she shows off the affair she's having with a hot younger man, she threatens callie's future, she manipulates her, and so on and so forth. she treats callie like she might have treated jackie, if the power dynamic were reversed.

and what's really heartbreaking is that callie, much like jackie, had no idea about this deep-seated jealousy and resentment. neither of them have the callousness nor the mean streak that shauna does. for jackie, shauna always mattered most; and we see how callie blooms under the attention and approval her mother gives her when she helps cover up her crimes in season two.

then shauna had the goat breakdown, and i realized that this is the closest thing to love she can give callie. she can't love her daughter the way she loved wilderness baby, can't open herself up to that kind of pain again. but she also can't help but love her child, so she recreated the only other comparable form of love she'd ever felt: her love for jackie, which is much more complicated and messy and cruel than a mother's love for her child.

If anyone asks me why i hate Shauna i have plenty of reasons. But just because i hate here does not mean i do not feel sympathy for her, i cried both times i watched her loose Jackie and her baby, but again neither of those excuses gave her the right to do what she did and remember the whole point of the show is that when these people go into the wilderness it strip them down to who they really are at the core. Shauna was a bad person even before she was stranded in the wilderness, she was hooking up with her best friends boyfriend. And when confronted about it somehow turned it all around on her best friend who wasn't even upset about Jeff but upset that Shauna a girl she loved was so willing to betray her like that. Not to mention how everyone treated her with kindness and was gentle with her out in the wilderness yet she repays them by keeping them in hell where there all suffering because she is a person that likes control. Shauna is a bad person and was from the start the wilderness just brought it out in her more. But that doesn't mean she didn't go through it a lot and that doesn't mean she deserved it either. Yet people go around saying she's allowed to have these hunts and force these girls to stay in the wilderness and do what she did to Mari because of it? Look at Travis, that poor boy's father died out there, then these girls SA'd him and tried to kill him and then killed his brother and forced him to eat him. And honestly the boy just minded his own business. Shauna is a narcissist like there's actual evidence of it no doubt, but she is an incredibly well written and tragic character and Sophie does and amazing job portraying her but that doesn't mean i can't hate her character you know for being a selfish asshole that doesn't value other peoples lives.
