Not even in an "I'm outraged" kind of way, in a "genuinely perplexed as to what could be going on behind the scenes to produce these outcomes." I want to stop staring at the shadows on the wall and exit Plato's allegory of the website moderation

I have a theory.

Awhile back, tumblr fired most of its staff, leaving the site in the hands of a handful of technical folk. To make up for the manpower deficit they turned 99% of moderation over to AI. That's why random shit like landscapes & food get tagged as Mature; the colors & shapes look like porn to the robots.

That's bad enough. But in addition to that, a bunch of bad actors operate botnets that can be maliciously pointed at a user. Tumblr suddenly receives dozens of abuse reports from 'users' that don't exist. The bots pile onto the targeted account and tumblr's AI bans the innocent user.

Why would someone do that?

Hate. They hate trans people, black people, Palestinians... for a fee, the dark web will sic their botnets on anyone you want. Nazis. MAGA. kiwifarms dot net. Anybody who has an axe to grind can drive users off the Internet this way.

I'm not excusing tumblr. There exists well documented cases of malicious staff doing shitty things. But MOST of the current chaos we're seeing in 2026 is due to exploiting an overworked, understaffed moderation system.

Anyway. Just a theory.
