‘Portrait of Ursula K. Le Guin’, ink on paper, 27 x 33.5cm.
Here’s my portrait of the late epic author Ursula K. Le Guin for the 2024 LOCALS group show at Outré Gallery. I admire Ursula a lot and started reading her books during the lockdown years, enjoying slowly learning more about her and working through her epic collection of work. There are many of her writings and quotes that feel so relevant to this time we’re in right now —
From ‘The Dispossessed’:
“You cannot buy the Revolution. You cannot make the Revolution. You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere.”
And a favourite from ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’:
“Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.”
