Never Trust Critiques (Especially Those Online)
Ok. I’ve officially seen Ghostbusters. And to be quite frank, all the “critiques” who say it’s so horrible and ruined their childhood are just full of it. It’s exactly what you’d expect of a relaunch. Just gender swapped. It’s the same jokes, same pseudo-science set up, and quite frankly, the only part they changed on a major level was the building, and I personally thought that made it more believable, seeing as they were trying to bring it into the times.
They literally took the original Ghostbusters and brought it into the 21st century. So basically, if this movie ruined anyone’s childhood, by that logic, so did every Superman movie, Spiderman movie, Spiderman series, and Batman movie. I’d think, following that logic, you’d be used to your childhood not counting for jack by now.
So why’s this one such a “shocker”? Are boobs on a hero that isn’t constantly trying to seduce you every time they’re on the screen trigger you that much? Or was it the jokes you just didn’t understand because they weren’t coming from a place of familiarity? Women get small things stuck in their bras. Wow. The mysteries of the universe ruined by one joke. Or was it that you saw “Thor” was in the movie and you thought he’d play something more substantial than eye candy throughout the whole film? Disappointment? Welcome to the other half’s world.
So I guess this has little to do with the Ghostbusters and really to do with the people who can’t stand the idea of a woman playing the lead outside of a “chick flick”. Because you can watch the two films side by side and, plot wise, they’ll be pretty much the same. The acting was pretty spot on, too. The only character that ruined the mood for me was the Mayor’s assistant. (Bring it down, crazy. Bring it down.) And quite frankly, the relaunch actually stands up more as an action flick than its original.
How ‘bout some love for the advancement of CG? No? Can’t get over how uncomfortable you are? Welcome to how the other half lives.
