My grandma’s on and off again boyfriend that she cheated on grandpa with died today.
RIP to Nana’s side piece. Though they never married, Grandpa died in September and she brought his long term competition to Thanksgiving that year.
Grandma and Grandpa had a shotgun wedding when Grandma was 19. Grandpa went off to Vietnam which left her, a severely mentally young mother, alone. Never heard a complaint about her side piece Jeff. He seemed to make her happy and for that I salute him.
I’m an only child so I have to discuss sensitive family drama with my 38,000 followers instead.
My grandmother broke up w my grandfather through a letter and he just pretended to have never read it. They got married and had three kids.
My grandmother confessed on her death bed that:
Her and Grandpa were in a relationship with their best friends
The four of them have been in a relationship since they were teenagers
They flipped a bottle cap to see which girl the boys would marry
Their children could have either man as their biological father but their biological mother is the mum that raised them
The past two weeks has been chaos since her confession 😂

The casting is as follows:
Kirk is Nanki-Poo. Now, I know he's not a himbo but he can play one very well. And this way, he gets to be the hero but also the crew get to laugh at him (second trombone, "imperfect ablutioner"). And I think "to your humours changing/I tune my supple song" reflects Kirk's actual modus operandi of altering his behaviour to adapt to the crisis of the week.
Uhura is Yum-Yum. We know she can sing well, which is essential to pull off "The sun whose rays...". Also, she is beautiful — and has the required "raven hair". Now it might seem unfortunate to have her and Kirk do the kissing song (after what happened in Plato's Stepchildren) but I think it will let them work through that trauma by doing it on their own terms.
Scotty is Pooh-Bah. Self evident. He would have such fun with this role.
Chekov is Pish-Tush. Pish-Tush is self-centred and doesn't mind being irritating. Q.E.D.
Chapel is Pitti-Sing: ship's nurse cheerfully singing about cutting through cervical vertebrae = funny.
Rand is Peep-Bo. I can see her and Uhura and Chapel having a great time as the Three Little Maids.
Sulu is the Mikado. He's Japanese. He's got that deep George Takei bass voice. He would ham it up like anything and have a marvellous time lording it over everybody.
and here's where it gets REALLY interesting (to me)...
McCoy is Ko-Ko (the Lord High Executioner): it's perfect. He's born to be a comic baritone. He would write his own version of the Little List based around the Enterprise and everyone would be in stitches. He would bounce off Scotty and Chapel and Kirk in all their interactions. He would even have the highly appropriate sincere line "I can't kill anybody!"
Spock is Katisha and he completely steals the show. With his famously devilish looks, he easily plays the role of the villain that the audience loves to hate... and then he turns it around with an incredibly sensitive rendering of "Hearts do not break" and suddenly the audience is weeping for him.
And of COURSE the ultimate pairing up of Spock and McCoy's characters is hilarious for the crew. "There's Beauty in the Bellow of the Blast" has real spones energy (to me, anyway). And if I may be permitted to include an actual spones moment at the end, I propose that at the very end of the show, when the "couples" are taking their bows, Katisha (Spock) unexpectedly kisses Ko-Ko (McCoy), which did NOT happen at the rehearsals, and it leads to much catcalling from the crew and McCoy goes on wild face journey from shock to confusion to a dazed grin :)
[and I've just checked my copy of the script and found this line from Ko-Ko: "True it is that, under a poor mask of disgust, I have endeavoured to conceal a passion whose inner fires are broiling the soul within me!" ... tell me that's not spones]
I've been saying for literally years that I will illustrate all this some day... I am trying to get better at drawing the characters first... one day it will happen. I hope.
Oh I'm so glad I asked, I love this! It's so detailed. I just rewatched the Mikado a couple of months ago (I always watch the one recorded production I grew up watching with my grandma, I should check out another one sometime...) and I can absolutely see this in my head. Would love to see it with my eyes if you ever do illustrate it!
getting into linguistics sucks because you will start listening to your friends' conversations thinking "wow! your vowels are fascinating!" but obviously you can never tell them this because you'll sound like a madman. and god forbid you ever meet a non-native speaker, because you'll start looking like a racist pervert every time they use non-standard grammar.
i think its a lil sad how often people will like restrain themselves from exploring new identities and hobbies because they don't want it to be an "embarrassing phase" because honestly i think its way cooler to have a diverse and varied lifestyle that you can look back on and say "omg i used to love doing that!" and apply those skills and interests to something else.
leaving home again in two days after being here for a month. tonight after dinner my mom decided to ask me "are you really just not political at all, or do you just have different views that you don't want to talk about with us?"
and I was like. well I have different views, yeah.
and she wanted to talk about it. and I was like, okay, well, I don't know what to talk about.
and the two things we ended up talking about, the things she brought up, were 1) trans people in sports. then she said she thinks being trans is a mental illness. I didn't really think she felt that way, I know we've had conversations in the past, but every time whatever ground I've gained gets swept away by all the other sources of information ("information") she takes in. anyway we had a pretty calm conversation.
and 2) ICE detention centers. which she says are very nice and that all 'news' about the poor conditions is 'propaganda' from the Democrats. Then she said that all / a lot of the protests were by paid actors. She is unshakably convinced of this.
Basically, she thinks I'm buying into lies, and I think she is. And neither of us are sitting there doing the research mid-conversation. which. I'd like to. If we could stay calm about it. Maybe I will finally actually do what I've been thinking of and start fact checking when she posts conservative content on Facebook.
But I am. Still. Getting past needing my mom's approval. I don't want her to be mad at me or disagree with me. I don't know if I'll ever really be strong enough to handle it. I've just been avoiding it. I can barely handle when she's angry at other people. I hate when she yells. She gets like, a little road rage, calls someone in a car who can't hear her a rude name, and I freeze up in the passenger seat. I just fucking want her to be happy. I do what I can. She's got my brothers and my dad to worry about and it often feels like I'm the only one listening to her. So it's hard to just say "I'm an adult, she's an adult, we can do our own thing and if she's mad at me it doesn't have to affect me." Also, like... I don't really live in a permanent situation, I still come home to my parents' house. I don't really think she'd ever like, actually not welcome me home, but I know I could feel unwelcome. AND I know that it would hurt her to be like that!
anyway. we only even touched on two subjects. there are so many more and of course they're all connected and of course we have completely opposed views on all of them. except she has SUCH apparently unshakeable convictions while I have like. a lot of room for the information I know I don't have. but I am generally against basically everything she says.
anyway this is basically a vent post but like. advice would be welcome.

watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.
sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.
society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.
turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.
my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.
also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.
ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.

- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.
