hey mom, so I'm going into high school soon and my parents have been pressuring me into doing a sport/ club. thing is, I'm in all AP/honors classes and I'm afraid I'm going to be too overwhelmed. my parents aren't giving me a choice, so I basically have to do an extracurricular activity even though I've told them that I don't think I'll have time. any advice?
Hey lovebug!! Sorry for the late reply!!
First of all, welcome to high school!! It really isn’t as scary or as rigid as everyone makes it out to be, but it is important and your choices do start to carry more weight. While it’s commendable that you’re in all advanced classes, your parents aren’t wrong in wanting you to get involved with extra curricular activities. Extra curriculars are super important because 1) colleges look for more than high level courses and 2) (more importantly), they will give you a much needed break from your studies and provide you with a healthy way to pass your time.
I wouldn’t suggest taking up a sport because teams are a lot of dedication, dedication that you may not be able to afford due to your classes. I’d suggest joining a club or two, and joining clubs that you’d be able to have a decent level of interaction in so that you get that socialization factor. Check out clubs in your school like a volunteering based club, or the Red Cross club, or something like Model UN. If there isn’t a club that speaks to you, gather some friends and start one (though this is a lot more commitment than simply joining a club) for yourself.
I’m super proud of the fact that you’re in all these advanced classes and that you’re challenging yourself to work hard. But you have to remember to pace yourself and allow for little breaks in between! I hope this helped!!
