hiatus update!
hey guys! I’m so sorry to be making yet another ooc post, but things have been so crazy lately that I’ve had hardly any time to myself to sit down and write. things are going full speed ahead with the cafe -- if I have to fill in one more legal form I think I may scream! but it’s all exciting stuff and I’m starting to get very excited/hella nervous now.
this next week is going to be very busy as it’s my 30th birthday on the 5th november (remember, remember!). we’re going to manchester for a night on the 3rd, and general seeing family/friends over the coming week. I also have the feeling my husband is planning me a surprise party... I’m not certain, but a few things have made me go hmmmm these last couple of days, so I’ll keep you all posted!
due to the craziness, I’m putting beric on a short hiatus until Monday 6th november. that should give me plenty of time to comfortably ease back into writing once things settle down. I really am sorry for keeping people waiting -- I miss being here so much!
happy halloween! have a great week!

one more nightshift to go, ugh. sorry for the slow replies, graveyard shifts drain me!
on a related note, I’m handing my notice of resignation in tomorrow morning. I’m actually really sad; I’ve worked for the nhs (critical care specifically) for the last ten years. I learned so much and met some truly wonderful people, and despite how much I’ve grumbled about it lately, I will miss it. my husband and I have bought a small cafe in my town, and I’m taking over in december. terrifying, but so so exciting! I’ve wanted my own little business since I was a teenager... can’t believe it’s finally happening!
anywho, have a nice night, guys — I’ll catch you tomorrow!
I highly recommend you follow the person I reblogged this from.

I hope you have a great day <3

aww, thanks, cute anon! right back at you♥
Regarding OCs: Treat them kindly.
First of all, we all started somewhere and belittling or berating someone’s creativity is bullshit and just plain cruel. I get that there are some OCs you don’t jive with and that’s cool, I’m selective just like everyone else, but that doesn’t give you or anyone else the right to talk shit about them. Remember those “embarrassing” times where you were a one-liner only OC that was probably something “generic” or “cliche” or even a “Gary/Mary-sue”? Yeah, Pepperidge farm remembers that shit honey. No one starts off with some immaculate and elaborate character design, plain and simple.
Instead of being rude or cruel, its better to offer advice as a “veteran” of writing. Give them tips to help them improve rather than tearing them down and making them feel bad or making them feel like they shouldn’t even try. Remember that one person when you were younger that you looked up to because holy shit their writing and style was amazing and you felt so happy just getting to read it? Or that person that wrote with you for the first time? Or maybe your friend that you started off with in general? Having those moments are imperative to a writer’s growth and if you get to be that person they look up to or the person that gave them a little advice is friggin’ great okay? It is an amazing thing and you could literally be helping them become the next nation wide known creator.
But you’d never know if they never had the aspiration or hope to become that if you just shoved their face in the ground.
Canon characters are someone’s OCs. These characters are created by someone, became big hits, and are now written by others because we enjoy them so much. But never forget that they are the creator’s original character.
So be kind. You don’t have to like someone’s OC, you don’t have to even interact with them or anything at all, they might not be your cup of tea. But that doesn’t give you the right to be a dick. Period.
N A T A E L Y A
Nataelya didn’t miss the way he first looked at her as if something occurred to him before he got to his feet a moment later, prompting her to wait. Her gaze followed him to where he started rummaging in some supplies a short distance away, and then flickered to the knife he had left where he had sat.
Out of over-confidence, a show of trust, or stupidity was up for debate, but what her gut feeling told her that the show of trust seemed most likely. She had trusted them to accompany them into their camp after all. And the temptation was there, doubtlessly, the impulse to take the knife, but rationality made her stay where she was, going back to calmly watching him.
She still had a knife. And a second wasn’t going to help her more than that, should anyone here have intentions less than honorable. Not to mention that he’d notice, of course, if his knife was suddenly gone.
When Dondarrion returned, it was with a sling as well as some answers she had sought, and at least a few pieces of the puzzle were starting to slide into place. Of course they only brought up new ones, but before asking them, Nataelya gave him a nod, her eyes silently grateful as she looked back at him.
“Sounds like it would be an improvement on both ends.” She sat up a little straighter and allowed him to step close and slip the sling over her head and around her arm, doing so with surprisingly deft fingers.
“What did Catelyn Stark do, to warrant an attack like this?”
beric paused at the question, his gaze sweeping nataelya’s face. had she not heard of the lady stark’s recent actions, an act of vengeance on behalf of her crippled son? weeks of hard travel was enough to isolate a person from news of the world, he reminded himself -- it was only due to their scouts and the gossip of smallfolk that the brotherhood managed to keep one ear to the ground at all.
“it seems lady stark has taken tyrion lannister as her prisoner,” beric explained, fixing the sling in place with practised hands before sitting back. “nothing he doesn’t deserve, if the rumours of his involvement in her son’s accident are proven true, yet her behaviour prompted tywin lannister into adverse action. the mountain slaughtered an entire village for their loyalty to house tully.”
the mention of the mountain’s name was enough to pass a shadow over beric’s face, the memory of clegane’s lance piercing his chest one he hadn’t yet lost to the abyss. he could still see it, the triumph in the brute’s eyes, hear his roar as he had kicked beric fiercely in the chest to dislodge the weapon from his body. another swing to take his head would have been a mercy, yet clegane had left him to die there in the dirt. he had heard of the brutality inflicted upon the villagers days before their mission began, innocent men, women and children cut down in cold blood. catelyn stark would bear the guilt more freely than tywin lannister ever would.
a brother approached them with wooden flagons of ale, beric accepting his own with a short nod of thanks. the attack at mummer’s ford had killed a third of his assigned men, though food was still rationed accordingly. the smallfolk were happy to trade crops and ales for manual work, and thus far, there had been little problems with sharing.
question for question, beric continued to prepare their meal as he asked, “where will you go, once you’ve fully healed?”

“ you can repay me by resting to aid your full recovery, ” rina said somewhat firmly again. she had a no-nonsense attitude at these times. she knew when she knew best. she paused, this time a little uncertain, her eyes shifting in a way in which she wasn’t sure but was suddenly excited.
“ and you can let me come with you when you leave. ” preparing to explain herself, she leaned in just ever so slightly towards him. “ it isn’t a matter of me not being allowed to leave. we are all free to do as we like here. but there is something… the boats are being used by our clan of wanderers, searching for new knowledge across the lands. so we shall have to take the route through the forest.”
her eyes shone in the gentle candlelight, deep brown seeming to be the centre of the pull in her soft face. she was that of a child in her eyes, flickering quickly from an old soul beforehand. like some kind of magical being she changed.
“ the forest used to be home to a rich family. they built a retreat and others from far away came to gorge themselves on whatever they sold. our people, workers, started to go missing –– one by one. and then, so did the customers. we banned the family from our land but their structure still steams. there have been recounts of awful things living in those woods. things that stop anyone from going in there ––– but i know something to keep them at bay. a song. ”
she was persistent, he’d give her that much. beric reluctantly dropped to one elbow in the barest semblance of rest, longing to push himself from the bed and study the trinkets on the walls, perhaps ask for another demonstration of those violet flames. rest would do him little good --- he hadn’t slept in months now, each descent into darkness robbing him of such trivial human needs. a clockwork soldier, more machine than man. he had no doubt rina would believe him --- a follower of r’hllor or not, something of her whispered of ancient magics --- but he would not burden her with his story when her own was so intriguing.
her second request caught him off-guard, beric’s brow furrowed in confusion. she wished to come with him to westeros? for what purpose? rina’s eyes caught the candlelight, the low cadence of her voice drawing his full attention as thought caught by the chin and held there, unable to look away.
a forest, missing workers, unknown dangers hiding amongst the trees. beric struggled to understand, rina’s words more haunting than a child’s tale. what kind of awful things did she mean, exactly? a slow shiver ran the length of his spine, thoughts of monsters lifting the hairs at the back of his neck.
“a song?” beric repeated, voice dropped to a tone that matched rina’s own. “what kind of a song?”

It was too soon to be in the desolate waste of the lands beyond the Wall; his nights still haunted by the horrors he had seen and his mind still fragile after all he had endured with death and resurrection. Still, there was some solace to be found in the familiar, so Jon made the best of it, hiding his fragility behind a grim, determined stance, being resolute in the face of the unknown, He took each step of their journey as though he was certain of their path, crunching snow beneath his boots as he stalked onwards.
Occasionally he stopped to talk with one of the others in the company. He’d talk to Tormund about the directions, discuss lives with Gendry or check how others were faring in the plummeting temperatures. Mostly, however, he kept silent, conserving his energy for the task ahead.
He had left the others building the camp to instead take in their surroundings, preferring to take a moment alone away from the other men to instead feel the weight of his burdens, crushing his chest for a moment.
At the sound of Beric’s voice, he forced away the weight of his burden, concealing it from view, and instead offering the other man a small, tight smile. “Aye, I will eat in time. Let the others take their share first,” he answered, his nature compelling him to ensure the men were fed before he took his own portion. “I have no intention of becoming a wight. You have no need to worry for me.” His words were passed on as a gentle reassurance, while his hand clapped down upon Beric’s shoulder.
the lad’s apparent confidence did little to fool him; beric had worn the face of false cheer enough to recognise the mask when he saw it. he nodded genially, jon’s hand on his shoulder some small comfort.
“aye, true enough --- but that doesn’t mean I won’t.”
beric had reserved judgement upon meeting the fabled king in the north, unsure of exactly what to expect. in all honesty, he’d been rather cynical of the boy --- the brotherhood had watched such kings come and go over the years, their reigns fleeting and fuelled by battle. joffrey baratheon, robert’s brothers renly and stannis, and even jon’s own kin, robb stark; they had each proclaimed themselves king, and each died for the title. beric could count on one hand the number of kings and queens who had cared for more than their own selfish vie for power, trampling the smallfolk of westeros in their wake. what made jon snow any different?
the very fact that they were standing side by side in that moment answered his question. a king could have sent any man to his death beyond the wall, could have chosen to focus his armies on the meaningless war for a throne rather than look toward the true danger stalking them. jon was a shield, a sword, a good heart. the lord of light had deemed him worthy of a second life; he was meant for something greater than thrones.
azor ahai, a voice whispered in beric’s mind. the champion reborn.
turning his attention toward the sprawling view of the tundra, beric tucked his hands beneath his arms and let free a soft, rare sigh. it crystallised in the chilled air, silver in the moonlight.
“I understand this isn’t your first time venturing north of the wall?”

My Opinion on;
Character in general: oh man, I love me some good, fleshed-out OCs, and meryll is all kinds of awesome! I especially like that you went with an usual choice of house, taking a name as universally disliked as the frey’s and making a character you can’t help but fall in love with. How they play them: beautifully! a lot of thought and effort has clearly been poured into meryll, and she fits the world so easily that when I first took a peek at her page, I thought she was a canon character from the books! The Mun: really fun to talk to!
Do I:
RP with them: not yet, but there’s something in the works!Want to RP with them: hell yes!
