You know what?

When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with somehow being perceived as cool. As we all were, probably. Of course, what I thought was cool was quite different to the mainstream, so other people never thought I was.

Now I am 35. I came out as ace a couple of years ago which has freed me from ANY sort of social cliche. I just stopped giving a fuck. And now I have friends, I go to 20 gigs a year plus festivals, I speak at Anti Nazi demos, and I have recently picked up juggling. I think I'm quite cool. If other people think so too, that's really nice, but if they don't, I just don't care anymore. Freeing, really.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

I have my issues with being aroace, as I'm sure many do, but ive also found that a very relaxing aspect of it for me has been that ive never felt the need to be attractive to anyone. I never got into makeup, I don't worry about how most of my body looks, I don't care about how the way I dress is perceived by others, simply because a lot of these things are often used as a means to attract others, and that's never been necessary for me. I dress for me, I do what I do for me, and if I'm happy with the way I look, then that's all that matters.
