Valkhof Chapel, Nijmegen, Netherlands

The Sint-Nicolaas Chapel (Dutch: kapel) was built around 1030 as part of the Valkhof castle. It has the same form as the cathedral of Aachen but to a smaller scale. Together with a ruins of another chapel this is all what remains of the castle destroyed in 1796. The area is a park with great views of the river Waal.

The site of the castle is in the oldest city in the Netherlands – Nijmegen. The Romans built a Castellum on the hill, but Frankish colonists took over the site in 620 after the Fall of Rome. It was Charlemagne who constructed Het Valkof on the hill. Even after being partially destroyed by the Vikings, the manor continued to receive important visitors from around the world.
