I started this project with the idea of using the Disney Princess aesthetic as an irony to highlight how awesome Tamora Pierce’s heroes are. Halfway through I realised I wasn’t exactly sure WHAT I was saying anymore. Disney’s great. Tamora Pierce is great.

Though obviously constrained somewhat by the Disney aesthetic, I tried to have the dresses also reflect their wearers character a little: for more details on my choices about age and costumes etc, see their individual posts.

As for the hordes of awesome Tortallverse women I HAVEN’T depicted, they’re going to have to wait for another time. Getting nine of these done was work enough. (P.S I love Emelan-verse just as much as Tortall-verse in case there’s any doubt).

The young princess tilted her head to the side, long cascades of blonde hair bouncing off of her shoulder as she offered the stranger a sympathetic glance. She could always take her back to the royal castle and her fiancé could have dealt with assisting her help in finding her companion.

“I’m afraid I have not,” She replied as she glanced upwards and looked to the skies. “But, I could perhaps offer some help—-“ Soon enough the mermaid had outstretched her arm and called upon the kestrel to join her down by the horse that was lazily grazing. “A man riding a chestnut brown horse, have you seen any from your view in the skies?”

Gracie’s talons tightened against the fabric that enforced Arista’s arm as she looked between the two women with her dark eyes. I’m afraid not, Your Highness. The princess pursed her lips as she then looked towards the stranger. “I’m sorry it seems we haven’t seen him.” She commanded the kestrel to fly over the surroundings and have a look for the man – a bird’s eye view was perhaps all they needed. Lifting her wings and releasing the fabric of her mistress’ dress the bird flapped and took to the sky with a caw. The bird flew ahead and Arista made her way towards the redhead. “We’re-” She turned her attention and glanced over her horse to show who she meant, “Heading back to the castle – you’re welcome to join us. Gracie will lead your man to the castle if she finds him.”

"I had thought as much in all honesty," Alanna admitted with a sigh. If Coram was close by then he would have been shouting at her for leaving his side. Her old man servant seemed to forget that she was very capable of defending herself. Then again, she wouldn't have put it past George to tell Coram to protect her. Coram would most likely listen to him as Coram had grown close to George's cousin in the recent months.

She brought herself out of her inner thoughts when the bird of prey landed on the girl's arm. She could understand how such a bird could prove to be useful but she didn't understand how in her situation. Maybe if the bird was well trained it could give them a hint if they were to follow it but she didn't wish to be such a bother to the girl. Seeing the bird, Faithful lifted himself out of the cup that hung Moonlight's horn and climbed onto Alanna's shoulder. He peered curiously at the bird as he bobbing his head a little to get a better view of it. But when the bird spoke, he stopped his head bobbing in favor of turning his ears towards the bird. Alanna on the other hand was shocked and stared at the bird with wide eyes. Was that bird a gift to the girl from the gods? It was the only thing that made sense to her as she always believed Faithful was such a creature.

"By the Goddess," she murmured but stopped herself from saying anything more as the girl apologized to her. "That's...Quite alright. He can take care of himself just fine. I just believe he's worrying about me as he normally does." Faithful got more comfortable on her shoulder as she stood her ground and listened to what the blonde said next. A grateful smile managed to make its way onto her lips at the offer for some shelter. "I will gladly return to your castle with you and for your most gracious offer I am in your debt."

              She looked at the dagger with a vestal wonder, fingers ungainly touching the rusty object, emerald orbs looking at the woman, dazed, unable to utter a word. The only question that formed in her head was — why? And it didn’t take her long until it occurred to her that perhaps this woman knew more than the Princess herself.                           [ If she was a foe,                           If she meant the Princess harm,                           she could have just as easily                           ran this dagger through                           her chest. ]              Finally, with the courage of innocence and with her heart in her mouth, she asked the question that had troubled her upon seeing the woman and the little object she carried with her.                                                               ❝Why?❞

Alanna watched the girl as the younger handled the dagger. It might not have been the prettiest thing but she was certain the blade could still draw blood. Her violet eyes looked at the blade for a moment, only to make sure the girl didn't accidentally hurt herself, before focusing back on her. She was young and it didn't take the knight another thought to know she was of noble birth. It just made her intent hold even more weight in her opinion.

The question was innocent, she could hear it within the girl's voice, and she couldn't hold back the smile that appeared on her face when she heard it. "Because," the lady knight said as she took a step closer to the young noble, "even a woman should know how to defend themselves. I was no older if not younger than you when I learned to handle my first blade. Being able to handle one yourself might prove to be useful."

"That’s the best way to travel, I think," she says with a nod. And it’s not a surprise, either, considering Alan’s introduction. "—where’s Trebond?" she asks curiously.

Out of all the places Sarah has been travelling—and she’s been coast to coast several times now—she has found that the lands west of the Mississippi, and especially those near the Rockies, are both lovelier and thicker with strange creatures than the more densely populated east. If this is Alan’s first time seeing the southwest—oh, this is going to be fun.

She cheers a little when he agrees to come along. “They’re—I think they’re a Russian creature, originally, actually—they look like huge owls, mostly, except the heads, and they sing beautifully and sort of turn your brain to mush. Only guys, though. And they ensnare people and just sort of lead them around entranced ‘till they drop down dead, or sometimes lead them off a cliff.”

She laughs out loud at Faithful’s reaction to the comment. “Oh, that’s all right, I’ve got some in the car. Or fluffy earmuffs, if you’d rather,” she says with a grin.

"It might be it is also fairly annoying." Mostly when she knew she should be back at the palace waiting on Jon as his squire. She held back the look of her surprise that wanted to come onto her face when she was asked where Trebond was. She hadn't heard of it before? Even people in Corus knew about her father's fief. "It's in northern Tortall, right at the foot of the mountains." Maybe she truly wasn't in Tortall anymore...

Hearing the word Russian just confirmed her suspicions. This was just grand. She was magicked away to Mithros knows where and she had no way to get back. Now she didn't have only Jon to worry about but George. Alanna didn't want to know how many of George's men would begin to follow her because the King of Thieves lost track of her for a few days. That was even if George would allow her to go off on her own again, which could cause even more problems.

Realizing that Sarah was speaking to her, she focused back on their conversation and nodded her head to show that she was in fact listening. The creatures that she had been talking about before didn't sound like anything that they had back in Tortall. But they sounded terrible and she glad that she wasn't actually male and just pretending to be one. "I see," she said as she tried to figure out why the ear plugs would be helpful. "So as long as you don't hear their song it won't affect you?" She shot a glare at Faithful but turned her violet gaze back to Sarah. "I would appreciate that thank you. I don't think Faithful wishes to go falling to his death."

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing if your ask got eaten if you sent it without asking the person. But if you'll know if it happens to you (on the receiving end) by noticing you got a notification but no message appears. Thankfully this doesn't exactly happen all that often. Tumblr will probably do it in random spurts and most of the time it'll happen if you're sending message after message to a person.
