“I’m working as an editor for this major fashion magazine. I moved up so quickly I am so impressed with myself. New York fashion consultant at your service.” Kirby didn’t want to be so rude so she figured she should ask something about Nina, too. “How about you? How’s life after graduating treating you?”

“That sounds so amazing! Do you get to travel for it as well?” 

She didn’t actually enjoy talking about herself much, but Kirby seemed approachable enough now and Nina still had alcohol in her system. “I never left Wayland. I’m not a surgical intern at Wayland General, teach dance classes at the local elementary school, and I help my mom out at the Milky Way Diner every chance I get.” She realized how boring she sounded and she was starting to feel the conversation drift. “So, who’s your favorite person to interview?”

Had tears in my eyes from the first second until the very last, this brilliant, beautiful, brave man deserves nothing but the best and it’s incredible how even when he came out, he used that opportunity not just to share his truth, but also to help others as he set up a donation link to The Trevor Project on his video and people already donated over $8000.

It started to make sense why Kirby and Nina never spent a lot of time around each other in the past, they were just two different types of socials. While she ignored the whole part of the conversation where she seemed to be talking to herself, Kirby did land back into conversation when she asked about something else that wasn’t Eva’s death. “New York is fucking amazing,” she started, excited to be talking about her own self. “I’m making it and I’ve gotten this amazing opportunity and it’s just perfect. Really. You should come into town one day and I could give you the whole tour.”

Life started to flow back into the conversation and Nina flooded with relief. This time she asked for water while listening to Kirby talk about her life in the big city. “Oh, that sounds awesome! What sort of opportunity? Do tell!”

She was fully aware she avoided the suggestion to visit the city completely, but she had a feeling the girl in front of her wouldn’t really care.

Another day, another dollar

“If anyone’s interested in picking up a few shifts at the Milky Way Diner this summer to help with the influx of tourists, be my guest.”

“I’m sorry this happened, Eva. I’ll expose them. I promise.”

At least tequila would give her a good buzz, though she wouldn’t allow herself to get drunk. “Good choice,” Kirby said in approval. “Nina, I’m Kirby. And damn, a year behind me in high school… That was ages ago.” She made a face at the memory running through her mind. “I’ve got some… Things to resolve. So, I’ll be staying. For some time. What about you?”

“Oh, exciting! It’s weird how everyone’s deciding to stay for a bit after the funeral.” What started as happiness quickly died down as she continued to speak. “Weird how it took someone dying for it to happen,” Nina said regretfully. He buzzed state of mind was getting to her, and maybe talking wasn’t a good idea anymore. She was afraid to slip up with the information she still had no idea what to do with. “But enough about that. I heard you were living in New York! What’s the big city like?”

She felt sorry for herself, her privileged and spoiled ass couldn’t help but feel bad that this town was going to shit but then again, she felt like utter shit whenever she was back home. Something she didn’t ever want to be back to. Tilting her head back, the girl let out a scoff, not believing that this was her new life. “I wouldn’t go that far, but hopefully I don’t get stuck here forever… This town isn’t my favorite,” she told her, scrunching her nose. 

“Callie? Great,” she huffed, another perfect child that she had gotten under her skin. “Benny, yup. I’ll talk to him about it but no doubt, he’d be willing to do it.. especially if Callie is joining.” 

She knew all of them working together could be a recipe for disaster, but she pushed the thought away and let the hope of everything working out in her favor wash over her. She’d need to keep everyone distracted and she did damage control at the hospital and found a way to expose Dr. Reed. “How about we all meet tomorrow and plan how we’ll make Wayland the new summer destination?”

The girl couldn’t but give the girl a smug smile. It was refreshing being around her again, a part of her feeling guilty that she left without so much as a goodbye to the girl. 

“Well you’re doing a stand up job. Couldn’t image this town in any one else’s hands,” she said with a smile. Tossing her dark hair off her shoulder, the girl tilted her head to the side, listening to her proposal. It’s been a while since she dabbled in history and a break from Los Angeles could be a relief to be honest. “I’m in. Wayland has never been so in need of a makeover and a media blitz is the way to it’s heart. Do you know who else is staying around for the summer?” She remembered one dangerous fact and a hiss fell from her mouth because of it. “I’m gonna need to rent a place then, I can’t stay in a hotel for months, now can I?”

Excitement flowed through her. She was probably just nostalgic and grasping for hope that so many people were coming back to Wayland. Her mom’s diner needed the influx of new customers to keep business rolling, and her dad’s bar needed more than just townies drinking their nights away. Wayland was in desperate need of a social makeover, and Marina felt that it was her responsibility to keep this town alive; maybe that way everyone would be too distracted to pay attention to what really happened to Eva Klein and how Marina was involved in everything. “You’re a life saver, I swear!” 

“Callie is helping put the play altogether, and I think I’ll need a little help to convince Benny to write the play. But maybe you three could work together. What do think?”

She bit her lip, anticipating her to break through her worded code of fixed hair and twisted tongues. But it seems that the small life had been beneficial to the shorter girl and truthfully she didn’t know if she was thrilled or weakened by the thought of being left behind in her own castle walls. “I love it though! But it’s all about principal and what you can handle. It’s okay if you’re not built for it,” she hummed happily. “I belong in a place where people can disappear and resurface if they want to,” she nodded along. I’ve seen dance concerto’s where they couldn’t even hold a candle to your choreo,” she hummed happily. 

“Odd, maybe. But old town sweet hearts that can’t keep their hands off each other? Of course I’m happy, Ben is… nice,” she said through a clenched jaw. At this point she didn’t care who she told the truth to even if it seemed strained. It wasn’t like her followers were going to know who or what Nina was to her. It sounded harsh but she couldn’t help but speak the truth, LA was filled with those scum bags who would rather tell the truth than keep your feelings safe. “What about you, have a beau that you’re gonna share?” 

At the compliment of her dancing skills, Nina smiled brightly. “Flattery will get you everywhere, V.” She called for another round of drinks. She noticed how Nova didn’t answer her question about how long she would stay in town, but Nina wasn’t going to push it. She figured Nova was still figuring that out herself. And since Nina was working on keeping Benny in town for the summer to help with the high school play script, maybe Nova could be helpful, too.

“And no, no one significant. I guess I’ve been too preoccupied keeping this town running one day at a time.” Marina wasn’t used to talking about her sex life with anyone. After high school and everyone that left her behind, she stopped making close connections. Nina wasn’t close to anyone and she didn’t like to think about it. Instead of continuing with the conversation on her life, she chose to try and change the topic completely.  “Hey, V, what do you think about maybe helping me out for a few days? Once this whole Klein business ends, the town will need a pick-me-up. I’m helping the schools put on a summer play. I’ll be taking care of choreography and I have some other people helping with the play as a whole. But I think Wayland could really use a positive publicity boost. Maybe you know of a way to make that happen? Stick around, show the small town charm to your followers, promote us a bit. Anything, really.” Nina was worried about the answer, but she was hopeful.

Nova was shocked to say the least when it came to her old friend plucking the joint from her hands. “All right,” she mused happily before wrapping her arm around the others shoulder. “Now that’s what I’m talking about.” 

Keeping her lips pursed, the girl couldn’t help but have a smile forced onto her lips. She should’ve known but then again, she hadn’t wanted to keep up with anyone in this town ever again. And when she mentioned Ben, she couldn’t help but force the smile more. She needed to represent the image after all, or at least that’s what she told herself. “How lucky am I?” It paid off to be the best at lying. “He really shines on the big screen and I can highlight his shirtless instagram stories. But hey! You keep up with my feed, do you like the bullshit and glamour of Hollywood!”

She sensed Nova’s discomfort, but her friend was too good at pretending. Growing up in a family like hers, it would have been hard to believe if she hadn’t picked up a trick or two. But she hoped she could somehow crack through that exterior and those walls so perfectly constructed.  “Honestly, V? I can’t really stand the whole big city thing. I’m not sure how you do it. Seems like you enjoy it, though.” Nina had all the ingredients to get out of Wayland and see the world after high school. Her dance company was ready to take her on tour to Europe, she got into all the best colleges... but she was terrified. When she got injured the night before prom, she took it as a blessing and the perfect excuse to stay in Wayland. She never told anyone. 

“As for Ben, I couldn’t care less about his abs and whatever you guys are up to. It just seemed like you guys were an odd pair, that’s all. But if you’re happy, I’m happy.” And she meant it. “So... how long are you staying in town for?”

The girl couldn’t help but have her heart leap while seeing her old friend. She felt oh so guilty when she left this old town for the soul purpose of the friends she’s made, Nina being one of them. Some people only saw the surface level but their friendship was more than that. “Nina,” she said, wrapping her friend in for a hug. Maybe LA had a toll on her, only reaching for a surface level relationship. She held the joint between her fingers. “You want a hit too? And thank you,” she nudged. “Should I ask what have you been up to or would that be insensitive?” 

Taking the joint from Nova, Nina took a drag and gave it back. Suddenly it felt like Nova had never left and the rush of emotions welled up in her stomach. She kept up with Nova through social media, mostly. But she never dared send her friend a message or contact her in any way. She had accepted her lifestyle and had come to peace with it. She didn’t want to feel too hopeful, but six years had passed and maybe they could find a new way to navigate their friendship. 

“No, not insensitive. Um, I’ve been teaching dance classes at the Wayland Elementary and I’m a surgical intern at the hospital. So, I’ve been keeping busy.” She hated small talk, but she realized she would do anything to continue reconnecting with Nova. “What about you? I don’t want to sound stalkerish, but I try to keep up with your social media. I never thought you would end up with Ben Love. Kinda weird, but I guess it makes sense now that you’re both famous.”

The girl took a lighter to the tightly rolled joint that was pressed between her stained lips. As she took a long drag, the girl inhaled deeply before turning to the person next to her. “If anyone asks, it’s medicinal. God this town hasn’t fucking changed. Anyway, let’s get a drink,” she said turning to the person next to her. “You want a drink, I mean… It’s on me.” 

“I’ll have one with you.” Nina wasn’t sure what to feel seeing Nova. Too many years had gone by since her friend if she could even call her that left her behind. “Hi, Nova. Welcome back, I suppose.”

Dear Diary,

Eva Klein’s death was no accident. So far the press hasn’t gotten wind of this and neither has the police. The hospital is covering it all up and I’m the only intern that knows. If Dr. Reed finds out that I know, he could put all the blame on me and my career is over. He’s as bad as bad can go in the medical field, and I can’t afford to lose everything now. I can’t trust anyone and the Klein’s will not rest until they find out the truth.

Kirby tried to do a quick search in her mind to try and remember Nina, but came up blank. “Nina!” she exclaimed after a few silent seconds, feigning memories. “Of course I remember you. Well, I’m actually staying for a while. Did you hear about Eva? So sad…”

“Yeah, it’s terrible.”

Maybe approaching someone that’s here for the funeral wasn’t the best idea. Another reminder of what she wanted to run away from. 

“But let’s not ruin the mood. Plenty of time to be sad.” Desperate to change topics, she searched her drunken mind for memories of Kirby in high school. Something they had in common or literally anything to distract her. “I remember you left town for New York after graduation. How’d that play out?”

“Sounds like a plan! I’m dying for your mom’s french toast.” 

She smiled and hugged her. Maybe being back in Wayland wouldn’t be so awful after all.

“Tomorrow, say 10am?”

“It’s a date!” 

“I’ll see you tomorrow. Thank you!” And with that, Nina said goodbye to her friend and then ran off home to change into her scrubs for her overnight shift at the hospital.

“Look, I don’t know how long I can stay in Wayland. I have a show lined up in NY and I have to see how that will play out… However, I will help you as much as I can as long as I’m here. I’ll even help your mom out in the diner. for old time’s sake.” She smiled at Nina and flpped her hair.

 Maybe if she played it cool and like this is almost charity work for her, she wouldn’t seem as broke as she actually is. The truth is, she definitely needs the money as she’e been surviving on Ramen and coffee in the city.

“You’re a lifesaver!”

Nina was delighted and relieved. This would help her and the town. After a tragedy like the one that was just brought upon this town, the community needed to come together and feel safe and sound. Now Nina also had time to come up with a plan to clear her name before her secret gets out. Eva Klein’s death would not be the end of Dr. Marina Sawyer. 

“How about we meet tomorrow for some coffee, my treat. Or rather, my mom’s at the diner. I’ll give you the run down of everything and we can set this sea in motion. What do you think?”

“Stay for the whole summer? That’s- That’s quite a lot of time, I mean, June just started…” She started to babble, anxiety slowly creeping in. The very thought of being home for any moment longer than required felt uneccessary and, honestly, terrifying.

“Besides, there isn’t a life left for me here, Nina. What would I do all summer? Go back to work at the diner?” She tried to joke, to relive some of her pent up tension.

“Look, before you start freaking out, let me explain.” 

“We need a director for the summer play! I can handle dance numbers just fine, but you have so much more experience than I do. You can direct, manage, and create a whole new world of high school play possibilities!” Nina was growing desperate. Realistically, yes, she could handle most of it, but she didn’t actually have the time. Summer is when most tourists come to town and most accidents happen, so her hours at the hospital would be much longer and she would burn out. She had a plan to get Benny Love to write for the play. She knew he would be hard to convince, but maybe putting him and Callie working together again would help them.  Callie told Nina everything about their time in NYC together and Nina felt the need to fix their friendship somehow. 

“Pretty please??? We need your amazing talent! And if you’re strapped for cash, you know my mom will always welcome you back with open arms at the diner. I know you hated it before, be used to have good times there. Plus, she’d probably make you a seasonal manager, so you would make your hours and get better pay!”
