That sounds better than a date, honestly. But what about Dick? You two should be together, Valentine’s Day is important. He’ll want to be with you the whole day, I bet, and I don’t want to take you away from him.
Honestly? Dick and I haven’t spent a whole Valentines’ together in a very, very long time. Do me a favor and check the work schedule when you get back to the station, chances are, my father has him working the e n t i r e day.

“I will remember.” Kori exclaimed happily like a child. “People here are very talkative… well, most.” She thought to Rachel Raven and a small frown pulled at the corners of her lips. “I have not had trouble gaining help, but I do wish to know more. It seems a place that has much in it.” She made a noise of agreement, but her mind was wandering at the idea of a father to meet. She was so desperate for a family, the one she had lost long ago with her planet, that any mention of it brought a longing sorrow that made her bones feel lead heavy and her skin feel too tight. “I am only trying to get to know the area. I’ve only just moved here.”
“Gotham is...a lot to take in at first, but after a while you seem to get the hang of everything.” She let out a soft noise of surprise at the mention of Kory being new in town, “Any reason as to why you moved here?--Ah, not that the city isn’t, well, i n t e r e s t i n g to live in, but most nice people don’t decide that Gotham City is the place to be.” Barbara racked her brain for reasons--school? job? good ol’ fashioned hero-ing? She mulled over the last one a bit, remembering the sudden influx of heroes to her hometown. Could Kory be--hm. “Well it’s best to take note that Amusement Mile is only, er, remotely approachable during the day. Try to avoid it altogether at night if you can.”

I -—— [ a strangled sound squeaked out of her mouth before one hand clapped over her lips to prevent any more embarrassing noises ] Barbara, thank you. Oh gosh, honey, I love you so much. C’mere. [ eyes welling up, she reached out one hand towards the other woman, wriggling her fingers emphatically ]
[she took hold of her friend’s outstretched hand, laughing softly] No need to thank me for pointing out the truth. [she paused, thinking for a moment] How about, if you can’t find another spectacular date--using the term lightly--for Valentine’s day, you, me, and whomever else come over to my apartment for drinks, movies, pizza and any other cliché girls’ sleepover activities you can think of?

Molly, slumped over the back of an office chair, perked up at the mention of her infamy. “Molly Eden, if I’m who you’re talking about. Hero extrodinary no matter what Penny Bishop or Dick Grayson say about it.” She smiled brightly, her bad mood forgotten at the prospect of talking about herself.
“Wait, did you say Gordon? As in Grayson’s girlfriend. Because I have to say, on a cool scale of Dick Grayson to Batgirl, that drops you down just a few notches.” She pointed towards his empty desk, a half hearted looked of disappointment. Molly watched the woman with her plus one ticket, shrugging and putting on her best nonchalant face. “Oh, yeah, yeah! I’m fine. Just want to play some volleyball. Gonna win the nationals ”
She brought a hand to her mouth and chuckled softly, “I believe you.” Barbara may or may not have taken a look into the young girl’s file when Dick wasn’t looking after hearing about her. Molly reminded Babs of herself, to be honest, when she was younger--so determined to prove herself to the guys upstairs that she can do anything they can do; so full of the need to do good for the greater good--which is why it seemed so bizarre to hear through the GCPD grapevine about this sixteen year old girl with red hair and a fiery disposition for getting into fights. “Gordon as in Police Commissioner Gordon, but yes, Grayson’s girlfriend too,” Barbara laughed wholeheartedly this time, at multiple things that the girl said, “I’m sorry about that. But he’s kind of a dork, and I love him for it.”
She looked over the ticket in her hand, taking note of the time and place, “Then I’ll be there.”

“Maybe I wanted you to hear me mocking you oh great and powerful Oracle, ever think of that??” he retorted sardonically. Rolling his eyes he heard the sound of sirens once more and was again on the move. “I didn’t know my way around archery no, I did know my way around my parents credit it card though.”
He laughed and shook his head. “Captain Cold over the Joker any day.”
“Well now you’re just being mean, Oliver,” she shook her head, smiling. Barbara brought her hands to the keyboard again to answer the little blip on her screen, “And here I was, so generous and ready to tell you that there’s a suspicious amount of activity down by the docks at two in the morning, but I guess I could just tell Speedy or Kid Flash about it instead.” She pulled up a security feed of the docks, “Looks like five hostiles, three of them armed--possibly waiting for a pick up.” She reached over for a cup of coffee she had sitting on her desk, “So little Ollie is going to shop ‘til he drops? Adorable.”
“No doubt about that,” she toasted in agreement.

[ she laughed, slowly slipping into a state of mind she didn’t allow herself to enter very often for fear she might not return ] Keep up with what? A workaholic cop who collects cats because she can’t have kids?
Keep up with someone so dedicated to everything she comes across; keep up with someone so beautiful sometimes it makes me cry looking at you; keep up with someone so clever that Ed sees you as practically equal; keep up with someone so a m a z i n g of a person as you. [she reaches for her friend’s hand and smiles softly at her] You deserve someone who sees all of that in you and more, regardless of any flaws that you may think keep you from being eligible bachelorette number one.

Words came at her and Kori wondered how people kept them all straight. Since coming to Earth, one thing she found odd were all the languages on one planet and English was by far one of the more confusing. “I…. understand. I believe that I understand.” Certainly coming to a new place was not her best idea, but Kori needed something new. It wouldn’t take long to relearn social norms and adapt tot he city as she had with places before. this was merely another place that needed to be helped, in a sense, and that comforted her to a degree. “Barbara.” The name weighed heavy on her tongue and the syllables rolled nicely. “I like it.” The woman decided with a nod. “It is very nice to meet you, Barbara. Where are you taking this means of transportation, if you do not mind me asking.”
“If anything all you need to know is that you know which buttons to press, but I’m sure if you get into any trouble with it, you won’t have any issues getting someone to help,” she smiled up at her, putting her hand back into her lap. Barbara led them through the gates and down to the platforms where they waited. “I’m going to meet my father for lunch, he works at the Police Department around there,” she told Kory. “Why are you going to Amusement Mile? Or are you going to someplace around there?

What? No, that’s ridiculous, I’d never ask you two to do something like that. I just -——
——- I don’t understand why I can’t meet anybody. It’s like like I’ve been trying awfully hard since, well. Since high school. But still. [ her bright, energetic smile faltered for a moment ]
Well the offer stands on the table, Penn. Dick and I would go through Hell fire for you, you know deep in your heart that’s true. [she leaned back in her chair] Maybe they’re all so vastly intimidated by you, which by then means that they’re no good anyway. You need someone--deserve someone who can keep up.
officerpenelope:
[ as she pulled away from the hug, Penelope’s face flushed a color akin to the bright red of the other woman’s hair ] If your father happens to find a box of candy hearts from a secret admirer, I don’t know anything about it and it certainly wasn’t me. [ she glanced around before pulling up the nearest chair, settling down and crossing her legs ] My day is going great, actually! Yeah, I kind of already had some of the candy and a lot of ice cream and really sweet coffee, but it’s only because I was supposed to have a date last night and he changed his number, so. Yeah, I’m fine. I’ve got a whole, nice big bag of candy hearts.
Right. [she stretched out the vowel, giving the woman a sly smile, opening the bag and taking a few for herself] I repeat, oh my God, Pen! [she paused before lowering her voice and leaning forward with a light teasing tone] Do you want me to track him down for you? Send Dick to his address in uniform to freak him out a little? I have the computer knowledge to do that you know, my degree isn’t just there to look pretty. And I would offer you coffee or tea but I don’t think I can handle even more hyper you. Not that I don’t love you.
officerpenelope:
[ she pokes one finger into the bag for emphasis, putting on her best m o m face ] Just make sure you share with Dick and your father, okay? And hi, sweetheart. [ she leans down to wrap her arms around Barbara in a late greeting ]
Like you didn’t already secretly give my dad a smaller bag and Dick hasn’t already found your bag. [she lets out a small noise of surprise at the hug before hugging her back] Hi, honey. Sit down, tell me how your day was, tell me how many candies you ate before you came in.

Happy almost Valentine’s Day! [ she sets down a large bag of candy hearts and sighs happily, dusting off her hands ] Those are for you. I have another bag at home for myself.
[startled at the sudden drop of a heavy bag on the counter, she looks up at the cop with an eyebrow raised] Oh my God?
Moving back, Koriand’r nodded enthusiastically. “I would appreciate this very much.” Fishing through her pockets, the Tamaranean produced a few crumpled bills and showed them proudly to the woman. “I have this. Would it be enough for admission onto the train?” Her tone was a mixture of uncertainty and hopefulness as she waited for a response. This odd place was still growing on her, still so hard to navigate, and any extra help would mean the world to Kori. “Oh! I am very sorry for being so rude. I am called Kory Anders.”
Barbara looked down at the money in the girl’s hands and started picking at the bills for what the trip cost, and then wheeled over to the pass machine, gesturing her over to watch as she explained. “For every trip, it’s a little over two dollars, so you can just input your money in here,” she inserted the bills and pushed a few buttons on the screen. “Then you press these options...and once you press ‘I’m finished’, you get this little card,” Babs took the card that popped out of the machine and handed it to the other girl, “And then you just walk up to those gates over there, place the card on the pad and once you hear a beep you can walk through and you’re on your way.” She started wheeling over to the gates, going slow to make sure the girl followed and smiled at her introduction, “Nice to meet you, I’m Barbara. Barbara Gordon.” She held out her hand for Kory instinctively.

He mimicked her under his breath in a whiny tone. “Green Beans are an excellent source of vitamin C” he said, to himself more than to her, and in that moment he was the most mature super hero out there. “I was not hated as a child, neglected yes, but showered with inconsistent affection and enough money to attempt to fill the void that my parent’s poor skills at raising me left.” He shrugged once more as the bad guy scarpered. “8 year old me is plotting both of our downfalls, just you wait.”
He laughed. “Well good for them, maybe they should convert. I’ve always thought that Captain Cold would make a good good guy.”
“You know, the perk of being the greatest computer hacker of, like, all time, is that I can hear everything that goes through your comm regardless if you want me to hear it or not,” she laughed, picturing him decked in his gear with his bow in hand and a child’s pout on his face. “I’m sure we can handle 8-year-old Ollie. You didn’t know your way around archery yet, right?”
“Mmf, wouldn’t say that, Green Bean, anti-heroes are the most wish-washy people I’ve ever encountered,” she tucked a stray hair behind her ear. “Not my favorite.”
Excitement welled beneath the surface and, thinking nothing of personal space or boundaries, Kori threw her arms around the woman after bending down. “Oh, thank you! I was sure that I would have to wander and I would only become hopelessly lost.” At the word subway, the woman tried to hide her confusions, but as she kept rolling it over and over in her mind, the correlation became clear. “I will accompany you, yes. That would be most wondrous and we may speak about your thoughts on this city.”
“ —Oh!” she exclaimed, taken off guard. Slowly, Barbara wrapped her own arms around the girl, eyeing around the station at the other patrons. “No problem, really. Uh...” She patted her back a few times before pulling back slightly, “Okay, well the next train is in a minute, so we should probably get to that. I could teach you how to use the train system on the way, too.”
— &. ) “I do not understand the underground bus. I have never taken it before. It reminds me of a creature that would swallow one up and spits them out wherever it pleases.” With mild distress, the girl looked around, vainly hoping to find a familiar landmark. Gotham was new and exciting and exceedingly hard to navigate. If she could fly over the city and map it in aerials, life would be easier, but for now she was simply the tourist: Kory Anders. “Could you, perhaps, p l e a s e tell me how far is it to the… the…” Dark eyes scanned down to the smudged writing on her palm —- squinting and straining —- as she brokenly pronounced “am-use-me-ent mile”.
Barbara almost never traveled across the city without her van (or Wally when he can’t help it), but her van was at the mechanics for a check up and an oil change and the speedster was back in Central City for the weekend, leaving her to rely on public transportation. Having been raised in the city and graced with a photographic memory, she knew every street and avenue of Gotham like the back of her hand, making the travel from the Clocktower to her dad’s office easy; even in a wheelchair. Others, like the girl in front of her, were not so lucky. Gotham is a maze, Babs gets that, and looking at the other woman--the other extremely tall, extremely gorgeous woman, she was a bit clueless, like a rat thrown into some scientists experiment. “Yes of course,” Barbara said to her, “it should be about a five-minute ride on the subway--actually, I’m headed around there right now on the same train line.”
Leaping from the top of a building, Ollie allowed the momentum to carry him across the gap and across to the next rooftop, he didn’t stop running and soon he was vaulting another gap between buildings. “Green Beans are for eating Oracle, not for superhero names, besides apart from the colour they have nothing in common with my work and to make things worse I always hated them as a child.”
“I’ll consider it, but I can tell you now that 8 year old Ollie is very disappointed with what I’m doing, just something you should bear in mind, you’re breaking the heart of a now non existent eight year old.” Reaching into his quiver he pulled out a trick arrow of his own design, a simple grapnel arrow but it still looked pretty cool. At least he thought so. Firing he watched it hit its target perfectly and latch onto the corner of a building, zipping down it quickly he landed on the floor and kept going. He was incredibly fit and could run like this for a while. He could’ve climbed down the building, but where was the fun in that right?
“I’m disappointed to be honest, I was hoping for something more worthy.” He smiled to himself as he turned the corner and saw a youth fiddling with a SUV, “hey kid!” he shouted pulling an arrow out and firing it perfectly so it knocked his tools out of his hand, he could see the EMP lying near by, “people pay a lot of money for those cars, don’t scuff the paint work, that is rude.”
She scoffed, the end of it turning into a laugh, “Green Beans are an excellent source of vitamin C and you’re obviously being a bit sour about this. And, I have to ask, were you hated as a child? Because that could be two for two.” Barbara raised both her hands off the computer in a small gesture of surrender, as if he could see her. “Your consideration is all I need, and I’m sure 8-year-old Ollie will get over it.”
She watched him from her monitors, shrugging to no one. “The big-time villains are unusually quiet--which is never a good thing, to be honest--but unless you want to scope out every nook and cranny of Gotham, be my guest. Also, the Big Guy is out like every night, not to mention the rest of you that have decided to bless our wonderful city, so I’m sure if anything, they’re quaking in their boots.”
“The experience section isn’t what I’m worried about.” She mumbled under her breath. It’s the questions like schooling and what type of skills she had that worried her. Currently, all she was good for was cooking, using Mathieu for free rides, and waking up in dark alleys. All wonderful traits for a librarian to have.
As Eva followed the woman to the back, she pondered her options. She needed a job. Fact. The chances of her getting offered another legal one. Low. Therefore, this was her best option. If she told the woman the truth, she would end back up in Arkham, and if she lied…it wouldn’t be fair to the lady who was standing here trying to give her chance. Some people make you want to do the right thing, the stranger in front of here was one of them. That left only one option a half-lie. Lovely.
“If I tell you, you can’t tell anyone, at all. I need you to promise me that, please?” Eva paused, the word halted in her throat. It lay at the tip of her tongue. One word, four syllables. Nothing to be afraid of, Pallos. Except maybe there was, she had spent years and years, fighting off this damn label until all that was left was a bitter girl. It was what taught her that words had power, but…we all have to make sacrifices, right⁇ “I’m s c h i z o p h r e n i c.”
She sensed the young girl’s wariness,and continued to try to reassure her. The library was always understaffed, today really being the crux of it when she had to send her staff home early because they all had the flu and couldn’t call in some of the college students that usually volunteer here because of finals and holiday breaks, Barbara couldn’t afford to lose another pair of hands. “Well like I mentioned, we can deal with the other parts later. And together.”
Barbara nodded, noting the seriousness of her tone of voice. “I promise, yes.” She listened to the girl’s hesitant reply and understood the reason why she was so withholding. Mental illness was so stigmatized in the general public that it was--if anything--a condemnation from society to anyone who suffered from one. Barbara took a look at the other girl and tried to think of what to do.
“I’ll have to ask then, are you taking medication to treat it? Or even going to any therapies?” Her psychology background started to kick in, “If not, I can possibly get in contact with a colleague who can get you a prescription of Clozapine or--you’re not taking antidepressants, are you? You know what, I can even probably get you an appointment with my colleague and she can get you better suited?” Barbara pursed her lips, wondering if she had overwhelmed her. “I’m sorry, you don’t have to be afraid--it’s just--I want you to know that it’s okay. That all of this, is okay.” And it is. And Barbara hoped the girl understood.
