OK so this is hella late and should’ve been posted this time last month.
First of all sorry for the lack of activity. I run my own RP and that takes up a lot of time and on top of that my grandmother passed away and then I was on holiday and at Reading festival. But those aren’t actually excuses because I could’ve gotten on but I just didn’t and that was a shitty as hell thing to do.
I miss all of you guys a lot and I hope to all hell this group does not die.
“You know, the perk of being the greatest computer hacker of, like, all time, is that I can hear everything that goes through your comm regardless if you want me to hear it or not,” she laughed, picturing him decked in his gear with his bow in hand and a child’s pout on his face. “I’m sure we can handle 8-year-old Ollie. You didn’t know your way around archery yet, right?”
“Mmf, wouldn’t say that, Green Bean, anti-heroes are the most wish-washy people I’ve ever encountered,” she tucked a stray hair behind her ear. “Not my favorite.”
“Maybe I wanted you to hear me mocking you oh great and powerful Oracle, ever think of that??” he retorted sardonically. Rolling his eyes he heard the sound of sirens once more and was again on the move. “I didn’t know my way around archery no, I did know my way around my parents credit it card though.”
He laughed and shook his head. “Captain Cold over the Joker any day.”
She scoffed, the end of it turning into a laugh, “Green Beans are an excellent source of vitamin C and you’re obviously being a bit sour about this. And, I have to ask, were you hated as a child? Because that could be two for two.” Barbara raised both her hands off the computer in a small gesture of surrender, as if he could see her. “Your consideration is all I need, and I’m sure 8-year-old Ollie will get over it.”
She watched him from her monitors, shrugging to no one. “The big-time villains are unusually quiet–which is never a good thing, to be honest–but unless you want to scope out every nook and cranny of Gotham, be my guest. Also, the Big Guy is out like every night, not to mention the rest of you that have decided to bless our wonderful city, so I’m sure if anything, they’re quaking in their boots.”
He mimicked her under his breath in a whiny tone. “Green Beans are an excellent source of vitamin C” he said, to himself more than to her, and in that moment he was the most mature super hero out there. “I was not hated as a child, neglected yes, but showered with inconsistent affection and enough money to attempt to fill the void that my parent’s poor skills at raising me left.” He shrugged once more as the bad guy scarpered. “8 year old me is plotting both of our downfalls, just you wait.”
He laughed. “Well good for them, maybe they should convert. I’ve always thought that Captain Cold would make a good good guy.”
Mia, never one to back down from a challenge simply nodded. “I’m holding to you that, Boy Scout.” She warned with a smirk that mimicked his own. Though she would never tell Ollie this to his face (because she’s stubborn and a teenager which means she hates giving the adults in her life any satisfaction), Mia savored these moments with him. She made a point to enjoy the simple moments with him when they were just talking about how much she hated calculus as she watched him cook and it was just them. Being his bow wielding sidekick was awesome and their highlight reel is no doubt the kind of things she won’t forget when she’s (hopefully) old and wrinkly and complaining about something like Medicare but she lives for the little moments where they’re just hanging out – where the they feel like a real family or, at least, what Mia always thought having a real family would feel like. “I’d really love to hear more about these golden days, Ollie.” She told him with a flippant grin that softened at his compliment. “Thanks.” She replied, in a tone that told him she really meant it. “My guidance counselor told me it’d be good for college.” The blonde explained, “I never really thought about colleges before, y’know? I mean, you don’t – you’re rich. What I mean is, all anyone is talking about now is college and I just…. I’ve never really bothered to think about it before. Like, ever.” Mia rambled.
Olive had never been a boy scout. It had never been something he had had time for. Plus he had always been way too much of a childish ‘rebel’ to stoop to that level. Now he regretted it. He would like to have one of those hats they got.
He paused for a moment and observed her, smiling gently and shrugging. “You don’t want to hear about the Golden Days Mia, they were more like the blackout days if I’m perfectly honest, and they weren’t the happiest of times either.” He shrugged. “Then there was the point in my life where I had Conor, Roy and Diana all around, that wasn’t half bad, but now they’re not around and all I’ve got left is you, I think that that is how I really like it.”
He paused and shrugged once more. “You’re welcome, and if you want when we’re both a little less busy we can go and take a look at some colleges, you could even study abroad, maybe look at like Oxford or Cambridge. I mean I went to Yale, but that was definitely the money as a pose to the brains. The truth is that there is very little in my head. Just saw dust really.”
“In that case – your chili? Best chili I’ve ever tasted.” Mia announced, “You ever think about ditching the whole archer shtick and becoming a professional chef who only makes chili? I can see it now.” The blonde girl told him as she trailed behind and hopped up to take a seat at the kitchen island. “Yeah, I do: I can’t decide whether to burn it or just rip it up. Decisions, decisions…” She sighed.
Oliver laughed gently. “I tell you what Mia, if we manage to drop the crime rate to 1% then I’ll hang up the bow and arrow and green hood and I’ll start a chili shop,” he crossed his heart and smirked, “scouts honor.” Smirking he chuckled and continued chopping up ingredients and throwing them in a huge metal pot that was reserved for his chili. “In my golden days I’d have suggested that you use it for target practice, but nowadays I’m more inclined to lean towards you working through it. You’re really getting better at this stuff.”
She hummed to herself, smiling while typing a security code on the screen, “This is true.” Barb has known Oliver for years now, mainly as the Green Arrow but also as Dinah’s…Di’s something. But whatever the predicament is with her friend’s relationship, Ollie and Barbara have always gotten off amicably.
“It’s a viable suggestion; I just want you to consider it, you know, mull it over with time, maybe you’ll grow into it, Ollie.” She took note of the squadron of police heading his way and rerouted their systems to have them take a detour and give the archer more time to leave the scene. Not every vigilante was as welcome in Gotham. Barbara clucked her tongue at his trying to change the subject, but conceded. For now. She pulled up a system police frequencies and feeds of CCTVs and ran an algorithm for anything that may need attention. She had one or two heroes besides the Green Arrow already deployed throughout the city, but this is Gotham City so it’s only a matter of time before–bingo.
“This isn’t as big as taking down a few thugs, but there’s someone on Central and Forth Street breaking into cars with a small EMP. Clever using EMPs to disable the alarms but good for us that the pulse isn’t powerful enough to jam the cameras I have set up. You should head there if you’re up to it.”
Leaping from the top of a building, Ollie allowed the momentum to carry him across the gap and across to the next rooftop, he didn’t stop running and soon he was vaulting another gap between buildings. “Green Beans are for eating Oracle, not for superhero names, besides apart from the colour they have nothing in common with my work and to make things worse I always hated them as a child.”
“I’ll consider it, but I can tell you now that 8 year old Ollie is very disappointed with what I’m doing, just something you should bear in mind, you’re breaking the heart of a now non existent eight year old.” Reaching into his quiver he pulled out a trick arrow of his own design, a simple grapnel arrow but it still looked pretty cool. At least he thought so. Firing he watched it hit its target perfectly and latch onto the corner of a building, zipping down it quickly he landed on the floor and kept going. He was incredibly fit and could run like this for a while. He could’ve climbed down the building, but where was the fun in that right?
“I’m disappointed to be honest, I was hoping for something more worthy.” He smiled to himself as he turned the corner and saw a youth fiddling with a SUV, “hey kid!” he shouted pulling an arrow out and firing it perfectly so it knocked his tools out of his hand, he could see the EMP lying near by, “people pay a lot of money for those cars, don’t scuff the paint work, that is rude.”
Mia opened her mouth to give the inevitable sassy retort but opted to wrinkle her nose in disgust at the mention of hard drives. “Fine, you win this round but only ‘cause you basically dropped the A-bomb when you brought up the deep scrubbing which, for the record, I think qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.” The blonde girl pointed out. “New low, Ollie, seriously.” She said with the disappointed shake of her head. “And speaking of homework, did pre-calc look like hieroglyphics back in your day?”
Ollie smirked at Mia and stalked back to the kitchen that they shared, “Well I’ll attempt to make up for my cruel and unusual punishment with something good to eat, it is still chili night... unless you actually think that chili is a cruel and unusual punishment,” he shrugged, “but then you’d have to leave my house.” He smiled lightly, he wasn’t about to admit that he hadn’t bothered with school that much, she didn’t need that sort of role model, “sadly it did, y’need some help with it?”
“Hey, in my defense, I finished my homework!” Mia protested, “Y’know, for the most part….” she continued in a mutter. “You ever thought about fighting criminals with your chilli? I’m starting to think that’d scare them more than a bow and arrow.” Mia thought aloud before chuckling, “What, are you gonna ground me? ‘Cause we both know how that goes: you ground me, I give you the silent treatment and you just miss our banter waayy too much to go through with it. Face it, Ollie – you’re a softie.”
Shocked and appalled he shook his head. “You’d better have finished your homework, and my chili is for eating, not for firing at people who break the law.” Oliver chuckled gently, she knew him too well. “Well Miss Dearden as grounding you clearly doesn’t work I think I’ll have to devise a suitably boring punishment, perhaps I’ll see if Oracle has any hard drives that she needs deep scrubbing, that should keep you busy for the next few years and then there would be no need to worry about all the bad guys. See if you still think I’m a softie then,” he replied smirking.
“Ollie, as… Delicious and totally non life threatening as that sounds, chili can wait, bad guys can’t.” Mia pointed out with a smirk.
“Terrible excuses, crime fighting on a school night for a starters and you think that beating up criminals is more important than my chili. Have I taught you nothing, you and I are going to have to have a very long talk about this.”
Be All My Sins Remembered || Dinah and Oliver
Dinah readily accepted the drink that he offered her. In her mind, he was using a little social lubrication to make their imminent conversation just a little bit easier. A spoonful of sugar and all that. She took a big sip, savoring the husky flavor in her mouth before enjoying it’s warmth all the way down. Before she take another though, Oliver was ushering her like a madman into the bathroom for a shower. He didn’t give her the option of objecting- babbling awkwardly. Clearly nervous and overcompensating. It was actually pretty cute.
For a moment Dinah forgot all of their history and just enjoyed the moment. Being in his presence. Admiring his chivalry. She knew that if they met today for the first time, she would be in love with him all over again.
Before she knew it she was alone again, grateful for a moment alone in the shower while she collected her thoughts. It was all she could do not to stay in there all night, but the last thing she wanted was for Ollie to come looking for her. Dinah wrapped herself in the clean, plush towel nearby and stepped out of the shower. She knew exactly where his pajama drawer was, figuring those would be the least awkward items of clothing she could put on.
Oh but how awkward she looked anyway, shuffling out into the kitchen in very VERY oversized plaid green pajamas. Dinah offered a shrug and a half smile, trying not to laugh at herself for how silly she must look to him right now, tiny as a child in adult clothing. “So….am I nailing this look or…what?”
It took every ounce of self control that Oliver had not to take two roads that he knew would make this situation a thousand times worse, a thousand times more awkward than the quagmire that they were already in. He knew that he had three options. The first options was of course always going to be the hardest option, and as he paced the pent house that he lived in sipping his scotch he knew that it was the only option he would be able to take but that didn’t stop him from wanting to do the other things. The things he knew would make it a thousand times worse.
The first option was to slip into the large, plush and luxurious bathroom with her. All it would take was as simple twist of the golden handle and he would be in there, he could slip out of the little that he was wearing and slide into the shower besides her. He could take her in his muscular arms and hold her, he’d cover her in kisses and they’d avoid the conversation with a collision of his body on hers, then they’d sleep and he’d have some solace from what was to come next.
Or he could change, quickly into his green suit, flick his hood up, slide his quiver onto his back and take up the longbow that he loved and valued so much. Something would have come up, that is what the note would at least read, he would explain it all away and the only person who would be any the wiser would be him.
Somehow he was too strong for either of those paths. Somehow he stayed in his seat, finished his scotch and sat there.
The seconds ticked by. He could hear the clock on the wall, he could see the hand crawl away and he counted the minutes, five minutes, then ten, soon it was fifteen and it had gotten to exactly twenty three minutes and fifty seven seconds when Dinah returned from the bathroom dressed in his pajamas.
He smiled at her, brushing the long blonde hair out of his eyes and laughing gently. “You look beautiful...” he admitted to himself and to her, though he wondered if she could even hear his words, they were barely a whisper. Yet somehow he knew that even if she hadn’t heard him she would understand. He couldn’t help but love her, even if it tore him apart to do so.
“Do you want another drink? Or I could get you something to eat, we’ve got some pizza in the fridge I think and ...” he trailed off once more and looked at her and shrugged. Somehow he had stood from his seat in the lounge and paced to behind where he had been sat, was he really that desperate to put distance between the two of them?
“I swear, Gotham is every wannabe superhero’s wet dream. I’m actually I lost count of the amount of petty thefts I stopped just on my way home.”
“Fantastic excuse Mia, doesn’t excuse the fact that you’re late for chili night. I’m honestly a little disappointed. Not angry. Just disappointed.”
Be All My Sins Remembered || Dinah and Oliver
“You gonna invite me in or leave a girl shivering out here all night?” Dinah forced a half smile across her mouth as she shoved past him, not giving him the option of telling her “no.” God how she hoped he wasn’t going to say no to her and turn her away. She figured the best way to keep it from being an option at all was to change the subject. “God save the Queen.” She forced from between chattering teeth, referencing the punk rock band that still blared from his surround sound. There was a sparkle in her eyes at the double meaning there.
As long as that music played she wouldn’t have to start explaining herself. She knew Oliver would want answers, and he deserved them….but that wouldn’t make it any easier explaining them. There was no excuse for her behavior, she knew that. How could someone forgive the things she had done? What she had put him through. Of course, Oliver had caused Dinah his share of grief…but she wasn’t keeping score. That wasn’t what partners did.
Dinah wrapped her arms around each other in half an effort to keep herself warm. The other half, to keep herself from falling apart completely. A small comfort in the presence of her once and always beloved. She did her best to avert her gaze, but she felt his eyes burning into her regardless. These were the last few relished moments before she would have to begin her story….the calm before the storm.
Oliver slipped out of her way and allowed her into his pent house. He could have always said no, if he really wanted he could’ve demanded that she left his premises. She would’ve done it, at least he liked to think that she would’ve left without a fuss. If she had made a fuss there was little that he would be able to do, he knew that in a one on one fight he was no match for her, plus she had that sonic scream thing on her side and he had a couple of fart arrows, classy right?
“Oh shit sorry yeah come on in,” he said making his way back away from the lounge and grabbing a remote off of the table nearest to him, clicking a button he ceased the music so that they could really talk, it had been so long since they had actually spoken, or even seen each other that he couldnt’ actually believe that she was here. He wanted to talk to her about what had happened, he wanted to confront her about leaving. He wanted to demand an answer but he couldn’t, he didn’t want to make it that time that they had to actually discuss what they were eventually going to have to talk through.
So he avoided it, it was something that he was good at, avoiding awkward problems such as that one. His solution was to make his way over to the table full of drinks and pour himself another one, “You want one of these?” he asked gesturing to the table, without waiting for her answer he filled her a tumbler, slipped a couple of cubes of ice in there and handed it over.
It took him less than a second to notice her shivering, “You must be freezing in those wet clothes,” he sighed and reached behind him to grab a blanket, walking over to her he draped it around her shoulders gently, “come on, we’ll stick you in the shower, then we can dry your clothes and you can borrow some of mine until they’re ready,” he didn’t know why he was being so nice to her, maybe it was a coping mechanism, maybe he was just not ready for the conversation yet, Oliver had always known he was a coward when it came to Dinah, but this was entirely different.
Leading her from the living room and into the large bathroom that was off of his bedroom he looked back and saw her wet foot prints tracking the way. He ignored them, focusing on getting her dry and warm once more, maybe if he could save her from pneumonia then he could actually confront her. “Why don’t you get changed and have a shower?” he said once more, “wait I’ve already said that, y’know just do whatever, I’ll wait for you to finish,” he said as he turned and paused in the door way of the bathroom, waiting for her reply.
Be All My Sins Remembered || Dinah and Oliver
Dinah had studied martial arts since she was an adolescent. She had suffered the death of her parents, weathered her kidnapping and felt the cold hard sting of giving up a child. Dinah Laurel Lance was no stranger to pain, hardship or strain. She had been through more in her 30 years than most in their hundreds…
Clearly, this was a woman who could hold her own against life’s woes..
and yet here she was, scared as a child in the dark as she approached her ex’s penthouse. Oliver Queen was a forgiving man, this she knew. It was one of the many reasons she had handed over her heart to him with reckless abandon, but this was a horse of an entirely different color. In short, she had skipped out on him.
At least, she knew this is how he must see it. Things had gotten rocky between the two of them. They were fighting each other more often than they were fighting against others. Their teamwork, their unity had been severed with a giant wedge between them. Ever since her kidnapping and the torture that accompanied the event things within Dinah had not been the same. Staying with Ollie had only hindered her recovery, and she saw no other option but to sneak out while he slept. It had now been months since she had seen him, since a trace of her existence had crossed his path. It was a long walk, but Dinah was certain the fresh, crisp air would be a baptism. A cleansing before the imminent facing of her fears.
It was a couple of blocks before the sky opened up and the rain poured down like a punishment from the gods themselves. Dinah began to walk faster, and then run towards Oliver’s residence. When he would finally open his door after what seemed like ages of waiting, he would find a soaking Dinah Lance waiting for him on the other side. Sad blue eyes would greet him beneath a tousled, blonde mane now sticking to her face and neck. Droplets of water had began to form a pool at her feet as the regretful woman waited to meet her fate.
One of the many perks about being a ‘playboy’ billionaire was that no one questionned you when you didn’t emerge from your room or your home until the middle of the afternoon the next day. Though Ollie questioned whether or not he still qualified as a playboy, he hadn’t been with anyone since Dinah and he couldn’t imagine actually being with anyone. Sure he flirted as if he would be with anyone that had two legs, but the idea of actually doing that with someone? Not right now. He wasn’t ready for that anytime soon.
It was twelve at night, and he had come back early from patrol as Green Arrow, there had been too much heat on him that night and he hadn’t relished the idea of being in a GCPD holding cell. Sure his lawyer would have him out in a few hours but that didn’t change the heat that would come off of it. So today he was playing it safe, Mia was out, God knew where but he knew that she was safe.
So he found himself walking around the house, a glass of scotch in one hand and the Sex Pistols playing over the speakers that were located around his house.
It was ironic really. Oliver Queen listening to a punk rock band that was all surrounded about Anarchy and tearing down the Capitalist system. The irony didn’t pass him by and he often found himself smiling gently as the guitar and rough words washed over him.
As he strode around his house, over and over again, he found his mind wrap itself in the concept that was Dinah Lance. She had disappeared, he didn’t want to admit that he knew the number of days ago that it was. He added one day to the count every time a new day ticked by. Half dressed all he wore were simple loss fitting grey trousers. Looking out the window he saw rain droplets slam against the glass over and over again as the heavens opened in a monsoon like downpour.
As he heard the doorbell ring he stepped to the door and pulled it open, who it could be at this time of night he was not sure, he secretly hoped it was a lost pizza boy, he was getting kind of hungry and he was barely paying attention, more focused on draining the last of his scotch from his glass. When he finally looked away from his glass and at the person at the door he felt his heart plummet and his stomach leap all at the same time.
“Dinah...” he said incredulously, he could hardly believe that she was actually outside of his front door, “What are you doing here?” was all he could manage to say as his brain tried to process the fact that she was actually here, sure she was completely soaked, but she was here.
“I see what you’re tryin’ to do, Tinkerbell - an’, honestly, I’m up for it.” It was healthy practice to attempt a seemingly impossible, daring challenge everyday - ironically enough, it was what kept Floyd alive. Spontaneity should have been his middle name - not George. Eurgh. “If you were one of the Bats, I could get that - but, c'mon, man - it’s not like you don’t kill people; or, actually give a shit.”
Oliver looked at him and felt a sour taste enter his mouth, he hadn’t killed for a long time, and he only did so when it was absolutely necessary. The idea that made him different from other superheroes was abhorrent.
“Whatever Deadshot, you’re dead wrong, I don’t kill people for the money, I do what I have to ... to do the right thing I guess, and if I didn’t give a shit then i’d be doing what you do.”
“And don’t you forget it,” she said, enunciating each word for emphasis. Babs checked up on a few other heroes’ vitals before going back to her main monitor and honing into Green Arrow’s location to hack into the security cameras to watch him. She liked putting a face–or a body and background scenery–to a voice when she talked to people. It made her nighttime job seem less like customer service. “Rolls off the tongue better than Green Arrow, if you ask me. Maybe you should consider a name change, green beans are a lot more menacing.”
Oliver rolled his eyes, you never knew when Oracle was watching and he was sure that she would see him do it, but he didn’t care. Bad jokes were his thing and he wasn’t about to let someone else steal his limelight. Not that there was anything that he would or could do to stop her. “It isn’t like you’re going to let me forget it,” he replied into the microphone that he had attached to the headpiece that he wore underneath his hood.
“I prefer Green Arrow, not going to lie to you Oracle.” He took off away from the crime scene, the GCPD were definitely on his way, he could already hear the sirens and he didn’t want to get caught in another pursuit. Vaulting over a wall he headed across Gotham. “Now before you get too invested in changing my name maybe you could tell me if there is anything that I should be checking out in this city?”
“I’d be dead. I wouldn’t notice anything.”
He gives a chuckle. “I suppose it would.” He pulls the tissue away, passing a quick hand under his nose. “I think the bleeding’s stopped.” He prods at the bone, feeling it shift under the skin. “Hospital,” he groans to himself.
“I was trying to attempt to avoid that more ... morbid detail.” Oliver spoke quietly, there was no need to raise his voice.
Oliver frowned gently. The boy had broken his nose. Sighing he shook his head at himself and spoke once more. “I’ll give you a ride to Gotham general, if that is broken you shouldn’t be driving.”
