Here's Charlotte "Charlie" Chambers with her "cousin" (if you've watched the Cloverway dub of Sailor Moon... you know). She started life as basically an expy of Becky Little, but has become her own more unique character, so I gave her a similar but still distinct look. (Also I considered making her color scheme mainly pink, but decided that it didn't look right - green is her color.)
Charlie is seemingly perfect. Comes from a wealthy family, straight A student, the star athlete at the posh private school she went to. She seems a bit bland and unrelatable... but if you really get to know her (and she trusts you enough to show the real her), she's a gigantic dork . She also suffers from pretty severe anxiety and the reason why she's a bit of an overachiever and people pleaser is that she's desperate for people to like her. However, she never really had any real, deep friendships. And while she did get a boyfriend when she got older... turned out he didn't really love her. (It doesn't help that she used to be bullied really badly when she was younger, just for being "annoying" about her "uncool" interests like Lego and Pokemon.) And regarding her family, while she has lived a life of wealth and comfort, she's also had to watch and hear her parents fight until they finally divorced when she was 13. I don't have her parents fully fleshed out yet, but her mom was a Karen who expected way too much from her daughter, and part of why Charlie's an overachiever is because her mother drilled it into her head. Charlie stayed with her dad (who runs a local chain of restaurants), because he's who she was closer to. Their relationship is generally okay, but he does get a bit absorbed in his work and can accidentally be neglectful. (As far as father figures go, she ends up feeling closer to her future father-in-law, Goro Mizuno. And she definitely ends up seeing Emi Mizuno as her REAL mom.)
So as a result of all of this, despite seeming perfect at first glance, Charlie was a very insecure, very lonely person. Even though she had a boyfriend, she still didn't quite feel like she could really be herself with him. But then it came time to go to college, and Charlie went up to Harvard. And that was where she met two twin sisters from Queens, NYC, and one of them was her roommate...
And some more random stuff:
She's from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I originally had her be from Florida, because I thought it'd be funny, but decided that it'd be more interesting and fun to write what I know. However, her bitch Karen mother IS from Florida (and moved back there after the divorce). Because of course.
Speaking of what could have been, her name was originally Charlie Chevalier and she was from France, as a holdover from an old Foster's Home OC. However, the French aspect kind of faded away as I made things simpler. Also, the name "Chambers" is a reference to Rebecca Chambers from Resident Evil :P
Her DOB is October 17th, 1993. I didn't have an OC who shared my DOB anymore (I don't even remember exactly how that happened), so I decided to give it to Charlie. She's from my home city, so why not?
She was born through in vitro fertilization, making her a "test tube baby". Her parents wanted a baby but just couldn't have one for whatever reason, so they turned to IVF. (They'd also been together a bit too long even then, and thought having a baby would make things better... it did not.) When Charlie found out, it gave her some existential crises (on top of her general anxiety and neurotic nature), but eventually came to terms with it. I thought this would be interesting to explore and good representation, as you don't really see many characters with this trait.
Again, she used to be bullied really badly when she was younger, just because other kids found her interests lame and thought she was annoying. As a result, she became very reluctant and even afraid to let others find out about most of her non-sports, non-"socially acceptable" interests. On top of that, being bullied and her parents' fighting have made her very sensitive to confrontations, physical contact and people raising their voices in anger.
However, if she really trusts you? She will happily infodump to you about her various interests, often without realizing she's doing it. She'll stop and apologize if she's being annoying. Anyway, she loves movies, a lot of video games, animation in general, and is a huge Lego Maniac. Oh, and she's also a major sneakerhead and collects them.
While Charlie was raised in a heteronormative household (with her mother being an "I'm not homophobic, BUT" type), she did notice from a very young age that she couldn't help but like some girls in addition to boys. She didn't tell a soul, either - while her dad probably would've been cool about it, her mother, probably not so much. And she did get a boyfriend, but never really felt that head-over-heels attraction towards him that she felt she was supposed to. No, Charlie wouldn't know that kind of love until after their breakup, when she grew closer and closer to her roommate...
Even after becoming the best of friends, lovers and soul mates with Yoshi, Charlie still can't help but feel insecure and waiting for the other shoe to drop, that Yoshi is just pretending to love her because she feels sorry for her or something, and secretly thinks she's annoying. She also can't help but feel that she probably doesn't stack up to Melanie Adler, Yoshi's first girlfriend, who died about four years before Yoshi and Charlie met. Yoshi is aware of these insecurities and when they come up, she's always super reassuring, in her own Yoshi way. "Charlie, I love you so fucking much. Come on, I'm cuddling this bullshit out of you."
Phew, that was longer than I'd planned. I really should actually WRITE these stories some day. Anyway, Charlie's a newer OC but it's been fun taking her from a Becky Little expy to something more unique that I ended up putting quite a few of my own traits into.
