“Petunia would love it, and Vernon would definitely understand and get it at the first go.” It wasn’t the kindest to poke fun, she knew, but seeing her sister with the man was nothing short of laughable in her mind. The wedding had been a surprise to them all, but, Petunia had always said she wanted ordinary. Vernon was certainly that. “Well, I’m happy to have them,” she gave James a quick peck on the cheek, still grinning from ear to ear. “Have you been enjoying the festival?”

It was nice that Lily was able to joke about Petunia and Vernon; James had been a little worried that it would be a sore spot, but hopefully it wouldn’t be. “As long as you’re happy, then I’m happy,” he said with a grin. “And the festival is amazing, as always. I regret that we have to get back to school in a couple of days but all good things must come to an end.”

“it’s this essay i have to write for transfigurations.” she said, looking at the book. “it’s not like it’s going to be hard it’s just so long and honestly what does writing an essay prove? let me do the spells and prove i’m good with the magic. you would think the theoretical stuff would be saved for the baby years.” 

Transfiguration had always been one of James’s better subjects and even writing essays had never been a problem. “Yeah,” he said thoughtfully, although he wasn’t entirely sure he agreed. Younger James would be horrified by that admission, but he thought that proving that the older students had a grasp of the theoretical side of magic was probably smart. Not that he would admit as much. “It’s a lot better when we can just demonstrate what we know, because then you get that one person who doesn’t know it and there’s the chance of an explosion.”

“i’ve seen better.” she teased. “the hufflepuff captain might have you beat.” she said, laughing. “but i do love a good competition.” she said. that was what made quidditch fun, the thrill of not knowing if the team would win or not. “that sounds so fun. i wish my summer could have been that great. mine was just stupid pureblood stuff. no time for fun.”

James clutched at his chest and staggered back a couple of steps. “You wound me!” Grinning once more, he ran a hand through his hair and grimaced as Ophelia continued. He and his family did go to some pureblood events - not as many now that Sirius lived with them, and it had never been a lot anyway. But he knew he was lucky because his parents didn’t buy into the pureblood nonsense. “Well, that sounds awful but at least you’re back at Hogwarts now! Much less stupid pureblood stuff to attend now, and plenty of time for fun.”

After being asked by Ophelia, Peter was now going mad thinking of the possibilities. He’d started going on a wild goose hunt, scouring every book he could get his hands on for an answer until he spotted the Professor, the one that SURELY had to have an answer.  “But, you can transfigure into a cat, no? So, surely the thought has crossed your mind, or concern even! I mean, what if you were to birth kittens in the middle of class?” Peter started rambling off to Professor McGonagall who wore a stern and concerned look on her face. “I’m just saying, if a dog animagi can birth puppies, it’d only make sense for you to be able to birth kittens, right? I mean…” 

This was a trainwreck. But James still stopped, hesitating a short distance away before he moved to join Peter - half curious about the answer, and half ready to intervene for when McGonagall invariably got tired of the conversation. He also needed to know why Peter was so curious about this - were there . . . little rat babies . . . No, that couldn’t be it. Surely it was just curiosity. But maybe he’d better intervene before things got too awkward. “All right, mate, surely we should let the professor get back to her work, don’t you think?”

when: september 5th, 1980 where: the great hall

the year was already off to a rocky start. only a few days in and dorcas felt like she was up to eyeballs in homework and essays. if she couldn’t make it past week one how was she supposed to last the school year? “i swear the professors are trying to torture me. how am i supposed to get this all done?” she asked, flinging her pile of books and parchment on the table in front of her. 

“That’s clearly their nefarious plan,” James said cheerfully as he looked up from his own books. “Cruel and unusual punishment, writing and reading all of this.” He was unusually relaxed about it all, although he was sure that wouldn’t last very long; school had a way of becoming overwhelming. Pushing his glasses up, he craned his head and tried to read the titles of her books. “What class is tripping you up now?”

“Mm, you should pass that information on to Vernon. Imagine Petunia’s face if he tried that move.” She grinned as he kissed her, and took his outstretched hand into her own. James made her smile, and made her laugh, and with everything circling the world around them, Lily found that she needed that more than ever. “I’m surprised he didn’t get jealous. Though, I’m sure he got quite a few bouquets of his own out of the deal.”

“Oh my god - I’m sure Petunia would love it.” James snorted at just the thought of Lily’s high-strung sister being faced with magic. It would be worth it just to watch her eyes bug out, he thought. Although he wouldn’t do it, of course; he tried not to cause more stress for Lily when he had to deal with her sister. “Oh, of course, I couldn’t practice that on him and not give him the bouquets. He was kept in flowers all summer long. But it’s a little more satisfying to give them to you.”

“Well she seems very lucky to have you,” Gabrielle smiled with the statement. It seemed that the Gryffindor pair had charmed most of the school, and were a good choice to represent the students going into the new year. 

“Peru was more of a business trip than anything. Papa had to go for work, and after enough begging, he brought me with him.” Gabrielle was quite persuasive when she wanted to be, and the trip had been no exception. At James’s expression, she tilted her head to the side a bit, raising a brow. “But Sirius lives with you, non? I would imagine it would be quite effortless to entertain yourself with your best friend around.” She was teasing, and her smile showed it, “And it seems awfully easy to go visit that girlfriend of yours. With flowers!”

“I’m definitely the lucky,” James said, almost as an instinct but he still meant every word. He didn’t really know how he’d gotten lucky enough that Lily would give him so much as a second look, let alone be willing to date him. Business trips over the summer holidays seemed a little bit of a let-down but if Gabrielle enjoyed it, he supposed he couldn’t really say much about it. “Well, even if it was for business, I hope you had an enjoyable time.”

He smothered a laugh at her seeming confusion. “No,” he continued, as sadly as he could manage, “or - he does live with us, but my parents are cruel and separate us. I get to see him once a week on our exercise trips in the garden.” His laughter would not be contained any longer though, and he spoiled the effect by chuckling. “I’m only joking, of course. We keep the house turned upside down all summer, and I get to see Lily as much as I can. My parents like her better than me or Sirius, I think. And all of us lads get together too. No trips abroad, but I still manage to enjoy myself.”

“oh! thank you james!” fi said, taking a moment to catch her breath. maybe it was time for her to call it quits for now, but she knew she’d be back later. “ravenclaw is totally going to win this year. i mean when the captain is as cute and talented as moi.” she said, obviously teasingly. “have a good summer?” she asked. 

“Yeah but have you seen the Gryffindor captain? Charming and handsome too so you have some competition.” He winked at her, although he knew the competition would be tough, as always. He would miss that after Hogwarts - luckily he had plenty of time to enjoy his Quidditch career before he had to give it up. “Oh, always. Sirius and I wreaked havoc - wrought havoc? I’m not sure which is correct. What about you?”

“James!” Lily gave a small shriek as he came beside her. She really should be used to it by now, she supposed. If someone was sneaking up on her it was almost always James, and it really shouldn’t be as startling anymore. 

“James,” she repeated, this time through a fit of giggles as she accepted the flowers. “Thank you, they’re lovely.” Her grin never faded, but she raised a brow at his last statement. “Oh really? How long did it take you to master that one?”

He couldn’t help laughing at her reaction; it was always satisfying to catch her by surprise, and he hadn’t quite grown out of his enjoyment of startling her. Leaning forward, he kissed her cheek. “I’m glad you like them. Are you impressed? I heard that magic tricks are like, a sure-fire way to impress the girls.” Winking, he held his hand out. “Only took me . . . all summer. Sirius kept laughing at me when I practiced on him.”

“Professor Sprout’s blooms will always look magnificent, and Lily will always be pleased if you bring her flowers.” Gabrielle teased. It was almost sickening how sweet the pair was, and she often wondered what exactly James had done to get Lily to agree to go out with him. Still, they were good together. “Well you must not break solemn promises, of course. I am sure you have more than enough people to keep you in check.” 

“My sister was married this summer - I think she and my mother may have bought out every florist in France,” Gabrielle shook her head at the thought, before landing on a smile. “And my father and I went to Peru. What about you? How does a Potter spend his summer?”

“I did learn a couple of things about keeping my girlfriend happy over the years,” James said with a laugh. He still got a little thrill over saying that Lily was his girlfriend; although his dad had confessed to the same feeling when talking about Mum, so maybe it wouldn’t ever go away. “I do try not to break my solemn promises and I mean, Lily will be right there and she usually curtails my worse instincts.”

James could just imagine that any wedding Gabrielle’s family was involved in would be extravagant, so multitudes of flowers seemed fitting. “That sounds really nice. Well - hopefully, if you like your sister’s new husband. And Peru would be great.” His parents hadn’t been much for traveling by the time he was born, but they’d gone on a few trips. Nowhere quite that far though. “Oh, my parents keep me confined,” he said, with a heartbroken confession. “So I entertain myself at home. Nothing as exciting as Peru or weddings, sadly.”

“Next year’s carnival, we’ll play for double-or-nothing, yeah?” Edgar said lightly. He pulled at his jacket, situating it more tightly around his chest. “Good game, though. You’ve got a better aim than I do.” He nodded his head leftwards, where the Three Broomsticks resided, festival-goers milling all around front. “If you need any ideas on where to spend your newfound wealth, I recommend you buy the both of us a butterbeer.”

“It’s a deal,” James said brightly. It was nice to have another year ahead of them, and he was pretty sure they would need the distraction next year as much as they did now. “I did spend a lot of time this summer practicing - throwing things at Sirius’s head, good for target practice. Mum put a stop to that eventually though. But yes. Butterbeer. That seems like the ideal way to spend it.” He started walking, running a hand through his hair absently. “How was your summer?”

Edgar foisted over two sickles, trying not to look too grumbly about losing. “Right then, you won fair and square. Here’s your bet.”

James did his best to smother the delighted grin that threatened to overtake his face. “You can’t win ‘em all, right? I’m sure it’ll go the other way next time.”

ophelia had just won her second quidditch 1x1 game in a row and felt amazing. she’d missed playing quidditch over the break, but her father didnt approve of her practicing over the summer. if she was going to train a team to win this year then she needed to get back into shape. 

“great game!” she said, telling the person who she’d just beat as they left. she turned to the nearest person, grinning. “you here to be my next match or are you here to tell me i need to take a break?” she asked jokingly. 

“Neither, actually. Just wandered by on my way to . . . somewhere else.” James shrugged; he didn’t have any real plans but he also wasn’t looking for a match at the moment. “You were great though. I’ll have my work cut out for me this year.” His ambitions had changed but Quidditch was still one of his favorite things in the world and he was looking forward to the rivalry this year.

Spotting Lily - still at the books, in a move completely unsurprising to anyone who knew her - James jogged the last few steps to arrive at her side. “Boo!” He tapped her on the shoulder and then, with a sleight of hand move he had perfected over the summer, made the flowers pop out in front of her. “Look, I can do magic!”

“Will they lose any of their beauty with it?” Gabrielle asked, before turning to face James. His next remark made her grin, she couldn’t help it, and she shook her head. “I am glad to see the summer and new position haven’t changed you too much, Potter.” Putting her bundle down for a minute, she fully turned to face him, “I believe congratulations are in order.”

“No! They look really good - I think Sprout might have experimented a little with it? I dunno, all I know is that I get to give flowers to Lily and she seems really pleased with them.” A charm to extend the flower’s life but not keeping its beauty seemed a little pointless. “I had to make solemn promises that I would not let this position go to my head, and I intend to keep them,” he added. “And thank you.” It was a little startling even now to think about it, but hopefully he didn’t let anyone down. “Have any exciting summer adventures?”
