The sounds of the Red Room haunt Bucky Barnes.

He remembers the sounds of a lullaby the most. It rattles off the walls of his brain on repeat, and the sounds of that fuckin’ television his handlers would watch drones on, too. He dreads when it goes quiet. 

Worst of all, somewhere amidst it all, he hears the wailing and broken sobs of the girls not fit for induction into the gruesome world of the Widows. Too kind, too gentle.

There are some things you cannot control, and I am at least three of them.

the reason Bucky get's so on edge about the therapist pulling out a notebook is because the moment he showed any signs of resistance toward a handler within the Red Room/Hydra....people pulled out a notebook. The fact that he attempts to dig his heels in but is ultimately cowed is sad, because the moment he shows unwilling she pulls the notebook out like a threat until he behaves and answers her questions and hands over his phone ect. She may not have known what she was doing, but in using the notebook in a ‘ passive aggressive ‘ way, it triggers those reactions in Bucky and it instinctually makes him to fall back on old routines and conditioned responses. He could have denied her access to his phone, he’s a grown man, most of us would have...but he doesn’t.  And there’s a reason for that.

Asking Bucky about his nightmares will indeed be met with complete denial and I am glad the show got that right. This man does not want to talk about his trauma because he believes the horrors and atrocities that he committed are far worse than his own pain.
