Alright folks, to celebrate the upcoming release of the Electus / Gateway: Remastered Collection, I'm going to be giving away some physical copies of the books on my social media channels!

We'll start with one copy per social media page (I have tumblr, twitter and instagram, all with the same handle @jrwilsonwriting), but the more entrants we get, the more that number will rise!

So, I don’t normally enjoy jumping in trends, or hashtags, or anything like that. Today’s is actually important though, and something very close to my heart.

Today is #mentalhealthday2018

Two years ago I had a moment where my world just fell apart. One day I was fine, the next the floor just dropped out from under me. Anybody who knows me will (hopefully) tell you that I’m kind, I’m bubbly, I tend to be incredibly loud and you can always feel my presence in a room. That changed. I lost all the joy in my life. I also lost all the sadness. All the anger. All the emotion just seemed to vanish down the drain.

It took me a couple of weeks to finally fridge up the energy to go to the doctors. Inside my mind I knew I had a problem. But I just had no energy to act on it at first. I was diagnosed with depression, and I began seeing a counciller shortly afterwards.

I’m not here to tell you the journey was easy. It required a lot of self reflection. A lot of hard work. A lot of dead ends and frustration. But that in itself was a good sign. Emotion good and bad started seeping back into my life again.

It’s the side of depression that I don’t often see represented (Because it manifests differently in everyone) is the horrific understanding that something that should be getting a reaction wasn’t. Inside my own mind I was screaming that I should be caring about this, but I just couldn’t get the energy too. I didn’t even feel human anymore.

Along the way I also discovered a secondary anxiety diagnosis, and I’m very lucky in the fact that I don’t need medication to deal with it. As my case was mild, in medical terms at least.

To me it didn’t feel mild. It felt like the world had ended.

This isn’t a miraculous post to say I’m cured. I still have depression and anxiety. It still forces it’s way through into my every day like. You can’t cure it as much as you can’t regrow your adult teeth.

However, this IS a miraculous post to tell anybody out there struggling that you can deal with it. That we live in a country where you can get help for free. It’s possible to go down that road.

You can feel human again. You can live.

Research is just detective work without people involved.” His smile reached his eyes this time, as he ambled over to give her a quick hug. “Fancy a coffee? Or something stronger? I’ve lost all track of time, not sure which is more appropriate. You can tell me about your latest cases, take my mind off things.”

“I like that turn of phrase!” Nancy laughed, returning the hug with a friendly squeeze of her own. “It’s still late afternoon for the rest of the world, I could go for a coffee or something like that. I think I saw a cafe on the way here?”

He smiled and pulled on his suit jacket from the nearby rack. "That works, I suppose I should at least pretend to be in line with the rest of the universe. Lead the way, oh fearless leader." He opened the door and gestured for her to go through, trying not to wince as the change in air pressure sent papers scattering in a twister from his desk.
