Melanie stared wide eyed as she glanced towards the door of the foyer opening as a storm crashed around the manor. “What are you doing here it’s not safe!”
“I- I was just curious. Exploring,” Thomas quickly explained, his eyes large in surprise, “I figured it was better in here than out there in the storm. Are… you alright, miss?”
Melanie moved her candelabra towards him before nodding. “ Yes, yes. I’m fine I apologize. Thunderstorms are not… they don’t bode well with me.” She cleared her throat awkwardly. “What makes you curious here?”
“Well…” he said slowly, admiring the lovely, yet foreboding home, “I don’t travel all that much and I live in a mansion myself, so it seemed like quite the adventure to explore another manor. But this place… it has a sort of dark aura to it, doesn’t it? Something terrible happened here, I can sense it, the air is so thick and ominous.”
“Ah… yes..there have been, tragedies in this house.’ She frowned biting her lip. “ I don’t travel much either, business keeps me rather busy here.” She moved a piece of hair out of her face. “ If you wish to see my manor however I can give you a tour.”
“I would like that, if it isn’t too much trouble, thank you,” Thomad said, though glancing around tensely and gripping his cane tighter, “So what is it that makes this house so intimidating, if I may ask? I can’t quite place it, but I can certainly feel it.”
She nodded to him and started walking down the hall avoiding two doors that were directly in front of them. “ This house has just dealt with a lot of tragedy. My brother died, then my parents died, and then my fiancee dissapeared. Tragedy just seems to linger to this place.” She bit her lip. “ I don’t know exactly what you are sensing.”
“Maybe everything all at once…” he mumbled with a shudder, “Well… I’m sorry for your loss… losses, sorry. I’ve lost a few people, too, in the past. Hopefully this shroud of darkness will lift soon, hmm? ”
“…Yes, perhaps.” She opened a door. “ This is the library, if we had gone the opposite entrance we would have entered my office.”
“You have an office! Very nice. I’ve never had one, myself. I suppose I never really needed one,” Thomas replied chattily, “This library is very nice. I’ve always loved libraries, even when I couldn’t read the books. They have… a very good… smell to them. A library smell. If… you know what I mean. The older, the better. What sort of tales and tomes do you keep here?”
“Of course!” She smiled weakly. “I’m the owner of Thunder Mesa Mining Company, so I need an office to meet with people.” She nodded him. “ We have a lot of books, none that old honestly. when my father built the house he put a lot of books in. To be honest, I’ve never even read all of them.”
