He is there to help him color inside the lines, make him sandwiches and soup, and tie his shoes. He is there to hug him and kiss on his first days of school, and to walk him in if need be. He is there to teach him and tease him and laugh with him. He is always there to embarrass him, but that’s part of life. He is there to tell him to go ask your mother. He is there to lecture him, prepare him for the monster called high school. He is there to put up with his teenage moods and his co-ed relationships. He is there to approve, disapprove, accept and forgive. He is there to smile when his name is called and feel proud. He is there to embrace him and kiss him before he goes to live and learn a thousand miles away. He is there to see him become a workingman. He is there to watch him grow as the lines on his face grow. He is there to welcome him home, always, and hug him and smell the smell he remembers from childhood, the warm, protecting, comforting smell of a tatay.
