To help celebrate my birthday, I’m posting an early birthday gift I got myself a few months back, a commission of one of my favorite OCs, the Tricorn King Týrus Krampus, by one of my oldest and dearest friends in the MLP fandom, @egophiliac.

This OC means a lot to be, because focusing on and thinking about Krampus and his story helped me through some of the darkest years of my life regarding my major depressive disorder, my OCD and my PTSD. Focusing on and thinking about him has helped me understand myself better, what kind of story I want to tell with him, and how I want to show the world what the Krampus means to an Austrian who grew up with the character in the pivotal years of my childhood.

I can’t bring this up without also thanking Egophiliac for this art. Every time she has ever drawn Krampus, it has made my heart grow in love and admiration. I love how she evoked the new Pokemon Solgaleo in these pictures, and how when I look at him I’m also reminded of one of my favorite legendaries, Entei and his role as a father in Pokemon: Spell of the Unown.

Thank you Ego for this fantastic art, and for helping me keep this character and what he means alive in me.

Today is my Birthday

I’m 29 years old. Next year I will be 30. I still live in the same apartment that I rented back in university, still work the same part-time job at the same company that I’ve worked for 8 and a half years. I still haven’t found a job for the degrees I got.

However…

I have survived over 18 years of major depressive disorder. First from being taken out of my home in Austria, then from utter rejection i experienced in the US, then from the break-up of my family, and then from a crisis of identity after graduating from university.

I have survived 18 years of obsessive compulsive disorder with intrusive thoughts. I have survived 10 years of PTSD. I have survived 18 years of anxiety and panic attacks from said intrusive thoughts and PTSD.

All of that in spite of not having any medication, not getting any actual counseling until I became suicidal in 2014 and was sent to counseling by my job. I survived all that for close to 16 years with no counseling and no medication, all on top of the financial hardships that come with living in the Southeast of the United States and not having any safety net.

I survived all that, thanks to the love and support of my mother, my siblings, my friends, and thanks to my own inner strength, which is drawn in no small part from my religious and spiritual faith and walk with God.

I am not a failure. I am a survivor. I have done all that, fought all that, while still every day striving to be a pillar of strength and support to the people I love, the people I care for.

I struggle every day, but I have nothing to be ashamed of. I have made it this far, and I can keep going. But I couldn’t have done it alone. Thank you to all of you who have been a positive of my life, whose positive influence has helped keep me going when I was at my lowest. I would not be here without you, and I thank all of you for your love and support.

It’s been one year since I started this blog. So much has happened and pretty much all of it has been great. I hope the next year will be even better!

Happy New Year Everybody

What a year this has been. As I sit here, writing this a scant few hours before the stroke of midnight and the end of the year, I realize that there is a lot that has changed for me. Not so much concrete, physical things, like my economic or housing situation, but more ephemeral things.

2015 was really the year that I seriously began making progress combating my major depression and my ocd/anxiety. It’s been the year where I’ve taken the time to work on myself, realize who and what kind of people I want to surround myself and be with, and really realize the kind of person I want to be. Or rather, rediscovering who I was and who I wanted to be, before Post College Depression mixed with my pre-existing issues to knock the wind out of my sails during the majority of 2013 and 2014.

It’s been a year where I’ve confronted a lot of the trauma that I’ve gone through over the years, coming to some form of acceptance and more importantly, self-love over it. With the help of my loving family, and of the friends old and new who have stuck by me and encouraged me with love and compassion, I’ve started the process of loving myself again, of accepting my strengths as legitimate things to be proud of, that despite the struggles and the depression, I do have the strength that I need to make it, to be something extraordinary and make a positive difference in the world.

Thank you to everybody who has been with me through this journey of a year. Whether we parted ways at some point, or we met for the first time, or even if we are still going into the new year together, knowing you has helped to enhance my life in ways both big and small, and for that I will always be thankful.

Happy New Year everybody! Let’s make 2016 the year where we finally win! In whatever way winning might mean for us!

So Today’s My Birthday

And overall, I’d have to say that it’s been a very quiet, but also a very relaxing birthday at that. Been getting a lot of necessary cleaning done in my room and here and there in the apartment, took a nice afternoon nap, and am about to get ready for a birthday dinner with my mom and older brother. I’ve gotten calls and well-wishes via text and Facebook from friends and family, which always brings a smile on my face.

Looking at it all, this definitely wasn’t where I thought I’d be at 28, but at the same time, I’ve been making a lot of progress with my personal life and my mental health. I’m starting to make my way out of this depression that set in after I graduated university back in 2013, slowly but surely, and trying to figure out ways on how to move forward with my life, and be the person that I’ve always wished that I could be.

To all those who’ve stuck with me over the years, especially over these last two or three years, your friendship and love is the best birthday gift that I could have asked for. if it hadn’t been for the encouragement, love and support of my friends and family, I don’t know if I’d have made it through quite the same as I have. There’s still a long road ahead of me, but knowing that I have people who care for me behind my back, there to support me when I need it, means the world to me.

Happy Birthday to me, and thank you all for being a part of my life. Whether I’ve known you for a few months or for many years, thank you for the birthday gift of being a part of my life.

As someone who grew up with Krampus in Alpine Austria, I am so happy to see that they got so much of what goes into the character right. Can’t wait to see this when it hits theaters.

Given who the main character of this blog is, I felt it appropriate to share this. (That said though, King Krampus isn’t QUITE like the one shown here. This would possibly be closer to what a Nightmare Krampus would be like. With a bit of Futurama’s Robot Santa thrown in I think.)

How about: Forest of Regret, Týrus-Krampus walking reflectively through the Everfree Forest. Mist and fog whisping away here and there, the clarity of the light of the moon obscured, barely peaking out here and there through the foliage. Shades of blue throughout, to reflect the somber mood of the piece. (Thank you btw if you do this. It's nice of you to offer.)

Absolutely stunning! Týrus-Krampus looks fantastic in this. It actually reminds me a lot of some of the scenes in the animated The Last Unicorn film! Everybody, go take a look at Technomod’s work, they do absolutely stunning art and are worth your patronage!

Sir Terry Pratchett was one of the biggest influences that I had growing up, especially when it came to storytelling and how to treat other people. Mod: I know I'm super late to the party, but once again, AUGH! Thank you again so much Techmod for doing these and for including Krampus as well! I love the excessively bushy eyebrows, and the way his mane seems to flow from his head to make it even more of a beard is a really nice touch. For anybody who hasn't seen this or Techno Wizard's mod's work yet, please give them a look, you'll absolutely love what they have to offer!

Since it's the last day of the year, I figured I'd post two of the last sketches I worked on for this blog before the inevitable holiday rush tore me away like some giant tidal wave of holiday cheer. (Not that I'm complaining mind you, this has been by far one of the best Christmases that I've had in years.)

As for what these two sketches are for, well, they're my attempts at figuring out a stained glass art style that I'd be comfortable with for an extended backstory segment for the Aldheim comic. It's going to take a bit more practice, but I can definitely see this as the start of something fun and interesting.

This has been an interesting year for me, one which I'll probably be reflecting on sometime tomorrow over on my mod blog. Till then though, a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all! May 2015 turn out to be all that we want and hope it to be!

Merry Christmas everybody! Whether it be with friends, family or just by yourself, I sincerely hope it turns out to be everything you hoped it would be.

A really quick headshot doodle I did for the sake of doing it, specifically because it’s close to Christmas and I wanted to revisit my version of “Santa Hooves”,Polaris (otherwise known as North Star).  Folks seemed to like him more than what I originally thought, so I think I may end up making him an actual character that exists in my headcanon. Until then, though, he’s more or less a “tentative” headcanon thing for me; a really fun one. C: So here’s the old fella being himself and just being generally happy. 8D If there’s one thing I REALLY wanted to do but didn’t actually do it in the first sketch I did of him, it was the runes and markings all along his antlers. Even when standing idle and without doing magic, the big guy is basically teeming with it so the runes along his antlers are always faintly glowing a blue color. The antler s themselves are actually an off-white, but uh… yeah. o3o I may end up doing another full-bodied sketch of him. But until then, this little doodle will do. Concept art for King Krampus's reindeer son Sankt Mikolaus (and Celestia and Luna's paternal uncle) totally accepted. Though maybe with a bishop's mitre and robe (and other influences from the original Saint Nicholas) included.
