Ways to Define Leadership
Webster's Dictionary defines leadership as "the power or ability to lead other people," but for most people, there's a lot more to it than that. Â
Ask anyone what it means to be a leader, and you'll likely hear something unique every time. That's because everyone has his or her own idea of what leadership is, but not every boss leads a team the same way. Some people think leadership means guiding others to complete a particular task, while others believe it means motivating the members of your team to be their best selves. But while the definitions may vary, the general sentiments remain the same: Leaders are people who know how to achieve goals and inspire people along the way.
So how do you define leadership? Business News Daily asked business owners, managers and experts to explain what leadership means to them. Here are 33 different ways to define leadership.
Leadership is the ability to not only understand and utilize your innate talents, but to also effectively leverage the natural strengths of your team to accomplish the mission. There is no one-size fits all approach, answer key or formula to leadership. Leadership should be the humble, authentic expression of your unique personality in pursuit of bettering whatever environment you are in." – Katie Christy, founder, Activate Your Talent
"Leadership is about having a selfless heart and always being willing to reach out and lend a helping hand." – Bob Reina, CEO and founder, Talk Fusion
The Society is founded upon the core beliefs that one can achieve one’s dreams with the proper support and dedicated action, and that we accomplish more together than we would achieve alone. It began with founder Gary Tuerack’s vision of creating a community where like-minded, success-oriented individuals could come together to learn from and support each other. The National Society of Leadership and Success is the nation’s largest leadership society, which gathers the top students nominated by their colleges in order to determine and achieve their goals. In general, the Society currently numbers 700,380 members all over the country. The membership in the organization is important for the target market that includes students who want to develop their leadership skills, receive the leadership certificate, and reach the status of the top student leaders. The National Society of Leadership and Success was founded with the sole purpose of creating lasting positive change. Beginning with a handful of chapters, the Society now reaches hundreds of thousands of students at hundreds of chapters around the world. The Society encourages community action, volunteerism, personal growth and strong leadership from its chapters and members.
Power of Passion-- From a Student Perspective
Some students in college participate in student organizations for the purpose to gain some form of experience and to ultimately have something to put on their resumes. For some students, this may seem like an obligation, a chore, to perform such arduous tasks that such student organizations require or demand. For the others, they absolutely love and have interest in what they do, that they devote all their time and efforts into finding ways on how to make the club the absolute best and hope for it to reach its fullest potential. As someone who’s been both types of students, I have seen first hand how important being passionate in what you do is. Without passion, you perform the tasks that are assigned to you with zero to no interest. You treat it as a responsibility and duty that needs to be done. You are motivated by having something to put on your resume or by the fear of getting kicked off your position and having to face the embarrassment when your peers find out. You get just enough done to do the job. But why waste your time in the first place? Sure, you still gain experience. However, if possible, you should find something that you are actually interested in and passionate about. When you are passionate, it is in your best interest to make your organization grow, for others to be as passionate about your organization as you are. You go out of your way to come up with different ideas to try and implement, in hopes that that will benefit and improve the organization. People can see how enthusiastic you are about what you do and are inspired by you to join the organization. Because of how you try, you will be able to reap more benefits from your experience than doing just what is required of you. I have personally seen my club grow from thirty people to over two hundred members in two years due to the efforts of a group of passionate individuals. Reflecting on how that happened, I see that it was because of the amount of work the passionate board members put into the club to spread word about the club and make it fun and enjoyable for others. By comparing this experience to the grander scheme in life, we can observe how passion is a strong driving force in companies that can lead them to success. The more willing individuals are to do something, the more amount of effort is put into it.Â
On top of sharing his experiences with the students, Mark Rampolla advised them on how to build a better life and ultimately achieve your goals. For those that want to learn more about Mark Rampolla and his advice, he encourages those to read his book, The High-Hanging Fruit.
Students, teachers, and other individuals around the Riverside area had the opportunity to attend this event this past Thursday to hear about the experiences of Mark Rampolla, who was the past CEO of Zico Coconut Water! Like many other successful businessmen we hear about, he had a vision for the company. In his case, it was for Zico Coconut Water to one day be bought by the Coca Cola Company. With that goal in mind, all the companies efforts eventually paid off when Coca Cola officially bought Zico Coconut Water in 2013. He has since then been doing other things with his time. Attending his talk was especially helpful to the students, who had the chance to hear from someone firsthand about his success in the business world and how it came to be. It’s especially helpful for the students about the graduate and aspiring entrepreneurs to hear from someone who has actually been out in the business world and learn from his experience. Though there is not a specific formula for success, we can agree from hearing his advice that success follows a certain pattern. It starts with a passionate, curious individual that seeks to make a difference in the world by providing something unique and of value to society. Often times, an individual may not immediately know what they want to do in life, but they are willing to take the necessary risks and opportunities that come their way, which is exactly what Rampolla did. We have probably heard different renditions of his speech by other successful businessmen, and all of them are meant to motivate and encourage individuals to go out in the world and do something. People may be afraid to take risks and to do what’s familiar, but as we see, we should try to take the path less traveled and be unique.
