Mireya de la Fuente was born in Spain to a Spanish father and an English mother. It was believed that her parents could not conceive and so, when her mother fell pregnant, it was declared a miracle and her parents chose a name which reflected that. Due to her heritage, she was raised with the ability to converse in Spanish and English. Her father was a prominent officer in the Spanish Armada and Mireya grew up with a thirst for adventure. Though her mother tried to teach her the traditional womanly pursuits of the home, Mireya was always far more interested in learning the art of sword fighting and would often practice with her fathers sword.
She was raised to be respectful to all but she was only genuinely kind to those she cared for. Her family and friends were some of the lucky ones. To those she did not care for, she was polite on a sarcastic level, hiding her insults within compliments. She grew up as an opinionated young woman who fought many winning battles with her wits. However, she proved that she could also fight with a weapon. One night she was attacked but before the attacker could harm her, she had overpowered him and held a dagger to his throat, telling him that if he spoke of the incident, everyone would know his dishonour of being beaten by a woman.
When she was old enough, she decided to live her dream of sailing the seas and so prepared to join the navy. However, she felt that their rules were too restrictive and that she was not respected. She made the decision that she would find a ship where she would be respected and the society in which she was expected to conform didn’t exist. She left in the night, taking what she could and leaving only a note for her parents, and by the next morning she was recruited to a pirate ship as a cook. For the first time, she felt she could truly be herself. She didn’t have to respect anyone she didn’t believe deserved it and she no longer had to hide her sharp tongue. This confident attitude and her skills with a sword won her the respect of the many crews she sailed with. Over the years she worked on various ships while making her way up the ranks, eventually becoming a pilot on The Lustful Secret.
Fleeing Polaris aboard the Salvation, Mireya thought that they were saved and could simply return to their lives of piracy. Upon reaching Tortuga, she welcomed the civilisation and the normality of it all. Deciding to stay a few weeks, as others from Polaris had, she got herself some lodgings until she and the remainder of the Lustful Secret found a ship and left port. But she, as many others, would not leave. She drank from the waters and is now cursed to protect the Elixir and Tortuga alongside those who escaped Polaris.
