The Wrong Man // Benjy and Reg // Aug. 11
It felt, to Benjy, as though he were a cat, batting at a particularly ill equipped mouse. It was an uncomfortable feeling, made even more so when the boy’s cheeks flushed and his hair fell over his eyes, making him look all of fifteen. What a boy like that wanted with Evan Rosier was probably the greatest mystery that Benjy had ever encountered, but then again, he had never understood why anyone would want Rosier for anything. Rather than toy with the mouse any further, Benjy suddenly wanted to protect him. There was no way the younger Black understood what he was getting himself into. Even Regulus’ attempts to pull himself up and look as adult as possible, did nothing to assuage Benjy’s concern.
“I’m afraid he didn’t,” Benjy answered. “And I find it’s not usually the best idea to wait for his return, when doing anything important.”
A subtle way of saying Evan made a habit of dicking off, whenever he felt like it. Benjy could feel the tension rising in him, just talking about the younger Ravenclaw.
“Perhaps I could forward the message on?”
The sigh of disappointment that left Regulus’s lips was audible, although quiet. He accepted his defeat with a small roll to his eyes, hidden behind half-closed lids. “No… Thank you, that won’t be necessary. But, uhh – Would you mind letting him know that Mister Black, from the Department of Magical Law, stopped by?”
It took all the strength of his will not to wrinkle his nose at the distaste of using such formalities. His free hand reached idly up and scratched at the back of his head, chin tilted down as he avoided Benjy’s stare. Many a time had Regulus requested to tone down the stilted politesse in their interactions to Evan, who still addressed his owls to Mister Black and used his most proper register even when they lay tangled in the sheets. How unnatural it felt to be using it now; how very much like home.
He padded over to the desk, running a finger over the notches in the wicker on the picnic basket lid, and then murmured a charm that encased the whole thing in a light frost. Better not let it get cold, Regulus thought, now realizing he would not be able to take the basket with him as he went. The charm seemed to match the air of the room quite appropriately. Although their eyes did not meet, Regulus was acutely aware of the other man’s presence, the stiffness to his features that seemed to beg him to leave. And perhaps he should have, for that would have been the polite thing to do. But curiosity, not fear or etiquette, ruled his mind today. This was his first foray into the private world of Evan’s work life, and he was going to grasp onto it as long as he could.
(Besides, the encounter was proving to be excellent practice for not dashing off in fright every time he entered a strange office at the Ministry.)
“I know it’s none of my business,” he started up again after a period of silence, “but you seem a little troubled? Mister… Sorry, I didn’t catch your name?”
“Fenwick. Benjy Fenwick,” Benjy replied, surprised to see the boy lingering, rather than running off, as he had expected. There was perhaps more of Sirius in this boy than Benjy had given him credit for. He could see that determination in his eyes, even if it was hesitant.
“And I’m afraid troubled isn’t exactly the word I would use. Now it’s me not minding my business, but you don’t seem like the kind of person who would have dealings with Evan Rosier. Some days I’m shocked that I have dealings with him.”
In fact Benjy had done almost everything in his power to get rid of Rosier, ever since the younger man had been foisted upon him. Unfortunately, his own reputation was one of brilliance mixed with unreliability. He had none of the political pull that Evan did.
Not For The First Time || Benjy & Damian || August 9th, 1978
The weary tone of his voice, and the pleading look in his eyes was too much for Damian. That combination was all too familiar to Damian and he knew where it could lead. Slowly his head dipped towards the man below him, eyes ghosting from pools of blue to pink lips, eyes threatening to flutter closed when Damian shook himself free from the spell. Still with careful movements he lifted his head and stared off at the dingy painting on the wall across from them. This was dangerous. To be alone with Benjy for too long was never a good idea, and his mind muddled by sleep did not help matters.
“My home.” He said softly with a nod, and though he did not look down at the other man he still pulled his arm back in close again, holding Benjy close against his body still.
If the situation was different, if their paths did not cross every time Benjy was out of his mind on one thing or another, perhaps Damian would not have pulled back like he had done just now. That he was married was of little concern to Damian, not with the arrangement between himself and Karen, but it was wrong to cross that line with his friend when he was not in a right state of mind.
“My home. Come stay with me, Benjy.” He whispered. “Are you well enough for side-along?” He asked, his mind already starting to focus on his living room back home.
Damian’s movement belied his self-control, but Benjy’s mind could fill in the memory of how it would feel to be kissed by the man next to him. Soft, tender lips brushing over his own, filling him with a warmth that always seemed to be absent when Damian wasn’t nearby. Stronger hands holding him gently, framing his face to prolong the embrace, making it feel as though it would never end and they could go on forever. With his eyes closed, Benjy could feel it as though it was all recent and real, and could forget the pain that came with the fact that it wasn’t.
Still, it was enough that Benjy could find his place at Damian’s side, and that he would have him in some way for at least one more night. He nodded gently, both accepting the invitation and answering the question. He’d become used to side alongs under some acutely non-sober conditions, a side effect of the life style he was leading. Benjy braced himself against his friend, taking a deep breath before he started to feel the pull. His stomach lurched wildly, threatening to relieve him of what little he had eaten that day. Only the breeze on his face kept him intact. In a thankfully short time, Benjy found his feet on the floor of Damian’s living room. It was as though the sudden return to solid ground had caused his body to rebel again, and he teetered.
“Need to... sit. Or fall,” he said weakly, threatening to do just that. He wasn’t quite together enough to wonder the answer to questions such as Karen’s current whereabouts, but luckily his voice wouldn’t have been loud enough to be heard in a church, never mind through house walls.

The Wrong Man // Benjy and Reg // Aug. 11
“Huh??” His heart leapt, the absurdity of the question having thrown him slightly off guard. He took a quick step back and turned his head to look at the basket, as if to check for a name. As he did so, he allowed a longer section of his hair to fall in front of his face. He could feel his cheeks begin to warm, the misfortune of his pallid complexion being that his emotional responses could so often be read from the color in his face.
“Doubtful. Not my place to know, though, I’m just the messenger.”
With a flick of his wand, he wafted the picnic basket over to Evan’s desk; he pressed the back of his free hand, almost unconsciously, to his cheek to cool the skin. His eyes followed the path of the basket, a bit of a forlorn slant to them. He had so been looking forward to this break, to the few stolen minutes they would have together in celebration of the meeting Regulus had been fretting about all week. And to add to the disappointment, he had now found himself in the rather unfortunate position of having to explain his presence to this sullen looking man whom, until two minutes ago, he had no idea existed. Flicking the hair away from his face, Regulus forced himself to stand up straighter, his eyes at last meeting the man’s gaze.
“Did he say? When he’d be back? I have another message for him. It’s – it’s rather urgent.”
It felt, to Benjy, as though he were a cat, batting at a particularly ill equipped mouse. It was an uncomfortable feeling, made even more so when the boy’s cheeks flushed and his hair fell over his eyes, making him look all of fifteen. If I die young, bury me in satin Lay me down on a bed of roses Sink me in the river at dawn Send me away with the words of a love song The sharp knife of a short life, oh well I've had just enough time And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger, I've never known the lovin' of a man But it sure felt nice when he was holdin' my hand

You can forgive, but you must never forget.
Not For The First Time || Benjy & Damian || August 9th, 1978
With the few gargled sips from Benjy, Damian let out a soft sigh of relief, pleased that his friend was being reasonable. Damian had lost count of how many times he had come to fetch his best friend, each time adding a little more to the growing crack in his heart. Most times Benjy was pleased to see him, and Damian relieved to find him alive, but there had been times when their reunions were far less pleasant.
Damian frowned at the sour memories that now flooded his mind. Memories of unkind words thrown back and forth in seedy bars and back alleyways that Damian wished he could forget. Just as quickly as these thoughts entered they were washed away as Benjy’s head rolled back and Damian’s blue eyes locked onto Benjy’s ow.
Damian Smiled.
How could he not smile when confronted with those beautiful eyes?
Damian’s eyes flicked up to the door the separated them from the rest of the bar, checking to see who was watching. Reassured they were alone, Damian allowed himself to lean into the warm hand at his cheek, blushing at the tickle of fingers across his skin. “Don’t worry about that.” He tried to reassure, Benjy with a gentle shake of his head. “I’m just glad to see you.” It was mostly the truth, at least it was far enough away from a lie that Damian felt comfortable saying it out loud.
The real truth was that Damian wished they could have met under better circumstances. It tore at Damian that his closest friend, his childhood confidant, would spend every holiday in this sort of state. But what hurt more was the fact that is was all Damian’s fault.
“Spending the night with you is enough of a present for me, Benjy.”
Between the late hour and the tainted blood in his system, everything in the room seemed a bit blurred around the edges to Benjy, as if he were viewing the world through a fogged glass. It was what he had been looking for; a break in the painful clarity of his daily experience. Damian was the only thing that seemed clear in that moment, the closeness of his eyes, his lips, making him seem surreal. It was only the touch between them that help ground it all for Benjy. The press of Damian’s cheek against his palm was the first real human contact he’d had in weeks, putting any other touch to shame and making an equal amount of shame rise inside Benjy. How could something so pure care for something so tainted? Benjy wished he had the strength to resist, to send Damian back to better things, but he didn’t.
“They’re kicking me out of here,” he said, absent mindedly, seeming to realize it for the first time, even as it left his lips.
“Oh... will you take me home? Take me somewhere, Da.”
The old school nickname rolled off of Benjy’s tongue, pulled from the parts of him that were still innocent, the parts of him that he had left behind at Hogwarts so many years ago.
“My home, your home...”
The corners of his mouth curled up slightly, even though the pain was clear in his eyes.
“Stay with me?”
