“Sad isn’t good at all. Okay, is she… is she just a friend, or more?”
Um was more, then not. But still is. Yeah, she’s just her.”
Ted didn’t have an opinion about Regulus. He realized this as he arched an eyebrow up, waiting for the word mudblood to come out. He merely blinked a few times when Regulus switched to using his surname. Usually, Ted was good about listening when people told him to do something, but there was something in the younger student’s tone that made him shake his head. He needed a deep breath before he was able to find the words he was looking for.
“Are you alright?” He asked and took a step backwards, casting a glance up at Regulus’ face. There was something off about him, but Ted couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
Regulus was just a mess of late. He didn’t know how to deal with any of this, if he was honest. Regulus wanted to get out of here and he didn’t care if he was supposed to hurt Ted Tonks, the last thing he wanted to do was hurt someone important to his sister.
“Me, I’m fine..” He then took a deep breath. “You shouldn’t be around me right now. You’ve done wrong things in the eyes of those who hate you. I’m supposed to do something about it. I’m only telling you this because my cousin cares about you.”
“What happened? That step happened, that’s what.” Cas plastered a smile onto his lips as he got up into a standing position.”Thanks, kid.”
“No problem. Good to see that a step takes a Black down and all.”
“Picking flowers for yourself isn’t an easy deal. I would suggest a florist.” Lyra smiled, before she turned to look at who it was that was speaking. “Thinking of getting some for a special someone, Regulus?”
“A florist huh? Yeah, I mean, kind of. I’m not sure if she’ll like them but she’s been sad.”
Rounds ran a lot later than usual, leaving Ted feeling relieved by the time they were done. He was on the way back to the common room when someone bumped into him, knocking the wind out of him as they brushed past. It took a moment for Ted to recollect himself, but he soon straightened up. The Hufflepuff brushed off his robes before crossing his arms over his chest, breathing still unsteady, and getting a good look at the other person.
“Y-You know, you’re not supposed to be out this late,” He grimaced at the unsteady sound of his voice. Ted was older and the head boy. Something as simple as a student out of bed after curfew shouldn’t have been something that left him feeling off. He simply supposed it had to do with being taken surprised and nearly sent falling to the ground.
Regulus was trying to just get away from everyone. He didn’t want to do anything that could be perceived as wrong in anyone’s eyes. He couldn’t disappoint Voldemort, but he didn’t want to be seen as a monster, either. He wasn’t the monster that he was starting to see some people in his family were. He’d come to realize Bellatrix was a monster and he didn’t know how to deal with that. Even though Andromeda had been disowned, she likely still wouldn’t like to hear it. But could he not become as bad as her?
“Being out past curfew is the least of my problem, mu..Tonks. You shouldn’t be near me right now. I’m suppos..just go the other way!”
“I’ll be less grumpy when my fiance is found.”
“They’ve still not found him?”
“Hilarious. Really. Now if you’ve not got something important to say, then please just move along.”
“I realize this is funny from me, but you really should be less grumpy.”
Hadley rested her chin on his shoulder and pressed her eyes closed as she carefully wrapped her arms around him. At his words, her grasp tightened around him and she hid her face into his neck. “I don’t see how it’s going to get better.”
He wrapped his arms tightly around her, trying to make some of it better. “I’m not sure either, but I don’t mind hugging you when you’re sad. You’ll get through it all.”
“Don’t be cheeky, and help your uncle.”
“Well if I must.” He extended a hand. “How’d that happen?”
“I love spring; flowers smell absolutely delightful when they’ve just started to bloom.”
“How do you know the ones to pick, you know, for a female?”
“Uh -are you alright?”
“Don’t I look okay?”
Regulus had been being tested as a death eater more and more, lately. He didn’t know how to deal with it, because the more meetings he sat through, the more times he encountered Lord Voldemort, the more times he was told to do something like hurt someone, the less he felt like a person, or felt okay about it. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He wasn’t supposed to have regrets. It was all supposed to be black and white, but after being forced to do something again last night, he could still smell the blood on his hands, even though he had washed his hands over and over again. He had been given another task this time, too. He was supposed to punish Ted Tonks for his involvement in Andromeda getting disowned
He didn’t want to do any of this. He wanted to be normal, wanted to half a life, didn’t want to be a soldier. Regulus Black was beginning to realize that things were very wrong in his life, and he had no way out. He needed to escape, so that’s what he did. He ran. Bumping into someone, he stumbled. “Um sorry, I didn’t see you.” His eyes then met the person.
Hadley felt the small urge to laugh at his off. Regulus wasn’t much of a hugger but a hug, that sounded wonderful. She nodded quickly before she glanced down at the ground between them.
He nodded, and moved forward to hug her. He could probably count on one hand, the number of times people had hugged him in his life. But, he cared about Hadley. He cared about her a lot. He moved to pull her into his arms. “These sorts of things get better, I hear.”
She crossed her arms defensively as he stepped closer and she looked down. Her lower lip quivered despite how much she tried to keep it stiff before she held up the envelop for him to take. “I guess I’m an orphan now,” she whispered and her voice cracked. “As good as anyway.”
He then looked a bit confused at what she was saying and he took the envelope and bit down on his lip. “Would you like a hug? We don’t do that much in my family but i hear they help a lot.”
“Ah crap – no, I’m fine, it’s all right.”
“Yeah, could have fooled me.”
“I’m fine.” Flicking her hair off her shoulder, her demeanor was completely embittered. “And why do you care. You’re not supposed to care anyway, remember? Who cares if someone I love goes missing, remember? Who cares if someone I love is… gone.” Her voice broke towards the end of her rant and she quickly crossed her arms. “Fine, just fine.”
“No, I’m not supposed to care, Hadley. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t.” He too a step closer to her. “Will you just talk to me and let me do what I can to help? You look like a complete mess right now and I just want to help. I can listen.”
I’m sorry to have to report that your father, Archibald Eugene Prewett…
Hadley didn’t have to read much after that before she quickly folded the crisp parchment paper up and shoved it back into the ministry envelop that it came in. She had already known what the rest of the letter was going to say. She had seen many of them written before– even more so this past year– and she couldn’t bring herself to finish reading hers. She sat very still even though her mind began to race as quickly as her heart pound in her chest. It couldn’t possibly be real. It was just some fowl joke or spoiled piece of meat giving her the delusions of her worst fear. Either way, she didn’t want to believe it. She refused. Completely and stubbornly refused.
Jumping up quickly when she felt someone approach, she sent a steely glared, “what?”
Regulus had gotten assigned a dangerous mission, and he was finding it really bothered him. It was not something that he wanted to do, at all. He wanted to just be a teenager, but he knew that was impossible. He was distracted when he walked and he spotted Hadley in front of him, but she didn’t seem like herself. He stopped to ask her, if she was okay.
“I said, are you okay?”
