Mother Knows Best | Susan and Mary AU

“Finn already has his moments of scepticism, I know that much,” Mary said honestly with a sigh. She closed her eyes and let her head fall into her hands, massaging her temples for a moment to try and relieve some of the stress. She knew it should be Finn’s place to say something, but bringing this up only seemed to add to the stress. She hadn’t even thought about it as a factor. She was more worried about him leaving. “Well, I’ve been hiding in here long enough.”
“Yeah, I know. Charlie gets very upset when he knows that Finn’s upset because of him,” she said. She’d gotten several calls before, and it did make her call into question whether him taking on this son had been a good idea. Now, she knew that it was. Charlie was happy with Mary, Finn included. Susan offered a small smile and said, “Your husband and son are downstairs playing some beautiful piano if you want to join. Or, Finn’s outside with the horses.”
Mary knew it was difficult for Charlie, especially at first, to get to grips with having a son that wasn’t actually his own flesh and blood. She wasn’t going to say there weren’t still moments when that was something stressful that still lurked in the back of their minds, but it was easier now to deal with. She nodded, “I’ll head downstairs then, Charlie’d end up having a stroke if I go anywhere near the horses right now,” she said, moving to get up. She paused before looking at her mother in law again, “Thank you. Again. I mean-“ she took a deep breath, “Thanks.”
Susan laughed and said, “Yeah, he most definitely would. Even when he was younger, he was protective of me while I was pregnant.” Susan moved to stand up, habitually straightening out her clothes and standing tall. She smiled and said, “Of course, darling. If you ever need to talk, about anything at all, I am here for you. Don’t forget that.”
