Once again stating that we can describe Americans of color’s very real participation in American imperialism without pretending as if there are equal living standards and access to material resources.

Ghettos and reservations have deplorable conditions where the benefits of Americanness are limited, nearly non-existent. Reservations are often places without clean running water and electricity, where the only available water is likely contaminated by uranium mining or oil spills, where the unemployment rate is over 50%, where the few opportunities to support yourself are centered around attracting white tourist money, where basic services are underfunded or don’t exist, and sovereignty doesn’t truly exist because of the United States.

None of that excuses any participation in the United States military. But when we describe the material benefits of imperialism what many American citizens receive in terms of cheap goods and some social services don’t exist on reservations. Those material benefits are going to be more limited to particular individuals and their families because the general wealth of imperialist extraction doesn’t distribute itself into the reservations like it does in other parts of the country, particularly the urban core.

We should be specific as to avoid errors in thought that can become errors in practice, including how we relate to others.

There’s a fair number of similarities to how the United States treats reservations as both extraction sites of natural resources for capitalist development and as dumping grounds for toxins, while tribal governments have limited ability and resources to resist or are totally beholden to the United States and how the United States treats the third world.

they should give bus and train drivers control of the aux so they can blast passengers with whatever music they choose. this would not improve the experience and in fact largely make it worse for everyone but i dont think that should stop them.

My personal experience with being asked this question and then given that line, is that the neurotypical person expected you to feel shame. I have some slightly less anecdotal evidence to back up this anecdotal experience. I took substitute teacher training once, and we were told that the best thing to do with middle schoolers "acting up," was to shame them, to figure out how to draw attention to them and this negative attention in front of their peers would shame them into good behaviour, or at least silence. I raised my hand, having already distinguished myself as the "weirdo" of the group, and said, "Is this the reason I spent a lot of time in the principal's office for truthfully, loudly, and clearly answering questions like, 'would you care to share your thoughts with the class?'" And was told yes, that was a perfect example, but I was the rare case where it backfires.

Since then, I have responded to that type of question with, "Do you want an explanation, or was your intent simply to indicate that I need to feel inferior, right now?" and it does tend to turn the tables a little bit.
