Open RP: Housewarming
Becca has spent the past few months renovating and customizing the beautiful little house she’s bought, on the same lake her brother lives on. It’s clean, army-neat and bright, built to feel familiar to someone from the 40s, down to the appliances
She hosts a small housewarming to celebrate, the music playing and the voices making her smile. People have brought friends and significant others, and she’s happily chatting and sharing her home, the first one thats all hers. All the way from the tenements of New York to a modest but lovely home just a few minutes from family
When you arrive, she’s pouring a glass of lemonade in the kitchen, breaking into a grin
Mikey nervously stops and chews his lip.
“Oh, umm, hi Ms Barnes. My momma said you wouldn’t mind me coming and I wanted to help out with Wyatt and Em’s girls….it’s a lovely home.”
Becca smiles warmly at the sight. “No need for the title, Mikey. And I don’t mind at all, I’m always glad to have people.” She opens the door wide for him. “You don’t have to call me aunt or anything, but just Becca is perfectly fine. I’m physically not that much older than you, either”
“Okay, Becca. Thank you.” Mikey nods.
He seems to relax a little.
“Of course,” she smiles. “Feel free to come in, we’ve got loads of food in the dining room”
“Thanks. Um, Beau had to work but he sent Bredele?” He holds out the container.
“Who’s Beau- the fiancé I heard about?” Becca accepts it with a grin. “I like this guy already, this looks amazing”
“That’s him. He loves cooking.”
“Cooking is always a very good use of time,” she winks, slipping the box into a cupboard so he doesn’t have to share it. “You’ve seen nothing”
Mikey suppresses a laugh.
“Absolutely. Especially if you like French food.”
“The worst part of the war wasn’t the battles, it was that when I went to France the restaurants were struggling with rationing,” Becca chuckles. “Someday I’ll be back and doing things properly. With all of the amazing food”
“In the meantime, you could always come for a meal with us.”
“I’d love to,” she smiles. “I’ll have to host you as well”
“That would be nice.”
“So, how’s the move going?”
“Good. Finally got everything from California, just sorting what needs to go into storage. Hopefully taking Leo for some decor and art shopping soon.” Mikey smiles, taking a sip of lemonade.
“I think he’d enjoy that, from what I’ve seen,” Becca smiles. “You should see some of what he’s gotten into. I asked him if he took commissions — I wanted a mantelpiece with some custom carving — and he went and re-did the banisters for free. I still haven’t convinced him to let me pay him so I’m just starting to hand him bits here and there”
“Sounds like Leo. Maybe give the money to Em, she’d either convince him to take it or keep it safe for him.”
He pauses for a moment.
“I like having siblings.”
“That’s smart. Maybe she can invest it or something, I know she learned some about that. Though I don’t trust stocks, and barely banks. Great Depression and all. Wall Street crashing wasn’t fun to watch.”
Becca softens, smiling. “Yeah? I do, too. I mean, my brother is still vaguely annoying at times, but he’s always been my best friend. Steve was his, he was mine, I always loved him so much. And Steve was great too.” She glances over. “It’s nice having people to share life with, eh?”
“Yeah, I imagine living through it would’ve been scary. I don’t blame you, but Em’s clever, one of the most clever people I know.” He smiles softly.
“It was the best, finding Momma and Da- um, Bucky, and the siblings. I have a grown up niece, it’s terrifying and amazing.”
“Agreed. And besides, banks are insured, so that’s very good.”
Becca smiles slowly, then touches his hand. “May I hug you? Trust me, he wouldn’t mind you saying that at all if it’s what you want.” She squeezes him gently. “Trust me, I get it. I went into the ice barely twenty six, and when I came back in the wrong universe I have what, six great nieces and nephews? And two great-great granddaughters? Your oldest sister is my age, biologically. It’s okay to be scared, it’s natural my dear”
Mikey nods, letting Becca wrap him up in a hug.
“He’s been a better dad than my…dna donor.” He says quietly.
“I’m glad he is, then. You know he would accept you, okay? You don’t have to say a word, doll, but he’ll still care like you’re his own.” She strokes his hair quietly
Mikey just cuddle in, Becca’s presence and care is comforting.
“I know he would…it’s more…I don’t want to step on the others toes.”
“You do realize that the man we’re talking about half raised me, then adopted Leo, who was at the time half dead, in the throes of a severe addiction, sixteen, and had hitchhiked several hundred miles with twins on the way? Who adopted his sister even though she was just as stubborn as you are about not getting in the way?” Becca squeezes him, the cool metal of her left arm brushing the back of his neck. “He doesn’t care. He loves being a dad”
“I’ll…I’ll talk to him…just not today.” He mumbles.
“Doesn’t have to be today. Today, just enjoy the party, and if you want to stay after and just… be, you’re welcome to”
“Thanks.” He smiles and wipes his eyes a little.
“Of course, darling. I’m always here”
Mikey nods and smiles.
There’s a cacophony of noise from outside, Lucie’s excited giggling squeal, shouts of encouragement from Charlie and indignant protesting from Wyatt.
“Uh oh.” He grins.
“There’s trouble,” Becca grins, scooping up the great-niece who comes racing in
“Hello princess.” Mikey coos, tickling Lucie.
“I feel like your Auntie Charlie has been causing chaos.”
“Lunita! Ah, all my favorite nieces and nephews,” Becca exclaims, moving through hugs and swinging Charlie around quickly
Wyatt wanders in, a moonboot now instead of crutches. His hair and tshirt are soaking wet.
“Charlie taught Luce how to use the water pistol.”
“Goodness, I hope you taught her properly?” Becca raises an eyebrow. “Good form, yes? And proper safety?”
“Naturally. If you’re going to chaos, do it properly.” Charlie grins, a glint in her eye.
“And you always treat a gun as if it is loaded, and keep them off of your mother’s carpets,” Becca adds proudly
“Yes! Remember that Luce!” Charlie grins

A few weeks after Wyatt’s incident, Bucky gets a call from Becca — her voice is almost giddy with excitement, words running at ten miles a minute
“James! Bucky, guess what! My back pay finally went through! I mean it it took basically forever because it was supposed to not take long at all but it did work!”

“That’s amazing kiddo!” Bucky grins, happy for her.
“We’ll have to celebrate!”
Becca grins, smirking. “So… that fancy pro bono lawyer you got me? He got them to give me full hazard pay, insurance payouts, psychological comp, and like eight million other things, so…. How about coming to help me shop around for a car? And also I noticed that pretty cottage like five minutes down the road from you is up for sale, and well… honestly I’d love to be closer to my family”
“And we’d love to have you closer! That sounds great. What sort of car are you thinking?”
“Well, I do like the idea of something vintage since it tends to feel more comfortable but I do like some of the newer designs as well — Novie was showing me a Volkswagen Beetle and honestly I do want to look into it,” Becca replied
“Beetles are good. There’s a second hand dealer that’s reliable.”
“Would you be up for coming with me?”
“Absolutely.” He grins
She hums, and he can hear a kettle whistling. “When are you free?”
“Well, it’s Lina’s turn to be with Wyatt at PT, so I can pick you up after I drop her off?”
“That sounds perfect, I’d love that”
“See you then kiddo.”
“Not a kid, I’m literally a great-aunt,” Becca snorts
When he pulls up to her apartment building she’s waiting with a smile, tugging her coat tighter around herself as she slips in. “Hey there!”
“You’re still my kid sister.”
He drives them to the dealership, navigating the minimal traffic.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll accept it”
She watches, anxiously tapping her fingers. “It’s insane — before I couldn’t even open a bank account without dad or you.. and now I’ve got enough to buy my house and car cash”
“One of the better things to happen, you can be truly independent.” Bucky nods.
“It really is,” she smiles, tying her hair back. “How’s Wyatt recovering?”
“Physically? He’s hitting milestones nicely, a few memory issues at times.”
“Good… oh, poor dear… memory issues are the worst…” she sighs. “I assume he’s in therapy as well?”
“Definitely. Lina arranged that.”
“Good,” Becca nods
The dealership has cars lined up in rows, various makes and models, in nearly every colour.
Becca smiles curiously, walking through the rows with her brother
Bucky looks around.
“What sort of car were you thinking?”
“Something practical I think, maybe a bit older. With easy engine access so I can do matinence,” she decides considering
There’s several cars that fit the requirements, further into the yard.
“This is where I usually get the cars I fix up.”
“I see why.. oh, I like this one!” She stops by one, a 1960s Chevy. “And it looks like it’s in good shape…”
Bucky inspects the car, with an investigative frown.
“Hmm…looks good…better check the engine.”
Becca nods, popping the hood quickly and making sure it’s propped, examining the work that’s been done
“If you want, you can borrow my workshop to do anything that needs doing.” Bucky offers.
“That would be amazing… looks like I just need new oil and coolant if I get this one…” she comments
“It does appear to be a solid choice.” Bucky nods approvingly.
“I’ll ask them about it, I think. Ask for a test drive and all,” Becca smiles
“Good idea kiddo.”
As they locate a sales man Becca stretches, taking in the day. “It’s lovely here”
“It really is. Have you seen the lake at our place yet? Amazing this time of year.”
“I haven’t- I was going to let your kids take me but I promised Wyatt I’d wait until we could swim together, so it may be a bit,” Becca smiles. “My doctor put me on physical therapy as well”
“Ah, well, with his stubbornness I’m sure it won’t be long. We should make a family fay of it.”
His face is concerned.
“Are you okay sis?”
“We absolutely should,” Becca smiles.
She softens, squeezing his arm. “I’m fine. We both know hydra is hard on bodies, and the doctors want me to continue conditioning to make sure it doesn’t hurt me long term. It’s preventative”
He sighs, knowing all too well.
“So, no, nothing really. It’s just preventative to keep me from being paralyzed or something”
“Good. And it helps?”
“If nothing else I tend to feel nice and relaxed after it,” Becca replies
“That sounds nice.”
“It is, you should join me sometime. It’s mostly a lot of stretching,”
“Maybe.” He smiles
“You know you need to relax,” Becca chuckles. “Your wife agrees with me”
“I am relaxed.” Bucky insists, even though they both know the truth.
“You should come see the car I’ve been fixing up for Luna.”
Becca just raises an eyebrow, glancing at him knowingly
“I’d love to. You’re such a girl dad sometimes. I mean you love your sons just as much but you’re absolutely a girl dad to your grandbabies,” she teases
He grins at that.
“Yeah yeah. But they didn’t have a positive male role model in their lives for so long. I guess I try to make up for it.”
Becca squeezes his hand. “Look. I don’t Know if I’m ever getting the chance to have kids or if I want that but… you are the best role model any child could have and I would love to have kids who grew up around you. And you being both a girl dad and boy dad at the same time is so fucking cute- all grown up, grandpa”
“Neither of us expected grankids so soon, but we wouldn’t change it for the world.” He smiles.
“Just take a breath, whatever is meant to happen will happen. Any kid would be lucky to call you mama, if that’s the path your life takes.”
She smiles back. “And Luna’s all grown up, huh?”
“Exactly… and even if I don’t have mine I will end up with many dogs and be the chaotic spinster aunt, or maybe just the chaotic childless aunt,” she grins
“Well, you do have adoring nieces and nephews.” He chuckles.
“Wyatt asked when ‘Auntie Becs’ is coming again. Something about you both reading Shakespeare.”
“And I love doting. I missed too much of their lives to not do that now,” she nods. “And, tell him I’ll come over this evening. I promised I’d bring him a copy of some less-known sonnets”
“He’ll love that. I think focusing back on his degree is keeping him sane right now. He was always an energy ball.” Bucky shakes his head with a sigh.
“Too much like his father?”
“Too much like both of us I’m afraid. You haven’t met my brothers in law.”
“I haven’t,” Becca agrees softly
“Peter is the definition of go fast. Pyro has no impulse control.” Bucky shakes his head fondly.
“Ah, so it’s a family trait on both sides?” Becca chuckles
“Immensely.” He laughs.
The dealer finally arrives and they discuss the car for a good while.
Eventually, they sign all the papers and Becca grins, paying outright from her backpay. “There we are… my own car, huh.”
Bucky opens the car door for her.
“Your highness!”
She laughs, climbing in. “Why thank you, sir!”
He bows and laughs.
“Congratulations sis.”
“Meet you at your house?”
“Absolutely.”
“I’ll be there,” she winks. “Probably first”
“Hooligan.” He teases, then his expression softens.
“I’m so proud of you Becca. And I know Mom and Dad would be too.”
“I know,” she winks. At the words, she softens. “Mom would be. Dad is a maybe”
“Hmm.” Bucky hums.
“Alright, let’s go!”
Becca grins, pulling away. Even though she’s obeying most of the laws, she beats him home easily
Bucky shakes his head as he pulls into the long drive. Charlie is sitting on the porch with Wyatt, Hedy lying between their feet.
“See, I told you I’d win!” Becca grins, hopping out of her car
“Auntie!” Charlie beams, bouncing down to throw herself into a hug.
“How’s my chaos protege?” Becca teases, swinging her niece aground. “Auntie Beck’s got wheels!”
Charlie giggles wildly, an acid green water pistol poking out of her pocket.
“I’m good! Hell yeah! Nice wheels!”
“Okay- why is it- lime? Why are the colors.. like that?” Becca raises an eyebrow. “This isn’t even lime, this is… neon?”
“This is the Stubborn Older Brother Wrangler. It’s acid green just because I like it. It’s very effective, I recommend you get one.” She shoots Bucky a mischievous look.
“Ahh, got you. I’ll have to paint mine, if you won’t mind. Still green. Just… less green for me I think,” Becca smiles. “And remind me to take you axe throwing when you’re old enough”
Charlie’s eyes light up.
“I have paint and stickers! We could make yours so cool!”
She gives Bucky a pleading look.
“Please can I go axe throwing?!”
“I’m down,” Becca smiles.
“And both of you- when you’re eighteen, kiddo. Hold your horses”
“Be patient bear cub.” Bucky ruffles Charlie’s hair.
Becca smiles. “Be glad I said eighteen. This one made me wait until what was it, twenty? After we were both active duty soldiers in the Second World War?”
“Trust me, it was a sensible decision.”
“I was a supersoldier by that point, and active duty spy and soldier! I could be trusted with a machine gun! I was driving German tanks through their own troops!” Becca argues, not actually mad but just on principle
“Still my kid sister though.” Bucky leans against his car.
She rolls her eyes fondly. “Hence why I even listened”
“Auntie!” Wyatt grins, trying to get up from his seat on the porch.
The bruising has faded and his arm is out of the sling, but his leg is still bound up and he has crutches beside him.
Becca grins and walks up, helping him back down. “Look, Wy, independence is good but so is listening to doctors.” She hugs him close
“But I’m so bored!” He whines, hugging her back.
“I’ve caught up on my school stuff but I just wanna play lacrosse again.”
“I knooooowwwww,” Becca pouts in return. “I’m sure we can find something. I bet there’s an adaptive lacrosse league somewhere”
He sighs, trying not let his impatience get the best of him.
Charlie spritzes him with her water pistol and a cackle.
Becca laughs. “I’m serious you know. Adaptive sports are a great option especially while you’re recovering”
“Maybe.” He mumbles, wiping water off his face.
Becca considers. “If there’s an all-ages league I’ll join in. I’m physically not that old, and I am decidedly an amputee”
“That does sound fun.”
“Mmm. We can do it together, yeah? Plus, I’m adult supervision. Bet you could talk my brother and favorite sibling into a travel league,” she winks
“Probably could.” He grins.
“Would you read my essay for me? I’d ask Mama but she’s been pretty busy today.”
Becca nods, kicking her feet up on the small table in front of the porch sofa as she takes it. “Sure think, punk”
Wyatt hands her his tablet, the screen full of an essay on Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra.
He cuddles into her side a little, still nervous about people other than his parents reading his work.
She casually wraps an arm over his shoulders, scrolling slowly as she makes sure to read it twice. “This looks great, Wyatt,” she smiles
“Yeah?” He asks with a small smile.
“Absolutely”
He beams at that, ears going a little pink.
She ruffles his hair fondly
Bucky smiles at them both.
His sister smiles back, softer now. Finally in a secure place, safe, with her own family to share in. Maybe not perfectly okay, but happy. She tucks Wyatt close when a branch cracks from someone steps on it, instinctively, then starts to pull away awkwardly
“It’s okay Auntie.” Wyatt pats her arm gently, speaking softly.
Becca pauses, taking a slow breath as she centers herself. Then nods. “Thanks, sweetie,” she murmurs, slowly settling in. “Just got pulled into my head for a second.” Her metal hand flexes, as if ensuring it’s not disappeared
“I get it.” Wyatt nods, and soon the smell of fresh bread and soup wafts from inside the house.
“Mmm.. sounds like your mama made soup,” Becca remarks after a while sitting quietly. “You feeling up to it?”
Wyatt nods just as his stomach growls loudly.
“Yeah, could you pass my crutches?” He asks, giving a side glance to Charlie and her water pistol.
Becca laughs, handing them over. “Remember, Charlie, don’t shoot the elderly, it’s bad manners”
Charlie pokes her tongue out.
“Only if the elderly misbehave.”
“I don’t misbehave, I situationally adapt to complete objectives in creative and unusual ways,”
“I’m gonna use that line.” She grins
Becca winks playfully, giving Wyatt an arm to brace on as he stands. “Glad to be of service, darlin’”
Charlie giggles and stands on Wyatt’s other side as they head into the kitchen.

“I’ll ask them about it, I think. Ask for a test drive and all,” Becca smiles

As they locate a sales man Becca stretches, taking in the day. “It’s lovely here”
“It really is. Have you seen the lake at our place yet? Amazing this time of year.”
“I haven’t- I was going to let your kids take me but I promised Wyatt I’d wait until we could swim together, so it may be a bit,” Becca smiles. “My doctor put me on physical therapy as well”
“Ah, well, with his stubbornness I’m sure it won’t be long. We should make a family fay of it.”

She softens, squeezing his arm. “I’m fine. We both know hydra is hard on bodies, and the doctors want me to continue conditioning to make sure it doesn’t hurt me long term. It’s preventative”

“So, no, nothing really. It’s just preventative to keep me from being paralyzed or something”

“Yeah yeah. But they didn’t have a positive male role model in their lives for so long. I guess I try to make up for it.”
Becca squeezes his hand. “Look. I don’t Know if I’m ever getting the chance to have kids or if I want that but… you are the best role model any child could have and I would love to have kids who grew up around you. And you being both a girl dad and boy dad at the same time is so fucking cute- all grown up, grandpa”
“Neither of us expected grankids so soon, but we wouldn’t change it for the world.” He smiles.
“Just take a breath, whatever is meant to happen will happen. Any kid would be lucky to call you mama, if that’s the path your life takes.”

“Exactly… and even if I don’t have mine I will end up with many dogs and be the chaotic spinster aunt, or maybe just the chaotic childless aunt,” she grins

“Wyatt asked when ‘Auntie Becs’ is coming again. Something about you both reading Shakespeare.”
“And I love doting. I missed too much of their lives to not do that now,” she nods. “And, tell him I’ll come over this evening. I promised I’d bring him a copy of some less-known sonnets”
“He’ll love that. I think focusing back on his degree is keeping him sane right now. He was always an energy ball.” Bucky shakes his head with a sigh.
“Too much like his father?”
“Too much like both of us I’m afraid. You haven’t met my brothers in law.”

“Peter is the definition of go fast. Pyro has no impulse control.” Bucky shakes his head fondly.

The dealer finally arrives and they discuss the car for a good while.
Eventually, they sign all the papers and Becca grins, paying outright from her backpay. “There we are… my own car, huh.”

Becca grins, pulling away. Even though she’s obeying most of the laws, she beats him home easily

Luna grins, hugging Charlie. “Well, so, you know how I finished my apprenticeship?”
“No? I had no idea! It’s not like your mom, and like everyone has been proud about it or anything.” Charlie teases, nudging Luna playfully.
She laughs softly. “Yeah yeah, I know… Maman is super proud, obviously. She’s been making such a thing of it and honestly? It’s not terrible. Annnyyywayys… I was gonna ask if you wanted to help pick what I’m getting done as my celebration? Also the celebration itself, though that’s less fancy”

I love the jellyfish, in general, and the butterfly is actually my music logo, well like what I sell as stickers and put on cards and stuff… and the lunar phases are a classic but it’s also a Neitra symbol of life, and I love them all. It would hurt but I’d love to put the lunar on my spine if k her it”

Luna nods back, leaning against her aunt. “I kind of am leaning towards the jellyfish for now, I’ve wanted them the longest and I’ve loved them forever…”
