A Good Omen
âExcuse me,â she said politely, then quickly brought her coffee to a nearby table so she could take her call. As sheâd expected, it was Elva telling her she was late to meet up with her. Surprisingly the woman didnât seem irritated at all with Cadhlaâs lack of punctuality â in fact, she seemed almost pleased. That thought solidified her idea that her father and Elva sent her to this particular cafe on purpose. She hung up with a lighthearted goodbye and a quick promise to meet up as soon as her coffee was finished.Â
Cadhla glanced over at the woman â Mae, per her name tag â as she finished her cup, but instead of getting up and returning it she stayed in her seat a moment longer. She pulled a napkin over, dug a pen out of her satchel, and neatly penned her nickname and her cell-phone number. When she returned her cup she left the napkin as well and she gave Mae a shy smile. âIt has been lovely to meet you, miss. Thank-you for your hospitality.â
She watched the woman speak on the phone, privately marveling at just howâŠsoft she appeared. How kind. The thought hit her hard and she had to turn away for a moment to let herself, again, mourn how she had used to be. When she turned back around, the other woman was back at the counter.
Mae smiled a little at the miss. âYou can just call me Mae. âS the least I can do after threateninâ you.â She glanced down at the napkin for a moment before realizing what it was. What the whole thing was. Once she did her smile broadened. ââS been nice to meet you too. âM glad that you came in.â
A Good Omen
Mae laughed, the sound a tiny bit broken. âSorry. It gets to be second nature, after a while. To the point where if I let things lie for too long they could come back to bite me in the ass later.â She hoped that admitting this wouldnât scare the other woman away so soon.Â
When the song rang out she wrinkled her nose some and took a step back, ostensibly to get some cookies out of the oven. While she did so, she managed to keep an eye on this new person. This escaped pawn.

âThat might take a bit for me to get used to.â For a while the most important had been getting out. Getting back to Isaac. Now that she was in the world again and circling Isaac, she was at a bit of a loss for how to continue on. To find new goals.Â
Still her lips pulled up into a small smile at the mention of a new friend. There was cautious optimism in the gesture before the other womanâs question took that smile away. Mae cleared her throat then, succinctly, âI killed them before they could report back to Nikolai anâ Grace.â
"That is perfectly okay." Cadhla understood that feeling well enough. They didn't have the same exact experience but there was enough similarity that she could empathise.
I killed them before they could report back. Cadhla was startled by how simply, almost casually, the woman stated what she had done. Yet she couldn't blame her for protecting herself. "At least I know your threats weren't idle," she said with a wry smile, just as her pocket starting singing 'I've got a pocket full of sunshine'. "Oh! That's probably Elva."

A Good Omen
wintermae:Â
âI didnât thinkâŠI didnâtâŠâ Her words faltered as she worked to process this. It had almost seemed easier to think of herself as an island of sorts. Just her in her experiences after theyâd helped her escape. And now, in the course of two coffees, that had changed entirely.
It took a moment but once she let herself relax she nodded slowly. âIâd thought maybe you wereâŠAn enforcer or somethinâ. Theyâd come close to findinâ me before in a way that wasâŠeerily close to this.â
âYou are not alone,â she told her gently. âYou have people who care about you and want to see you safe.â Now that number was bigger. Cadhla didnât even properly know the woman but she had a strange feeling she would be seeing a lot more of her.
âNope! Definitely not an enforcer, but maybe...well, maybe a new friend.â Cadhla took another few sips of her coffee, happy it wasnât cooled yet. âI am sorry they almost found you before. May I ask? How did you avoid them?â
Headcanon
Cadhla starts out speaking without contractions because that was a little amusement of her scientist motherâs; if Cadhla or her twin Caoimhe used contractions they were punished. So eventually it became habit not to. So the more comfortable Cadhla gets with a person, the less formal her speech is.

âOh.â Hearing that made her feel. What it was, she still couldnât concretely name. But it was good, she knew that much.âI didnât know that theyâŠknew where I was.â Mae gestured to the building around them in an almost thoughtless manner. After a moment she blanched. âThey wanted you safe anâ I threatened to kill you!â
She didnât think Kirk and Elva still cared enough to keep tabs? Unimaginable. They would never forget someone they helped. âTheir job is not over as soon as they get someone out.â Her tone was calm, kind. âThey truly do care. AndâŠyou know, if you ever need them â for anything â they will be there for you.â
Cadhla couldnât help but giggle when the woman brought up the death threats that had originally been upsetting and discouraging. âPlease do not worry about that. I forgive you, and there is no reason for them to be angry with you for simply trying to protect yourself.â
A Good Omen
Cadhla was quiet, watching the woman in her silent struggle. The urge to reach out was strong but she tamped it down and was grateful for it when the woman finally spoke again. A piece of the puzzle snapped into place and she tipped her head, smiling slightly. âI have a feeling you are why they recommended this place to me,â she informed the lady calmly.Â
âShall I say hello to them for you?â
Mae resisted the urge to sigh, fingers grazing over the old scars in an almost comforting manner. When the other woman mentioned that she was the reason she was here, her eyes widened some. Surprise slipped over the storm in her features.Â
âThey wanted you to come here?â
The little look of surprise on the woman's face made Cadhla's little smile bloom into a grin. "Yes," she confirmed. "It was the very first on their list of safe places to go. This is my first time adventuring out on my own, so they wanted things to go smoothly." She took a sip of her coffee and sighed. It was so good.
"Plus," she added. "They really must like you."
