A restless soul I am indeed. The gypsy dance has me standing still, caught in a daze as melodies pour out of me, gushing onto the soft earth beneath my feet. I like my wine a little too much and I like to dust the cobwebs away from dear old melodies, bringing them back to life; if only for a brief moment.

As is a common practice with his Danish artist contemporaries Holsøe, Hammershøi, and Ilstead, Thomsen depicts the pianist in muted tones, wearing plain clothing, as she faces away from the viewer and plays, perhaps to an audience of one. She is likely in her own house enjoying the simple common daily activity of playing the piano.
