Sorry I've been a little quiet! I've had commissions since the start of the year and haven't had a chance to draw something I'm comfy to share here haha.

i really encourage people to read the actual article, but to be completely clear;

if you have a csp license now, you won’t have to pay for a subscription unless you want to upgrade to csp 2 in 2023. csp will no longer receive major updates after the release of csp 2. however, you cannot purchase csp once csp 2 comes out, so after 2023 all new csp licenses will be subscription-model only.

if you have csp now, you won’t need to stop using it !!!

this summary is amazingly incorrect

if you own csp 1, yes, you will still own csp 1. nothing about that will change. you will not have to pay a subscription fee.

you will be able to buy csp 2 for a one-time fee and receive fixes and stability updates

when csp 3 comes out you will also be able to buy that for a one-time fee and receive fixes and stability updates

they are not planning to move to 'subscription-model only' at any point, ever (according to this announcement I mean, I don't work for them, I don't read minds)

here is the part people are freaking out and getting confused about:

if you want early access to the new features that continue to be developed after the release of csp 2, you can opt-in to a subscription model - basically as if you were subbed to a patreon, you get the new shit ahead of the big version releases

all of those new features will be released as 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc. updates that will only be available via subscription

all of the 2.x updates will be included in csp 3.0, which you will be able to purchase forever for a one-time fee. you will just have to wait for the big release.

celsys have super fucked up how they communicated all of this, confused everyone, scared people, and pissed off their userbase. the bottom line is that you will be able to purchase every full release of CSP for a one-time fee and own it in perpetuity. the subscription models are an optional structure for people with money to burn who want new features as soon as they're ready.

the fact that the subscription models are insanely confusing and include a weird rip-off tier that's being presented as an option for people who want to 'upgrade' is so stupid. genuinely it's so fucking stupid they shot themselves in the dick here for literally no reason at all. they are so bad at comms it defies belief.

e: do not @ me about the stupid details of the stupid subscription models, I hate subscription models, I think this is badly executed, the point is you will not be forced to pay monthly or whatever. you can still just buy and own and use the art program.
