I now see why I struggled with showing my interests to my parents when I was a kid.
I’m listening to my cousin going on about Fortnite. The kid adores the game and is talking about the battle pass and he how hopes to get it later on today.
My mum just flatly says she doesn’t know what that means and has told him to hurry up as they go through the door, not giving my cousin any wiggle room to explain what it means. Fortnite is special to him, he wants to talk about it, he wants to engage but how can he when at that moment, the adult he’s talking to shuts him down?
Why can’t some people just take a damn minute to listen, REALLY listen to what kids are saying? He’ll now sit in the car in complete silence because his aunt isn’t interested in what he likes.
I’m not saying everyone has to be a fountain of knowledge for things like that. Hell, you don’t have to like what another person’s into but for the love of god, at least TRY and give it a go in understanding why it’s so important to that person.
“Oooh, that sounds neat! Tell me about it?” Is one of the best things you can say to a kid. (Or an author.) It matters less that you understand it than it does that they are allowed- are *encouraged*- to explain it
And also, if you’re truly lost:
“I’m not sure what that is, can you explain it to me?”
Kids LOVE getting to tell an adult something the adult doesn’t know. It makes them feel important because hey, we’re grownups! We know everything! Wait, we don’t? Wow! Let me tell you!
also if you’re like me you’ve had your family just up and say everything you like is stupid and that’s like. the worst possible thing please just fuckin listen to kids

im 22 and i still am affected by this
my parents used to (and still do) tell me that my interests weren’t important because they “weren’t real.” i used to really like certain books or bands or shows and when id tell them, specifically my mom, she’d just say things like “okay” and “let’s talk about something that’s actually important” so i hesitate to talk to them or even just my friends about things I’m interested when i know the disinterested looks i would get when i was in the middle of talking or when i’d get interrupted to talk about something that “actually mattered”. i guess as I’m thinking about this it was mostly my mom and i don’t want to say my mom was awful because she wasn’t really but these are just things that really negatively effected me and she (and other parents) probably didn’t even realize it
Listening is important because I still remember when my dad was driving me to my mom’s work and he let me talk all about panic at the disco and how the members have changed and he has even brought it up when i played patd like a year later and was like “this is that band that has just the one guy left because he was kind of a dick right” like my dad is a 58 year old maintenance mechanic that listens to old rock and goes hunting, but he listened to me when i talked about something he wasn’t interested in and paid attention and that literally means so much to me
Reblogging this again because I'm thinking about how often I start conversations w my parents with "I know you don't care about this but" before I tell them about any of my interests, usually it's in response to a question like why is there a star on this day of ur calendar
why, when I'm at home, does my hand just end up between my legs? Rewatched “Sprit: Stallion of the Cimarron” for the hundredth time and, like, why don’t people talk about this movie more??? Like it came out only a year after Shrek and that movie has a shit ton of sequels and yet no one ever talks about Spirit??? Like,
(1) It doesn’t glorify or romanticize colonialism. It is some real-ass shit.
(2) It has amazing art.
(3) The main human character is Native American.
(4) It doesn’t stereotype or generalize or dehumanize Native Americans.
(5) It’s about horses!!!!
If you haven’t seen or even heard of this movie, drop everything right the fuck now and go watch. NOW. GO. GO. GO. It’s just an all-around good movie that will give you so many feels.
Not forgetting the top amazing songs all brought to live by the amaing BRYAN ADAMS. The OSTs are gorgeous. And the end of the story always get me teary.
