What literature do you like?

I love literature in general, whether it be prose or poetry or plays, and I've always had a taste for the 19th century classics (especially those dark and moody novels); they made me acknowledge the inevitability of pain and suffering. Somewhat. For hundreds of years, writing stories seemed to be the most popular way of conveying all those emotions. But of course, classical novelists are not all about expressing the pain their characters had to endure; they provide insight on the lives of people in the past through their characters. The common theme of pain and suffering in those novels make for better character development, and sometimes even life-changing lessons, and that's the best part.

Sorry if that seemed unrelated. And obvious.

Here are some of my favourite novels:

- Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (my absolute favourite, the ending is so depressingly poetic)

"I have not broken your heart - you have broken it; and in breaking it, you have broken mine." - Heathcliff to Catherine

- Shirley by Charlotte Brontë (seemed slightly dull at first but I eventually learned the hardships that women face in love and marriage back then)

- Middlemarch by George Eliot (women writers are the best)

- Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

- Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

- Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (the original French version is so beautifully written)

- Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo

I could list so much more, and these are just the most popular ones, but my reply is getting more lengthy than it should.

As for the exquisite art of poetry, Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, and Shakespeare wrote the best poems, in my humble opinion.

if you were a novelist, what would you write?

Great question since I'm already planning my novels!

I'd mostly write historical fiction: 19th century Europe; a hint of existentialism and absurdism, rich dandies not knowing what to do with their lives... Perhaps a WWII era tragedy revolving around three brothers who chose to help their country by pursuing the arts, joining the military and conducting scientific research, respectively... Or even a short story about a young girl fleeing her war-torn village in a snowstorm...

I find it interesting that many European classical composers spoke multiple languages.

In general, I am fascinated by European languages, probably because they're so different from what I speak.

Coming from a language (Mandarin Chinese) that does not have tenses, conjugation, articles, gender, learning languages that have all those things and more is quite difficult.

I think it's because many 19th European composers were part of the aristocracy with higher levels of education which allowed them to learn and speak several other European languages. Most of them were fluent in French since French was the lingua franca of Europe at the time, with Paris being one of the main hubs for art and music.

While I agree that the grammar of different European languages can be very difficult, I still find it more impressive when someone is fluent in both a European language (including English) and an Asian one, since they are from completely different language families with different writing systems and little to zero lexical similarity. So bravo to you!

Thanks for the compliment! And yes, that is a good point you have. Additionally, European countries are quite close to each other, so i imagine it is easier to travel between them and for languages to come into contact with one another.

Exactly! Geographic proximity is an important factor. Not to mention how similar the Latin and Germanic languages are to each other, which makes learning them easier.

I read The Great Gatsby recently

You did? What do you think of it?? Honestly one of my favourite books of all time. I actually chose a sentence from the first page as my yearbook quote:

"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

I had a hard time reading and understanding the book. Fitzgerald's writing style is not really for me.

I didn't expect a 12 chapter novel to be so difficult to understand.

But I watched the 2013 movie and I understood the plot better after watching. So I will attempt to read the book again.

That's a great idea! I think I myself watched the movie before I read the book, but that was when the movie just came out and I don't think I was old enough to understand, but I read the book two years ago and the movie now makes much more sense to me.
