This camera shy hairy woodpecker played a little peek-a-boo before getting too nervous and flying off. (at Fort Mccoy, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxh75OyAvmh/?igshid=biwhnnjckv06
This is the aftermath of birch pole theft. These trees were illegally cut down and sold to make interior decorations. When in the woods, keep an eye out for people parked near the road cutting small diameter paper birch trees, and report it. #timbertheft (at Woodboro, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxXyS3sgZHL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qozpnrnsymua
Caught in the act! This male cardinal was singing his heart out in my tallest tree this morning. When he spotted me he stopped until I backed around the corner of the house. #cardinal #birdsong #nature #urbanwildlife (at Rhinelander, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvHlgqpgPJw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yl718dne7hqt
One last step. Make sure you clean all the drain holes on the bottom and the ventilation holes on either side. I was surprised to see how plugged up they were! Now I'm all set for a new family to move in. #chickadee #birdhouse #springcleaning https://www.instagram.com/p/BvHkj4pg_vk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1k8iawxp41cuq
a closer look at the bedding from my chickadee box. It always amazes me to see the material they use. and to think that they carry it in one tiny beakfull at a time! #birdhouse #chickadee #springcleaning https://www.instagram.com/p/BvHkXaNgXcY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wpmkk0ovt9t7
I opened your my chickadee nesting box to see how it looked. I had cleared it out after jump day last year, but it often gets used more than once a year. Looks like it provided someone a soft comfy home. If you look closely there is a lot of mammal hair in the bedding. #birdhouse #chickadee #springcleaning https://www.instagram.com/p/BvHZKBtgvEl/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15c1hwyilnv25
After reading my recent Wild Connections about shrikes in the Northwoods Star Journal, reader Bruce Gary sent me this photo taken in March of 2017 of a Northern Shrike in his backyard near Rhinelander. It was taken from a distance and when he enlarged it, it became a little fuzzy. (at Rhinelander, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuOoAozA6L3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xb0god3w6vgn
After the oak will restrictions ended this fall, we trimmed some branches from our oak tree. We threw them in the back yard, and it snowed soon afterwards. I happened to notice recently that the city bunnies attacked the branches, stripping the bark off to get to the soft inner bark. If I had put a trail camera on it I bet I would have had some interesting photos! https://www.instagram.com/p/BspBNEqgI6U/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lvqs4kt85k9h

If you want to help monarchs and other pollinators next year, start now! These milkweed pods are dripping with ripe seed. Go out and grab some, take them home and step them into the snow. They should be easy to spot right now; these were on a town road right of way in eastern Oneida County. #pollinators https://www.instagram.com/p/BqdHZtcAYWa/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1iy7jk319qqma

When out west last month I talked to a hunter who said a local told him “when God finished creating the universe he put all the leftover rocks in Utah.” Let me tell you, there are a lot of rocks out there. Lots and lots of rocks. Some pretty interesting looking rocks, too. (at Utah) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqLrvgPAP6C/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1extf67o7d3wt
Recently I saw this 30-Star Flag hanging in the Oneida County courthouse. The 29-star flag, introduced to recognize the state of Iowa in 1847, only lasted one year. The 30th star was added that year to recognize Wisconsin’s entry into statehood on May 29th, 1848. This flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1848, and while it only lasted three years it saw three presidents serve under it: James Polk (1845-1849), Zachary Taylor (1849-1850), and Millard Fillmore (1850-1853). https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp_F2wLgibl/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=x0nl38g1jbwy
Today would have been Roy Rogers' 107th birthday. He was a big influence on my dad, and on me when I was young. Here are some words of wisdom from the Roy Rogers Riders Club: Roy Rogers Riders Club Rules 1. Be neat and clean. 2. Be courteous and polite. 3. Always obey your parents. 4. Protect the weak and help them. 5. Be brave but never take chances. 6. Study hard and learn all you can. 7. Be kind to animals and care for them. 8. Eat all your food and never waste any. 9. Love God and go to Sunday school regularly. 10. Always respect our flag and country. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp0qAd-gSDo/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jm08xfan6g2a
Great example of wolf tracks in frozen mud. Straight line, direct registration, and the claws are worn down, only visible when the track is pressed deep enough in the mud. When you take photos of tracks and prints, take one looking down the track and another of a well defined print, including something (like my size 12 boot) in the photo for scale. https://www.instagram.com/p/BpV1LDcnG6c/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1cqg7xtmb8lsw
